Senior Spotlight - Sage My name is Sage Treloar and I am graduating from the Zoo Animal Technology program in the Spring class of 2024! I have always wanted to do my part for nature and leave behind something good in world. Since being in the program I have had so many incredible opportunities such as assisting in veterinary procedures, learning to construct and build as a General Apprentice, and learning a foundation of skills for animal training. During my time in the program my favorite part of my days has been one on one training with Eddie, the 42 year old White Handed Gibbon, and Bryson, a Visayan Warty Pig. Being able to build a trusting relationship to train behaviors for vet exams and voluntary health maintenance is something I’m very lucky to have been a part of. After the program I will be a seasonal bird keeper/trainer at Natural Encounters, Inc @naturalencountersinc! Black-eye peas are native to northern Africa, and they have been consumed throughout Africa, India, and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. The peas were brought to the Americas in the 18th century during European colonization and the enslavement of African people. They were introduced to Florida by enslaved Africans during the colonial period. They were grown to feed people as well as livestock. The peas were an important food source during the Civil War for soldiers and civilians in the South because they were a good source of protein that is inexpensive to produce. They remained a staple food after the war, particularly among the rural poor, and they were served in a variety of dishes such as ‘Hoppin’ John’ and usually alongside cornbread. April is Autism Acceptance Month! After partnering with KultureCity @kulturecity in 2020, The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is proud to help optimize visits for people with sensory sensitivities with the help of sensory bags! These sensory bags, equipped with noise-canceling headphones (provided by Puro Sound Labs @purosoundlabs), fidget tools, verbal cue cards (produced in conjunction with Boardmaker @goboardmaker) and weighted lap pads will be available to all guests at the Gift Shop who may feel overwhelmed by the environment. A quiet area within the zoo is designated for those who may need a quieter and more secure environment.
