2008 Bowman Chrome 172 X fractor /250 Dustin “The Lazah Show” Pedroia! One of those guys whose prospect and rookie cards got caught up in licensing deals. He first showed up in Upper Deck Stars and Stripes, and his professional prospect cards are in everything but Bowman. His first flagship Topps card is a short printed insert into the 2005 Red Sox complete team sets and his first flagship card with a RC badge is in 2006 Topps ‘52 with that 1952 design. So lots of choices when it comes to one of the most fun middle infielders in a long time. This is just a cool card from early in his career. I’m always left with a feeling of missing out opening boxes are definitely not like it used to be..bring back the 24/36 pack heck even 18 packs would be great give us some sense of satisfaction opening packs. I’m so old school I guess but man do I miss the old days of enjoying opening a box even when I didn’t hit a thing atleast it wasn’t over in 2 minutes. Four of my favorite Refractor cards in my collection hail from the 1996-97 season. This period marks not only Shaq's Lakers debut but also the transition from the Junk Wax Era to the Golden Age of Cardboard. While this season witnessed significant innovations, with Serial Numbering being the standout, Refractors remained a hallmark carried over from the Junk Wax Era. Topps even amplified their presence, not only by releasing two additional chromium brands—Bowman’s Best and Topps Chrome—with Refractor parallels but also by integrating several chromium insert sets into the regular Topps brand, also featuring Refractor parallels. Moreover, Topps introduced another iteration of Refractors, first in the 1996 Topps Stars and later across all Bowman’s Best products. Notably, Atomic Refractors, characterized by a distinctive hyper-plaid pattern, stood out as even more scarce compared to their standard counterparts. The image above showcases various Refractor innovations introduced during that season. To me, the Best Cuts (upper left) stand out as the most beautiful among Atomic Refractors. The colors and shape harmonize flawlessly with the atomic pattern. The 1996-97 season also marked the debut of the very first Finest Gold Refractors (upper right), which also featured the hyper-plaid pattern of Atomic Refractors. Refractor parallels were initially introduced in 93-94, thus none were available during Shaq’s rookie season. Fortunately, Topps released a set in 96-97, featuring reprints of the 50 greatest NBA players as they appeared on their first Topps, Star Co., or Bowman cards. Twenty-five of these players were issued with Finest technology and also featured a rarer Refractor parallel, as seen in the lower left. The final card depicted is the inaugural Topps Chrome Refractor. Upon reading my Pack Odds 101 piece on Medium, Tyler from @ultimate_card_guides offered a valuable insight, highlighting the prevalent misconception that pack odds directly reflect the scarcity of a specific card. While pack odds can serve as a rough indicator, devoid of further context, they can mislead as several other factors contribute to a card's rarity when compared to others. One pivotal variable is the total volume of the product, denoting the number of packs manufactured. Naturally, a lower production volume results in a scarcer print run based on a given pack odd. However, even within a single product line, there's another crucial factor to consider. To exemplify, let's delve into one of my cherished sets, originating from the 96-97 Bowman’s Best series. On the left stands a 96-97 Best Cuts Atomic Refractor, with a pack insertion rate of 1 in 194. Conversely, its counterpart on the right, the 96-97 Honor Roll Atomic Refractor, presents a doubled challenge with a rate of 1 in 384 packs, suggesting it might be twice as rare as the Best Cuts counterpart. While it's indeed twice as difficult to obtain an Honor Roll compared to a Best Cuts, both cards are equally rare due to the Best Cuts set featuring twice as many players. Therefore, the apparent discrepancy in accessibility between the two sets stems from the differing player checklists, not the respective print runs which are indeed equal. But every year we start out in first place and then the games start 😂 I’ll never understand why ownership never embraced winning on the field instead of winning in revenue sharing..ok there I go ranting I’m done sorry. A good news and bad news find.....dismantled late Victorian astronomical telescope by T Cooke & Sons of York, England, one of the leading scientific instrument makers of the day. Alas, not enough room at for it (built an extra garage on the only possible observatory site at home!) so its still looking for a new owner to give it the TLC it deserves. So after my last reel posts of my last goodwill pallet purchase I just wanted to show you where it all started it wasn’t all glorious some care were damaged and I had to clean it all up and sort and penny sleeve my goodies. But what this pallet brought me was a lot of my childhood joy which is why I buy these anytime I see them offered on shopgoodwill.com. If none are currently offered it’s worth the weekly check because you never know just like the pallets you never know what your getting sometimes is ok sometimes it’s great but for me it’s always great. This is what brings me back to being that kid again not buying a $500 box of cards that I get 3 minutes of disappointment..I need value for my entertainment and these pallets do the trick for me and if your into cards for the cards then this is for you.
