Marlene Smith born 1964 Born England, works UK Good Housekeeping III 1985, remade 2023 Chip board, household plaster, wire mesh, jay cloths, gouache, framed photograph and hand-painted text The exhibition notes explain “This work is a portrait of Dorothy ‘Cherry’ Groce. The text reads ‘it is 7am and I am not bullet proof. Groce was shot by police during a raid of her home in Brixton, London in 1985. The shooting led to a series of uprisings in the area and paralysed Groce, ultimately leading to her death in 2011. In 2014, following an inquest, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner apologised for the time it had taken to say ‘sorry’ for her death. A permanent memorial to Groce now stands in Windrush Square, Brixton.” 2. An original leaflet advertising a march about the death of Cherry Groce. 3-5. Arriving at the Syracuse University encampment, I braced myself for the cacophony of voices and the energy of protest that often accompanies such gatherings. Yet, as I made my way closer to the sea of tents, I was met with an unexpected silence. It was a stark contrast to what I had anticipated—a moment of quiet amidst the storm of activism. Initially, the silence left me unsettled, questioning if I had taken a wrong turn. But as I turned the corner and beheld the community that the students had created, I was struck by its profound beauty and strength. Despite the absence of noise, there was a palpable sense of solidarity and purpose that hung in the air. As I wandered through the encampment, engaging in conversations with students, faculty, and community members, I began to understand the power of this silence. It wasn’t a silence of complacency or apathy, but rather a deliberate choice to create a space for reflection, dialogue, and connection. In the absence of cheers or chanting, I found people immersed in various activities—working on school assignments, pursuing their careers, engaging in activism, creating art, having meaningful conversations, and sharing food. Each action was a testament to the multifaceted nature of activism and community building. As I stood before the protest sign, its length stretching out before me adorned with the names of deceased Palestinians, I felt the weight of their stories, their lives, their struggles. It was a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for justice and human rights. Leaving the encampment, I carried with me a renewed sense of hope and inspiration. The silence may have been unexpected, but it spoke volumes about the strength and unity of those who had gathered. Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine said that the police officers are “wearing riot gear” and that “multiple blocks have been barricaded off”. Columbia University issued a shelter-in-place order as dozens of police officers moved in to remove and arrest students. Several dozen police officers with body armor and riot shields broke through the windows of Hamilton Hall to remove the protesting students inside. The hall had been renamed Hind Hall in memory of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old girl killed by Israel in Gaza. Some officers entered with their guns drawn, according to the Washington Post. According to WKCR student radio, there’s a student unconscious on the ground in front of Hamilton Hall. WKCR reports Columbia President’s email announces NYPD will remain on campus until May 17 after graduation. Students have been protesting peacefully against their University’s complicity in genocide. Never in my life did I think as a disability activist that I’d be advocating for the basic right to attend my classes. So many fought and obtained this right before me. The continuous, unauthorized pro Palestinian protests have ensured that accessibility at Columbia Univeristy is gone. My sister and I wrote this piece, sharing our experience on campus from Oct 12th until now. We had one goal in mind … to ensure that the voices of those with disabilities are heard. Amongst all this antisemitism and madness unfolding on campus, my safety as not only a Jewish woman but as a woman with a disability has been jeopardized and ignored … in 2024, I am unable make it to my classes.
