Week 17: Franz Liszt, Orpheus My beautiful, attention hogging dog Achilles decided he wanted to model for my score of the week post and what better piece to do that with. A legend modeling with a myth. Orpheus by Franz list is a symphonic poem (1854) is a symphonic poem he's on the myth of Orpheus. I'm just going to say right now. This is my favorite of the Liszt symphonic poems. There's a kind of impressionism and how Liszt tells the story of the Greek myth in a way that is very evocative of the events. There's not really an attempt to literally depict the plot of the story through tableau, but to paint broader emotional strokes that fit the arch of the myth. (26/08/2023) ~ Concierto "Gamer Symphony" con "Epic Orchestra Valparaíso" (@epicorquesta) bajo la dirección de @danitzavillarroel.o ~ 🌌🎼🖤🎻✨💯 La verdad, esta es una de mis experiencias musicales más destacables, vividas el año pasado. Un proyecto que empezó de cero, y que con gran fuerza, tomó un increíble vuelo. Fueron muchos domingos de ensayos, así como muchos ensayos parciales de fila, con mucho compromiso y voluntad, sacrificios y pasión, un trabajo serio y arduoso, de nivel completamente profesional. Pero al final, cada gota de sudor y esfuerzo han valido la pena. Este fué nuestro primer concierto, y la verdad fué muy emocionante y una experiencia increíble. Cuando se abrió el telón, fue impresionante ver la cantidad de público en el Teatro. Todos quedamos plop con la impresión. La emoción y la adrenalina se sentía en el ambiente y en cada uno de nosotros. Estábamos nerviosos pero muy enfocados, y es por ello, que justamente entregamos todo y mejor en este concierto, que fué todo un éxito rotundo. El estar ahí, para mí tocando con tremendos músicos, y sentir la magia y el poder de la música que estábamos interpretando, la verdad, fue muy emocionante. Y es que dentro de mí, había una adrenalina increíble que no había sentido desde hace mucho. Un nivel de concentración y emoción absoluto. Estaba contento, y estaba dispuesto a entregarlo todo. Un incentivo de crecimiento y evolución, y un gran escalón subido, de muchos que quedan por subir en el camino. Le quiero agradecer de corazón al proyecto por la invitación, y en especial, a mi amiga y admirada musico y directora, @danitzavillarroel.o por considerarme, e invitarme formalmente a ser parte de este proyecto de gran nivel, con gran compromiso, profesionalismo y honor. Y conste! Este es solo el comienzo, porque muy pronto estaremos de vuelta en la escena, con nuevos repertorios, tocando en los teatros y escenarios nuevamente, haciendo magia y música para ustedes! OTD in Music History: Celebrated virtuoso pianist-composer Sigismond Thalberg (1812 - 1871) dies in Naples. Thalberg was *allegedly* brought to Vienna as a young man to study piano, and he also later claimed that he was actually in attendance for the very first performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s [1770 - 1827] “Ninth Symphony” in May 1824, but there is no hard proof confirming any of that. In fact, the documented beginnings of his musical education only begin in 1826, when he traveled to London to study with Felix Mendelssohn’s (1809 - 1847) childhood music teacher, Ignaz Moscheles (1784 - 1870). Thalberg gave his first public performance later that same year, and he quickly made a name for himself as a top performer – although he continued to pursue a broader musical education on the side, including taking lessons in counterpoint with celebrated pedagogue Simon Sechter (1788 - 1867). Today, Thalberg is best remembered for participating in a legendary “piano duel” against Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886), which took place in the glittering Parisian salon of Countess Cristina Belgiojoso (1808 - 1871) in March 1837. The two young virtuosos both pulled out all of the stops, dazzling the assembled audience with their keyboard pyrotechnics. So who won? French music critic Jules Janin (1804 - 1874) offered the following assessment in his published review: “Never was Liszt more controlled, more thoughtful, more energetic, more passionate; never has Thalberg played with greater verve and tenderness. Each of them prudently stayed within his own harmonic domain, but each also used every one of his resources. It was an admirable joust, and the most profound silence fell over that noble arena. Finally, Liszt and Thalberg were both proclaimed winners by this glittering and intelligent assembly… two victors, and no vanquished.” For her part, however, Countess Belgiojoso offered a much more enigmatic pronouncement: “Thalberg is the greatest pianist in the world – but there is only one Liszt." [Mahler Symphony No. 6 'Tragic'] 4/29/2024, Sir Simon Rattle, BRSO 만약 누군가 나에게 가장 좋아하는 교향곡이 무엇인지 묻는다면, 주저 없이 말러의 교향곡 6번 '비극적'을 꼽을 것이다. 'Tragic'이라는 제목처럼, 이 작품은 두 번의 해머 타격과 함께 비극적인 결말을 맞이한다. 그럼에도 이 교향곡이 위대하다고 생각하는 이유는 인간이 거대한 운명의 흐름을 바꿀 수 없음을 알면서도 투쟁하는 모습이 아름답게 묘사되어 있기 때문이다. 이 처절한 투쟁은 비록 패배로 끝나지만, 그 서사는 우리에게 깊은 카타르시스를 선사한다. 개인적으로는 2악장과 3악장의 순서로 스케르초-안단테를 선호하지만, Simon Rattle의 해석은 안단테-스케르초를 따르는 지휘자 중에서는 가장 훌륭하다고 생각한다. #tragic #symphony #mahler #simonrattle #orchestra

Earlier today, I attended the audio premiere of two compositions by a musical goliath, composer, and friend, Louis Dilegame, at Next Phase Sound Studio @nextphasestudio in Farmingdale, NY. These were copies of the full scores to read while listening. What a wonderful experience and fantastic compositions! Our connection stretches all the way back to our days in college (2007 onwards) at C.W. Post University (known as LIU Post @liupost nowadays). These two compositions are so well composed, orchestrated, and every meticulous detail was taken into account with such great care. The diversity, influence, and relaxation regarding not such strict structure/formulaic boundaries. Both contain such wonderful experiences that they definitely deserve to be commissioned and more.
