In addition to interviews with filmmakers and musicians, including Bernardo Bertolucci, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood and Bruce Springsteen, the film features fragments of Morricone’s private life, recordings from his concert tours, clips of films he has scored and never-before-seen archival footage. Every time the @sditalianfilmfest rolls around, it marks another year I’ve spent in San Diego. I’m so happy I found this festival so soon after first getting here in 2019, and I’ve so enjoyed coming together with the same people (and some new people!) for 3 years now (skipped one for obvious reasons). I may only be able to blankly stare at people when they start talking to me in Italian, but thankfully the films come with subtitles. 😅 Every year I’m reminded both of the joys of taking the time to view international cinema, and of the beauty and incredibly welcoming nature of Italian culture. The tension between the guards and the convicts is palpable, and every choice they make can bring violence and repression. Gaetano (Toni Servillo), the captain of the prison guard, is the only one who can challenge mafia boss Lagioia (Silvio Orlando). Our FIRST film of our feStivale 2022, Qui rido io (The King of Laughter) will be screening on October 12th, 7PM at MOPA 🎥🎬 Naples, 1904: Italian theatre is thriving, and comic actor Eduardo Scarpetta is the box office king. Known in the Neapolitan theater for his cheeky alter egos, Scarpetta’s larger-than-life stage productions were matched only by his eccentric personal life. Composed of wives, partners, lovers, legitimate and illegitimate children (including a young Eduardo De Filippo, famed Neapolitan playwright), Scarpetta’s home situation resembled one of his comedies more than a traditional family. At the height of his popularity, the comedian risked everything by staging a parody of the great Italian poet, Gabriele D’Annunzio. Booed and hissed from the stage by younger rivals, Scarpetta was sued for plagiarism, leading to the first ever copyright lawsuit in Italy. Despite legal troubles and familial strife, Scarpetta fought not only for his craft but for his legacy as one of the great performers of Italian theater.
