We move on from “Years of Lead” and continue our foray into the poliozetteschi genre with “Rogue Cops and Rackateers: Two Crime Thrillers by Enzo G. Castellari”. The first film in this collection is “The Big Racket” from 1976. The film follows a rogue cop as he attempts to take down a criminal gang terrorizing local businesses. The films in “Years of Lead” felt like small, realistic crime pictures but “The Big Racket” lives up to its name with a grandiosity not present in those films. The core grit remains intact but like the American films it’s inspired by this is a loud, over the top action movie. A gang has begun harassing local store owners for payment, but the police are unable to discover who’s running the scheme. Constantly being undermined by superiors leads rough and tumble Maresciallo to exit the force. He investigates outside the law and manages to assemble his own force, banding together with community members who’ve been victimized by the gang. As the investigation continues Maresciallo is surprised to find just how deep the conspiracy goes. The film crescendos excellently as mystery gives way to action, resolving in a bombastic and highly entertaining final shootout! I really enjoyed having an ensemble cast in this picture. It widens the scope and allows for interesting discussions revolving around vigilante justice. Everyone does a good job, but leading man Fabio Testi really shines! I’m unfamiliar with his body of work but he definitely possesses macho star power. “The Big Racket” is a tremendously crafted crime film with many layers to explore. It’s loud, epic, and fun but still maintains the grit and bleakness of its genre. Вроде бы витиевато и запутанно, но в то же время просто. И с этим фильмом такая же история. Все смешано. Но нельзя оторваться. Фильм говорит, что это важно искать в прошлом и копаться, но не стоит забывать, что окружает тебя вокруг. Аличе Рорвахер, это наверное единственный режиссер, который может перенести на экран магический реализм, при этом не делая это кринжово, пошло и фэнтезийно. Рорвахер прекрасна передала эту атмосферу поиска артефактов. С одной стороны, это что-то магическое и очаровательное, а с другой, это что-то цыганское и жадное. П.с. Edwige Fenech is a beautiful corpse in Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972), one of Sergio Martino’s most revered Giallo films. Martino was always masterful at composing memorable shots and visuals. He brought elements of beauty and the macabre together in an incredible blend of horror and 70s fashion. In this film, Edwige plays the free-spirited Floriana, the hippie niece of the disturbed protagonist. She soon gets caught up in a web of seduction, evil, gothic horror and mystery, and things end badly for her. Gialli often unfold like Agatha Christie mysteries: with extremely complex plots, snobbish well-dressed bourgeoise antiheroes, and lots of scheming protagonists ending up in body bags. The film deals with the story of a young man and a girl during a new phase of their lives, where their fate intersects together in one of the random neighborhoods of the city of #Damascus.
