Have you ever been hiking along a trail in San Diego and spotted these bell-shaped-flower beauties? 🌿 Last Friday, our species of the week brought up a fun conversation about the striking similarity between the Summer Holly and Mission Manzanita, and we thought we'd dive a bit further! We can't be 100% sure whether our photo last week was Summer Holly or Mission Manzanita, not until we make our way back out to Iron Mountain and do some investigative work. 🔍 Up close, it feels like one of the biggest brain teasers to differentiate between their similar waxy, serrated leaves and white, bell-shaped flowers! Mission Manzanita is most distinguishable by its red, peeling bark, and though we've seen plenty hiking along the Iron Mountain trail, it is possible we stumbled upon a Summer Holly and snapped a photo of that beauty, instead. Today is National Bird Day! 🐦 National Bird Day was established to highlight the importance of birds, their "right to flight," and the notion that birds are more beautiful in the wild. We are thrilled to help restore and maintain habitat for San Diego's diverse bird species (among other wildlife). Though our overall goal is to support a multitude of species, restoring habitat for the Coastal Cactus Wren (pictured, by the wonderful Jerel Reeves) is the primary purpose for our 15-acre cactus scrub restoration project at El Monte Preserve in Lakeside! Our community "Family Day" fishing trip last Saturday was o-fish-ially a success! 🐟 We provided fishing lessons, birding, outdoor playtime, and arts & crafts to 80 El Cajon residents at Santee Lakes. We couldn't have done it without help from the San Diego Rod and Reel Club, who provided fishing poles, tutorials, and free prizes for the attendees. We had a wonderful time learning together in nature! We are thrilled to partner with @monarchjointventure on a new project! 🦋🧡 By December of this year, we aim to identify and work with 28 participants and their suitable home gardens to create habitats that support the monarch butterfly population. Throughout December and January, we will be installing these monarch butterfly gardens on each site to allow the plants to get established through San Diego's "rainy season." This initiative represents a crucial step toward the conservation of the western monarch butterfly and its habitat, emphasizing the importance of planting native milkweed in home gardens to support their lifecycle. Scorpions, moths, and beetles - oh my! We had an illuminating Creatures of the Night event earlier this month exclusive to EDI members 🦂🌌🪲 Led by Hector Valtierra, a professor of general biology and microbiology at Southwestern & Cuyamaca colleges, we observed various moth species, detected scorpions with U.V. lights, and used echolocation devices to track bats. It was so much fun and we can't wait for our next event, which coincidentally should be another illuminating one!
