The following commentary is from David Yarrow regarding this shot: “Most tight portraits of lions, including mine, disappoint either because the camera is above the lion’s eye, or the distance between camera and subject is further than one would like or perhaps the lighting conditions compromise the textural detail. In most cases, it is all three of these issues and this is no surprise as lions do not live in studios and are also extremely dangerous. The opportunity to take this portrait of the most handsome lion in Kevin Richardson’s sanctuary in South Africa came about because of the cave that we had built for our Daniel project. There was just one source of light from the opening behind my cage and by the time the light reached Yame’s face it was even and kind. This allowed me to glorify the detail in a lion’s face in a way that I have never previously been able to do. My preference is for his look to be head on and symmetrical. I knew that even the most marginal of compositional imbalances would have a visual impact and the key was to be patient and retain concentration at all times. If I put the camera down, or had a breather, there would be every chance I would lose the moment of a true 180 degree face off. The most important critic in these shots is always Kevin - after all, he knows the personality of every lion in his care and either I have captured it, or I haven’t. OUTLAWS | by David Yarrow “This photograph has a palpable sense of place, and the heavy overnight snowfall lends a mood to the story. We know this train track and the dramatic cutting well, and film scholars will also be familiar with the location from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. My idea was to have a wide enough frame to include outlaws on the slopes which grandly saddle the train track below. However, this was no easy ride for the cowboys as the heavy snow also covers big boulders and rocks that are impossible to detect until it is too late. There in lay the riddle of this photograph, in that the more virginal the snow, the stronger the likely visual, but also the harder the execution. It always tends to be that way, and we would prefer tough execution and good conditions than the other way around. The Iron horse played an integral role in the mythological lore of the Wild West, and in this instance, I wanted my camera to dive into the pages of a Western storybook. This was an untamed and loosely governed wilderness occupied by tough men with merciless traits. That was my story - the beauty of frontier landscapes was often coupled with trouble and danger. I would like to thank all those who helped that cold morning in Colorado, especially Al Harper and his team in Durango. Without the full partnership of the train company, this idea would have been fanciful at best. As it was, everyone did their job, and we left town with a special” - David Yarrow. I had a collection of tiny diamonds on hand, and my model already had the glitter in her mouth. She slightly protruded her tongue, allowing us to gently place the diamonds. As I prepared to capture the shot, she closed her mouth. Unexpectedly, she began choking briefly before regaining her breath, leading us both to burst into laughter. At that moment, the concept shifted from a diamond-filled mouth to a glitter-filled one, as she accidentally swallowed all the diamonds. Explore the narrative behind the artwork, as shared by @davidyarrow — “In the 1950s, the Californian Dream elevated Route 66 to global fame, dubbed “The Mother Road” by John Steinbeck. It became the American Middle Class's escape route, fueled by California's rapid economy and Disneyland's 1955 opening. Near Amboy, in the Californian desert, Route 66 embodies its classic journey, drawing filmmakers and road trippers. Despite its remoteness, Roy’s Motel and Cafe serve as a landmark. Amboy's familiarity posed a challenge, having been extensively photographed. I sought a fresh perspective. With the help of a Hong Kong friend and his rare 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Vignale Spider, our shoot promised innovation. Its design allowed for captivating shots of Daniela Braga and a wolf, symbolizing Route 66's essence of freedom and ambition. Styled in the mid-1950s, Daniela radiated positivity, echoing Nat King Cole's “Getting her Kicks on Route 66”." (In color) Explore the narrative behind the artwork, as shared by @davidyarrow— “We have worked with some expensive props over the years and as our creative visions become more expansive and ambitious, there will no doubt be some surreal days ahead in the field. However, it may be a long time before we can beat the thrill of taking a 1953 Testarossa to the most iconic stretch of the American Highway system - Forest Gump Point in Monument Valley. There are so many people to thank for making the image I had in my head come to reality. Firstly we must thank the Navajo Nation and their elder Don Mose - who looked after us so well and entertained the crew to dinner. We were honoured to be their guests. Brooks Nader is a great friend of the crew and always performs, irrespective of the cold or the long hours on the road. We like good energy and Brooks offers it at a level that is almost indecent. Most of all, however, I would like to thank Joe Lacob for lending me his $60m car as a prop. Joe came down from San Francisco for the shoot with his wife Nicole and they had a blast. To be fair, it was difficult not to. Introducing ‘Texas Holdem’ by David Yarrow. Read more on @davidyarrow’s take on capturing this amazing shot, “The honour of being invited to photograph Dallas Cowboy legends Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman was coupled with a concern as to exactly what narrative to lean on. Photographing two people is always more challenging than one, as there is every chance that the composition looks stiff and ceremonial. This was not a society magazine’s - “grab an image of the most famous quarterbacks in the franchise together” assignment - it was an opportunity to be creative and tell a broader story. Roger and Troy agreed to meet me in a long-established steak house in the historic west end of downtown Dallas called The Yo Ranch Steakhouse. The joint has been in operation for 26 years and offered decor that played to Texas lore. When we scouted earlier in the week, there was one section of the restaurant that was sufficiently deep enough to give me the space to build up a background context. Dallas is a party town - as a Brit coming to America on a regular basis, there is no more welcoming city in America, and there seems to be no city more at peace with what it is. It is a place to work hard and play hard. I knew my background would be out of my focal range, but that helped as It was about the vibe, not the specific individuals - anonymity was important. My instincts were for a busy bar - with a very clear nod to where we were. I want to thank many locals for coming along - including seemingly the whole of the Staubach family. They all added flesh to the bone. I had deliberated over a reason why the quarterbacks would be sitting directly across the table and both be exactly the same distance from my lens. We decided on a card game as it legitimises their studied behaviour, and a Texas Holdem format added locational bite. This is a picture made in Dallas and for Dallas. I have access through my relationship with The Lion Whisperer - Kevin Richardson. I was in a heavy metal cage to take this image and lying on a bed of mud. My camera was already filthy and in the seconds after this photograph was taken, it was covered in splash water. This all happened before 6.30 am and I was home and in a hot shower before breakfast. It is all about going the extra mile and doing all one can to be below the eyes of the cat and be in place before the sun gets too high. The rest is down to luck and a small bit of experience working in sports photography. The Girl With The Feathered Hat | by David Yarrow Explore the narrative behind the artwork, as shared by @davidyarrow— “When this 1958 Testarossa arrived on set on the Arizona/Utah border, I was struck by its curvaceous beauty. Our initial leaning was to shoot head on and we did exactly that, but when I saw the car in profile, its length and ground-hugging architecture were visually arresting. I knew that I had to play on this and where better to do this than in Monument Valley - John Ford’s favourite playground? He kept returning here as he knew he had found a topographic stage without equal. In his own words “it afforded him an extra character for free”. John Ford was a stickler for horizons and camera angles. Anyone who watched the Fabelmans, specifically the last scene, will know what I am getting at. I am a lucky man. To be filming with this car, in this most grand of settings, with the female powerhouse that is Brooks Nader, is like getting the first, second, and third at the Kentucky Derby. When I set the shot up, I wanted to glorify the length of the car and the vista behind stirred the alchemy that gave us this celebration of life on earth. It is a beautiful world. Testarossa, David Yarrow, 2023 @davidyarrow shares his narrative on behind the scenes of this artwork… “Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with some expensive props. As our creative visions continue to expand and become more ambitious, undoubtedly, there will be surreal days ahead in the field. Yet, it might be quite a while before we experience anything as thrilling as taking a 1953 Testarossa to the most iconic stretch of the American Highway system—Forest Gump Point in Monument Valley. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support and collaboration of several individuals whom we owe immense gratitude. First and foremost, our heartfelt thanks go to the Navajo Nation and their esteemed elder, Don Mose. Their hospitality was exceptional, and they graciously entertained the crew with a delightful dinner. It was truly an honor to be their guests. A vital member of our crew, Brooks Nader, is not only a dear friend but also a consistent performer. Regardless of the cold or the long hours on the road, Brooks brings an incredible energy that is simply infectious. Above all, my deepest gratitude goes to Joe Lacob for lending me his $60 million car as a prop. Joe and his wife Nicole joined us for the shoot, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Bowie (2018) | by Spencer Hansen. “Bowie”, named after David Bowie for his gorgeous hair, is another creature from Hansen’s imagination. Tiga Mata is a clan of 3-eyed, pentadactyl bipeds. The defining features of this family are their face and hands, which were developed in a laborious multi-step process. Hansen initially sculpted the hands and face in clay, then formed a moulage mold around the ceramic pieces. Subsequently, a casting was made using jeweler’s wax, a high-density wax allowing for extensive detailing. He continued refining the hands by carving the wax. The personality of the inspiration shines through, inviting viewers to dance, sing, and imagine. ‘THE GOLDEN AGE OF OIL’ Marathon, Texas – 2023. by David Yarrow. 75 x 71 in. “This photograph, taken against the setting sun in West Texas, has such a broad range of colors that we decided it was best to print it that way. I am a believer in the reductive virtues of monochrome, but to calm down the orange glow in this image would be seen as an artistic error. There is a great deal going on in this vignette, and we are proud of its creation. The four hoofs emphatically off the ground, the dust created by the hoofs, the backlit gusher, and the oil worker all coalesce with a fortunate ease. With so much going on, there was always the possibility of a tension point somewhere, but we got away with it. I think there is also a palpable sense of place, reinforced by the cactus plants. This is Texas. We can all only imagine what drilling was like 10 years ago, but old imagery informs how tough the work was. This was an industry dominated by tough men conditioned to long shifts with little comfort. They played a material role in the history of America. Move forward a century and there are many eco warriors who frown on the oil industry. Their hearts might be in the right place, but they should not and cannot airbrush history. The discovery of oil in America so long ago played an integral role in both World Wars and the evolution of the free world. Texas would not be Texas were it not for oil and cowboys, and that has been true for five generations. Chanel Legs | by Tyler Shields. "Chanel Legs came to me in a dream where everything was oversized. The only issue with waking up and wanting to take the photo instantly is that everything I dreamed about didn’t really exist, so I set out on figuring out how to make this a reality. It started with having the giant box crafted and then finding the exact size of legs it took to come out of the box. It took about 2 months to get the box made with the logo on it. A lot of people would just add the logo in Photoshop, but I wanted it to actually be on the box and for the box to be as real as possible. It was definitely worth waiting for! Now I want you to take a moment and imagine holding your legs in that position for an hour. The Unusual Suspects by David Yarrow. 71 in x 108 in (framed). “Of course, we have worked in this room many times before and I know my light, my angles and the minimal depth of focus. We called last year’s photograph of the mountain men at the bar “The Usual Suspects” as that is exactly what they were. Some of those men rarely leave the warmth of The Pioneer Bar in Virginia City throughout winter - in fact they hibernate there. It proved such a popular image and has sold out across the world - in some cases raising huge sums for charity. So, when we went back this year, we thought it would be fun to have an additional crew member - Cindy Crawford. The word juxtaposition is over used in narrative, but I think we can get away with it here. The old boys may drink a bit and smoke a bit of weed, but they were on their very best behaviour that day - which is essentially still medieval. An international icon joining their party was not something they bargained for and at least one cowboy convinced himself it was the weed. We had to call the image “The Unusual Suspects” as a nod to her presence. The composition, which I could control, had to be spot on, but there is no way that I could control the wolf. It is a low percentage game this and we only came away with one shot - but we got it. Cindy looks fantastically glamorous and a little “bad ass” in her role, but, as always, it is the mountain men that take away the Oscars.
