On 5/18, “Team Palestine” lined up across two solidarity zones along the Brooklyn Half Marathon route. Community members and families cheered on runners and encouraged them to high five for a liberated Palestine. The morale boost and outpouring of love for Palestine was palpable, though our main goal is clear - the beloved people killed in Gaza are not just a number. Together, @bkfamiliesforpalestine and @ny09neighbors visualized: 🎈42,000 martyrs in Gaza. There were around 30,000 runners present; that means that for every 2 runners, 3 people in Gaza have been murdered by Israel. 🎈1.7 million Gazans displaced and forced to walk north to south over the course of 25 miles, with all their belongings, even as some were ill or injured, pregnant or had recently given birth. That’s twice as far as Saturday’s run. 🎈610,000 children sheltering from heavy bombing in Rafah. That’s over 20 times the number of runners at the half marathon. Together, we continue to imagine a world where there is a permanent ceasefire, an end to the occupation in Palestine, an end to apartheid, an end to the siege, and the right to return. Justice required endurance and we will keep going until there is A Free Palestine, A Free Global South, and A Liberated Planet. Hands down the most life affirming thing I’ve ever been a part of, standing in community with wondrous mamas for the wondrous people of Palestine. . Seeing runners cross over to high five us. Watching their bodies speed up and faces brighten at the sight of us. Runners leapt, danced and hugged us for showing up to cheer Palestine and them on. . In a whole morning, only two detractors in a sea of hundreds of smiling faces and supporters. Love wins. Palestine will be free. . The best a run has felt since the marathon. My runs this week have felt raw and chaotic. Usually running is somewhat a release for me - it allows me to clear my mind, let go of unpleasant emotion - but this week it hasn't worked. I spent most of my runs on Tuesday and Wednesday sporadically sobbing. Today something clicked, and for an hour and a half, my mind was empty. Something I really, really needed. I'm still going to be posting lots about the situation in Gaza in my stories and saving to highlights, so please do keep reading them. I'm trying not to share anything graphic - I actually had a nightmare last night after some of the things I've seen - but I am trying to post info about what's going on and what you can do to help. It was a gusty affair this morning doing bridge flagging with the #RunnersForPalestine team in early morning peak traffic. We had to hold on tight at some points to not be blown onto the N2 below 😂 But very refreshing to get so much support from the motorists passing below the bridge, in both directions. The cause is alive ✊🏼.
