HMONG FUNERAL better late than never, right?! this is my participation in the @hbtat2 art show a while back. this piece depicts my rendition of a traditional Hmong funeral. growing up i never truly understood death neither was i afraid of it. Hmong funerals taught me that death is not the end, the funeral itself brings people together to celebrate the life of a loved one as we work together for 3 days and 3 nights (straight), supporting our loved one onto the other side. aside from the spiritual beauty of death, Hmong funerals are beautiful themselves. not like your traditional funeral, Hmong funerals are vibrant with flowers, an abundance of folded money paper (gold&silver incense paper folded into boats), and murals. the smell of burning incense fills your nostrils when you walk-in. early mornings consisted of cheap coffee as the elder Hmong women prepare food for lunch and dinner. as the day goes by, you can find children being scolded by their parents for running around and falling in the home (iykyk). throughout the day, until the night, the family mourns and supports the loved one’s spiritual journey with the help of the drum and qeej (“kang”-Hmong bamboo flute) for guidance. at the end of the service, the family burns all the folded money paper as currency for our loved one(s) now in the spiritual realm. finally, at the end of the burial service, doves are set free as the final, physical farewell. although my description and painting can’t provide the true experience of a Hmong funeral, i hope you were able to learn and embrace a significant part of my rich culture. a practice i encourage all of my Hmong brothers and sisters to keep strong, one that i hope to learn and keep for myself and loved ones. never hold your breath, let your loved ones know you love them and hold them close to you. i love you all🩵 . . . #laniiisworld #hbtat2 #hb #humblebeginnings #humblebeginningstattoo #bayarea #bay #sj #sanjose #artshow #oilpainting #oil #oilpaint #oilpaintings #hmong #hmonggirl #hmongfood #hmongclothes #hmongfuneral #funeral #funeralservice #hmongpeople #hmongartist #hmongvillage #love #art #tattoos

I made this piece back in 2022, it was somewhat of a color practice piece, I tried a certain thingy maginy where I used the cool greens for the shadows and the warm greens for the lighter areas, so as the cool blues and the warm tones in the sky!
