Colorful Karacena – A very colorful pen full of saturated colors should delight lovers of colors. Individual pieces of stabilized wood were arranged in pairs without any spacers. Saturated color, different each time, is a contrast in itself. Here, we used various pieces of wood, from natural beech, through various shades of orange, pink or navy blue. The pen shimmers beautifully, and the changeable color makes it possible to look at it endlessly and find new shades. The two tone Bock nib perfectly matches the intensely orange section. My first attempt at the "Gisi" segmented pen pattern. While there is plenty of room for improvement it turned out almost perfect. This one started life as a Bocote pen blank, the accent wood is purple heart the white segments are credit cards. I love the high contrast of black and white, ebony and ivory, etc. I would be interested to try working with ivory some day, but for now I’m trying out some much more ethical alternatives. Here is some casein (a protein derived from milk) and Everine, a synthetic resin-based substitute. The conclusion of the segmented Corian test pieces is this set of pens. Each barrel is a lamination of four smaller Corian rods. I have previously posted about purchasing a large box of these rods from a pen and cue maker’s estate, and having never worked with this material before I am learning by experimentation. Two of the barrels I made with coordinating Corian (red/black and ivory/blue) and the third I tried three different Corian colors. The material presented some challenges, but I really like the weight of these finished pens and the “cool to the touch” stone/marble feel, they’re great to hold. Plus the surface finish is excellent, and the material really glows. I plan to make more of these, I have nearly 200 pieces of Corian in a variety of colors. I made this pen for myself as I really liked the black anodized aluminum kit. I thought it would pair nicely with some opal acrylic. It’s looks heavy but is quite light.
First time I’ve used this Jupiter pen kit (gunmetal and rose gold). Red Cedar wood matches it nicely. Looks like click but it is a twist (at the top). Very nice kit!
