When Covid hit in 2020, I unknowingly started an annual tradition that is now in it's fifth year - to walk up to Eype Down near Bridport in April/May and enjoy the bluebells in an absolutely beautiful and wild part of Dorset, far away from public car parks and the hoards of people.... The bluebells came early this year, but Beth and I managed to get up there today, sat on a log and enjoyed a cider, wine and catch amongst the most beautiful scenery with the most wonderful scents... Despite yet another grey and chilly morning, Dorset clearly decided today was finally a day for fun. Kingston Maurward was quickly bustling as people gathered to enjoy the first rural show of the year. By lunchtime, the main car parks for the Dorset Spring Show were full, the overflow parking was packed, and roads leading to the event were congested. Heading up the team behind the county’s newest event is Dorset County Show Organiser James Cox. "There's always a risk with a new show, especially with the challenging weather we've had," he told The BV. "But the team was confident it would be a hit, and we're thrilled that the public feels the same. It's been a fantastic first day." The show spread across the grounds of Kingston Maurward House, with craft and trade tents, big ring entertainment, and have-a-go fun. "It's turned into a fantastic spring gathering," James said. "Whether it's indulging in Dorset foods, buying local crafts, watching extreme sports, meeting lambs, or observing artisans at work, there's something for everyone." The event highlighted food, farming, and flowers, offering live demos of beekeeping, falconry, and baking. Visitors could join activities with Great Pottery Throw Down finalists, watch BMX bikers, see the gun dog display, and will be able to enjoy Titan the Robot on Sunday. Top tips for your visit – wear wellies, and take cash! Conditions were muddy, and many vendors only accepted cash due to poor data signals.
