1987 Cadillac Eldorado These eleventh-generation Eldorados were introduced for 1986 and sold through 1991. These downsized cars are the smallest Eldorados, as the next and final generation grew in size. Previous Eldorados had been front-wheel drive, but this generation was the first to have the engine, a 130 hp 4.1L V8 in this car, mounted transversally. 139,000 units of this generation were made. 1987 Plymouth Reliant K LE The Reliant K and the nearly identical Dodge Aries K were introduced for 1981, replacing the Plymouth Volare and Dodge Aspen. These were the first models of the front-wheel drive k-car range which are credited with saving Chrysler from bankruptcy. This facelifted version was introduced for 1985 and sold through 1989. Most of these were sedans but a wagon and coupe were also offered. 2.1 million of the Reliant and Aries were made, but few survive today. This car is in excellent condition aside from missing its driver door window trim, badges, and a wheel cover, I don’t believe this paint color is original though. 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d’Elegance This generation of the Fleetwood Brougham was introduced for 1977 and sold through 1992, although the “Fleetwood” part of the name was dropped in 1987. These cars were significantly downsized over the previous generation, loosing about a foot of length and about 900 lbs, partly because the Fleetwood no longer had its exclusive longer wheelbase compared to lower end Cadillacs. This is essentially a DeVille with more standard and optional features, but this bodystyle would become exclusive to the Fleetwood Brougham in 1985. Like DeVilles, Fleetwoods in 1979 had engine options of a 180 hp carbureted 425 cu. in. (7.0L) V8, the same engine with multi-port fuel injection and 15 extra horsepower, or a 125 hp 350 cu. in.(5.7L) diesel V8. There were minor styling changes between the first 3 model years; 1980 had more significant restyling. About 107,000 units of these ‘77-‘79 Fleetwood Broughams were made, all sedans, compared to 656,000 DeVilles, which consisted of 58% coupes and 42% sedans. 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE Coupe This sixth-generation Grand Prix was introduced for 1988 and sold through 1996. It was the first Grand Prix to use front-wheel drive. A sedan variant was also available for the first time for 1990. The smaller headlights seen on this car were added to coupes for 1991, and the grille and dashboard were changed for 1994. This car has the base 160 hp 3.1L V6 paired with a 4-speed automatic, a 210 hp 3.4L V6 was also available in 1995. Manual transmissions were no longer available after 1993. Records indicate this car has been registered in Reno, NV its entire life, only changing hands once after being totaled and rebuilt in 2011. One million sixth-gen Grand Prixs were made, but this is one of only three I’ve seen in the wild in the last year, and only coupe. Datsun 620 The 620 was introduced for 1973 and sold through 1979, I believe this is a 1978 or 1979 model. This is the fourth generation of Datsun trucks sold in the U.S. since Datsun entered the U.S. market in 1958, I’ve seen two of these recently but not any of its predecessors. This generation was the first to have an automatic transmission and extended cab option option. This one appears to have been modified in the ‘90s if I had to guess, with its non-factory seats, wheels, and sideview mirrors. I found it less than 500 feet away from the Courier on the same street in Reno, NV. Ford Courier The Courier was introduced for 1972, it’s a rebadged Mazda B-Series but has a unique grille. Eagle Talon The Talon, along with the nearly identical Mitsubishi Eclipse and Plymouth Laser, was created in the Diamond Star Motors joint venture between Chrysler and Mitsubishi. 1997 Ford Windstar The first-generation Windstar was sold from 1995 to 1998. This is a final year pre-facelift model, because for some reason the Windstar got a one-year facelift before the 1999 redesign. As I explained in my Mercury Villager post a few days ago, Ford partnered with Nissan to develop the Maxima-based Villager and Quest, which preceded this Taurus-based Windstar that Ford decided to sell alongside the Villager, while the Aerostar was still in production too. Windstars sold well reaching over 200k units per year, but Ford was never able to catch up to Chrysler and abandoned the minivan segment after 2007. Despite those sales, these have become uncommon in my area, even more so than the Previa which averaged about 25,000 units per year in its 7 year run.
