Nighttime is a time of Magic … Yulia’s painting has cosy homes on the barrel that are reflected by magical houses in constellations on the cap; magical cats, stars that turn into fireflies, and a cat that glitters. Then there is Ursa Major and Minor, both of which feature in a wide variety of mythologies, and Polaris, or the North Star which has been used for navigation for centuries, and a constellation that looks like smoke rising from a chimney. Yulia’s (@sa.yuliaglas)’s use of colour on this pen is amazing. The background is a blueish-turquoise, some of the windows are a rust red, next to a tree with magenta flowers, another tree has butter-coloured flowers, the lamplight and fireflies are a glowing lemon yellow, and in amongst the stars are sparkles that look like the cap is embedded with dozens of tiny diamonds. We have added a mustard yellow section that works really well with the turquoise and yellows. This pen has a bronze cap band, section ring and logo medallion in the cap finial. Gaius Maecenas was a wealthy Roman statesman and advisor to the Emperor Augustus (formerly known as Octavian). He was born around 70 BCE and died around 8 BCE. Maecenas played a crucial role in the cultural and political landscape of ancient Rome during the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. Out of his love for literature and poetry, he supported and financed many writers and artist, such as Vigil and Horace to name a few. Maecenas's name has become synonymous with the concept of artistic patronage and support for the arts (maecenate).

Although we try to do everything ourselves, we often use new materials, including synthetic ones. Some of them are not available at home due to the technological process. Then we buy ready-made blanks/blocks, which are then converted into pens. Each material is slightly different visually and to the touch, so it is worth getting to know them. Part 10. Micarta This interesting resin laminate was invented by George Westinghouse in 1910. The basis is natural (cotton, canvas or jute) or synthetic fabric, which is embedded in resins. The presence of fabric in micarta makes it extremely resistant to mechanical damage, cracking and crumbling. Its resistance to water and extreme temperatures makes it non-shrinkable, which additionally protects it against cracking. In addition to fabric, you can use paper, fiberglass or carbon fiber for micarta. Production is not complicated, but requires specialized equipment because lamination is performed under enormous pressure to extract air from the material and replace it with resin. Appropriate pressing of the material in resin and the use of dyes allows you to achieve very interesting effects. Micarta is typically used to produce knife handles. We choose micarta with an interesting pattern for our pens, but we must ensure that the block, apart from being beautiful and durable, is easy to process and can be polished. Fountain pens with an uneven surface or flakes would not be attractive.
