Our 1st Year Cricket side last week played their first match against Clongowes. The team came out second best on the day but had a great performance. The team then managed a tie with Wesley College Dublin last Wednesday and a win over The High School B’s by 8 wickets yesterday. 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝟔𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲 to Ranjan Madugalle (22nd April)! Former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain, Trinitian and a Royalist made a name for himself at both schools as a talented young Cricketer. His best was displayed at Reid Avenue whilst playing five seasons of 1st XI for Royal College as a stylish right-hand batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. Madugalle’ affectionately called was the Royal captain for the 99th (1978) and Centenary Battle of the Blues (1979). The Centenary battle, the first three-day encounter was remarkable and memorable for those who played in it and watched it. Madugalle (58) and Sudat Pasqual (66) put on a 117 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket, a record for Royal College pushing for a victory but the 3rd day’s heroics of CP-Halangoda deprived that. His best as a schoolboy cricketer includes 157 against St. Peter’s College, winning the maiden Bata Schoolboy Cricketer award in 1979, captaining Sri Lanka U19, playing a vital role with his all-round performances against Pakistan to win the ‘Ali Bhutto Trophy’, representing Sri Lanka at the ICC Trophy against Canada, made his ODI debut in 1979 World Cup against India. Madugalle then made his Test debut with Sri Lanka playing its maiden Test at P. Sara Oval against England where he top-scored in the 1st innings with 65 and put on a 99 run partnership with Arjuna. A heartthrob and the darling of the Sri Lanka side when it was looking for its best footings on the big stage. He played in 21 tests and 63 ODI’s and Captained Sri Lanka in two tests and 13 ODI’s. His best for Sri Lanka was the first match of the 3-Test series against India in '85, made a fighting 103 at SSC and was followed it by 54 at P. Sara which Sri Lanka won. Madugalle retired from Cricket in 1988, at the age of 29 winning his last match, a five-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup. In 1993, he took up the role of an ICC Match Referee and in 2001 he was promoted to Chief of ICC Match Referees and holder of the record for officiating the most number of Test & ODI's. Though Josephians lost the very first game, they bounced back and took the lead of the series with 25 wins against the 21 won by Peterites. They stamped their authority last year with a convincing win under Sadesh Jayawardena after going through a shock loss in 2022 when Vanuja Kumara led Peterites to a dramatic win. Today under Lahiru Amarasekerea, St. Joseph's College comes out as favourites yet St. Peter's College under Vishen Halambage, capable of an upset as they took honours during the 90th Battle of the Saints few weeks ago. A remarkable turnaround by Kingswoodians. after losing the 117th Battle of the Maroons just a week ago. Architect of this Kingswood victory was Kavija Gamage, who strode to the middle at 2 for 19 in the 5th over. Kavija rebuilt the inning with valuable partnerships and completed a classic century, 102 off 124 balls. He had partnerships with Aadil Sheriff (26), Nikeshala Nanayakkara (33), Yosath Abeykoon (24) and Banara Rathnayaka (31) and set a formidable score of 233 runs. After Senanayakians dominated the 1st day's play on the back of their skipper Gaviru Senhas' 200, their ace fast bowler Akmal Fazly ripped the heart out of Mahanama's 1st inning by taking 5 for 77 in 24 overs to bowl them out to 239 runs. Dulnith Sigera made 63 and Inuka Karannagoda made a fighting unbeaten 61 but Mhanama fell short by 131 runs against first inning's score of DS, 370. With more than a session's play available for the day Gaviru enforeced the follow on with the hope of going for a win, to which Mahanama openrs responded positively. The pair put on a record opening stand in the series, an unbroken 207 runs to restore their lost pride and salvage a respectable draw. In the process and by the time umpires called stumps Dulnith Sigera was unbeaten on 100 and Kavindu Amameth was unbeaten on 106. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟭𝟴𝟴𝟬; Congratulations to D.S.Senanayake College skipper Gaviru Senhas for entering the elite club with a magnificent 200 not out yesterday (29th March 2024) against Mahanama College at S.S.C. The first double centurion in the Battle of the Gold and the 06th batsman to cross the 200-run mark in Big Matches since the beginning of Big Matches in 1880. The list is headed by the Vidyarthian Thushara Kodikara, with his 217 not out against St. Sylvester's College at the Battle of the Babes in 1986. The first to score a Big Match double century was the late Clive Inman for St. Peter's College at the Battle of the Saints in 1954 against St. Joseph's College, 204 not out. The last to score a Big Match Double Century, before Gaviru was Lal Jayasinghe of Sri Dharmaloka College. 36 years ago he scored 206 not out against Gurukula College in the very first Battle of Kelaniya in 1988. An interesting stat is during the decade of 1980 there were four Big Match Double Centurions whilst Royalist Sumithra Warnakulasuriya missed out on scoring the maiden Double Century of the Battle of the Blues in 1980 when he got out for 197 runs. It's a run-fest on the first day at SSC while DS skipper Gaviru Senhas stole the show while entering an elite club with a magnificent 200 not out. The first double centurion in the series and the 06th batsman to cross the 200 run mark in Big Matches since 1880. Mahanama skipper Duvindu's decision to invite Senanayakians to bat first proved costly as DS opening pair Gaviru and Pesandu Weerasinghe (12) put on 55 runs for the 1st wicket in 10 overs with the skipper playing aggressively. He then partnered with Malitha Perera to put on 251 runs for the 2nd wicket and take the game away from Mahanama. Malitha scored a wonderful 118 and Gaviru hung around putting the Mahanama bowling attack to the sword. He scored 200 in 190 balls, inclusive of 02 sixes and 27 fours and then declared the inning at imposing 370 runs for the loss of 04 wickets in the 69th over. After being on a leather hunt for two sessions Mahanamians didn't let the situation get the better of them as they responded positively to put on 94 runs for the loss of 02 wickets in 17 overs when the umpires called play for the day. Sumangalians’ last recorded a win in 2007 under Iresh Pushpakumara. The two schools have produced players who have gone on to represent the national side in the likes of Tissa Eleperuma, Don Anurasiri, Indika Gallage and Dilruwan Perera from Sri Sumangala and the ace spinner Ajantha Menids and Nishan Madushaka along with Sarath Fernando and Bernard Perera from Moratu MV.
