We are BIG dog lovers at the Carl Davis Collection, as regular followers will be aware, and we are big fans of the canine silent star, Rin Tin Tin. Rin Tin Tin was a true Hollywood story; an immigrant who was the embodiment of the American dream. But Rinty wasn’t the first doggy star. There was Blair, the pet collie of British director Cecil Hepworth, and star of the 1905 thriller “Rescued by Rover.” And Teddy the Great Dane, a collie named Jean and an English pit bull named Luke. Strongheart, a German shepherd who made his debut in 1921’s “The Silent Call,” even had a dog food named after him. Harold Lloyd was one of a group of actors and filmmakers who founded the Academy Awards of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Lloyd, alongside other artists including Douglas Fairbanks, Jack Warner, Cecil B. DeMille, and Raoul Walsh, believed that the Awards would not only foster public respect for their industry but also that a body of the cinema's best and brightest could pool their knowledge for the collective benefit of film-making. The first awards ceremony was held in 1929 with two films winning the Best Picture Oscar; Wings received the award for “Outstanding Picture,” and Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans was awarded the “Best Unique and Artistic Picture” prize. The great Buster Keaton died #OnthisDay 1966, aged 70. Carl wrote "What makes Buster Keaton different from his two great rivals, Charles Chaplin and Harold Lloyd in the Hollywood of the 1920s? These three artists played very defined and different characters and supporting them in their differences is the role of the music. Keaton holds the hardest challenge. He was known as ‘Old Stone Face’ because of his inscrutable facial expression. What music can be found to express his extreme stillness? It’s his deeply expressive eyes that give the game away, responding with great intensity to events from which he’ll eventually respond with extremely purposeful activity. My silent film music guru, the late David Gill, producer with Kevin Brownlow of the ‘Hollywood’ series and the subsequent Thames Silents, set me on the right path. He explained that Keaton always had a project, some problem to solve and we, in the scoring, must be at his side to help solve it. Whether attempting a marriage proposal or winning a decisive battle, we must be there for him. Like Lloyd, Keaton’s films tend to end happily but sometimes there is a sting in the tail. But my scores always end on a positive note." #SilentFilm #BusterKeaton #silentmovie #silents #classicalmusic #classicalscore #blackandwhitefilm #vintagemovie #silentscene #silentera #retrovibes #cinemavintage

Congratulations to the @britishfilminstitute and to our friend Stephen Horne for winning the @SilentLondon award for 'Best silent film screening with a solo musician or small ensemble of 2023' for The Crowd (King Vidor, 1928). Silent London said: "A silent masterpiece, too rarely seen, accompanied by one of the very best in the business. Bravo, Stephen Horne!" Stephen incorporated Carl's main theme for The Crowd for the performance so we are incredibly proud. Bravo indeed! Buster Keaton: The Complete Short Films 1917-1923, was reissued on Blu-ray as part of The Masters of Cinema Series on 17 January 2022. The box set charts Keaton’s rise from his early association with Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle through to the box-office smash hits he headlined and directed, across a total of 32 films. The collection also features a host of extra material such as alternate endings for Coney Island and My Wife’s Relations, multiple scores on selected shorts and a 184-page book of essays on Buster Keaton. Four of Carl's scores are featured: The High Sign, One Week, The Playhouse and The Scarecrow. Using Chaplin’s old Hollywood studios in 1920, Keaton’s sophisticated technical inventiveness coupled with his haunted-yet-handsome ‘Stone Face’ persona, created a succession of the most timeless, classic comedy shorts ever realised. #Silents #SilentFilm #BusterKeaton #Eureka #silentmovie #classicalmusic #classicalscore #blackandwhitefilm #vintagemovie #silentscene #silentera #retrovibes #cinemavintage https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/buster-keaton-the-complete-short-films-1917-1923-reissue/

Today would have been the birthday of silent film director Hal Roach, who directed An Eastern Westerner and High and Dizzy. Carl wrote scores for both of these films and recorded them with the London Chamber Orchestra in 2014. When the album was released Carl wrote, "In 1920 Harold Lloyd created no less than five short films (two-reelers) which included ‘An Eastern Westerner’ and ‘High and Dizzy’. His leading lady, Mildred Davis, was soon to become Mrs Lloyd. The two films could not be more contrasting: ‘An Eastern Westerner’ opens in New York with Harold as a dissipated young man enraging his parents who banish him to their ranch in an un-named outlaw-ridden territory. ‘High and Dizzy’ couldn’t be more urban, moving from a doctor’s office to a very grand hotel. But running through this film is a very serious theme. The heroine is a sleep-walker and at the film’s climax places both herself and Harold in great danger. ‘An Eastern Westerner’ was composed in 2000 as a curtain-raiser to Harold Lloyd’s thrill feature, ‘Safety Last’, for an orchestra resembling the Paul Whiteman Jazz Band. Even when imitating Western themes I used the orchestra to emphasise Harold’s split personality. ‘High and Dizzy’, composed in 2012, has a more classical line-up utilising a beautiful aria from Bellini’s opera ‘La Sonnambula’ (The Sleepwalker). Following silent film tradition I borrowed copiously from the masters including Rossini’s ‘William Tell Overture’ and Wagner’s ‘The Ride of the Valkyries’ as well as the most iconic Western song of all ‘Home on the Range’ which both opens and closes the film." #Silents #Silent Film #silentmovie #classicalmusic #classicalscore #blackandwhitefilm #vintagemovie #silentscene #silentera #retrovibes #cinemavintage https://carldaviscollection.com/albums/harold-lloyds-an-eastern-westerner-and-high-dizzy

#OnthisDay1980 the first episode of Hollywood aired on ITV. Produced by Thames TV, the documentary series went on to win a host of awards including a BAFTA for Carl's music. In thirteen 50-minute episodes, Hollywood embraced the entire gamut of silent filmmaking, from the early pre-First World War pioneers to the end of an era when soundtracks came in. The series covered the introduction of the infamous Production Code to uphold moral standards; early war films such as King Vidor’s The Big Parade, and Lewis Milestone’s All Quiet On The Western Front, released in both silent and sound versions which controversially depicted trench warfare from the German viewpoint; slapstick comedy and the role of stuntmen; the great romantic leads (Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino and Greta Garbo); swashbuckling heroes such as Douglas Fairbanks; autocratic directors such as Cecil B. DeMille and Erich von Stroheim; the silent film comedians - Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Harry Langdon and Charlie Chaplin; the craze for Westerns and the role of the director and the cameraman. The final episodes dealt with the coming of sound, and the ultimate disintegration of the silent film industry, as well as the disappearance from the screen of those stars who failed to adapt to the new sound-based technology. Hollywood occupied Carl on and off between 1976 and 1980 when the series was finally broadcast on ITV between January and April. We're really looking forward to this new podcast from the @BBCWorldService and @cbc. Hosted by Oona Chaplin, Hollywood Exiles is set to launch on 22 January 2024. Hollywood Exiles is the gripping story of how Tinseltown star, and Oona Chaplin’s grandfather, Charlie Chaplin, became a key figure in a decades-long FBI campaign aimed at rooting out communism from Hollywood. The podcast unravels the real-life events that led to the notorious House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings and the era of the infamous “Hollywood blacklist.” The podcast features interviews with others affected by these events including the daughter of Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo, who wrote under a pseudonym, as well as descendants of other exiled writers and actors whose careers were shattered. #silentmovie #silents #silentfilm #classicalmusic #classicalscore #blackandwhitefilm #vintagemovie #silentscene #silentera #retrovibes #cinemavintage

The writer Paul Cuff recently shared his memories of attending rehearsals of Ben-Hur with Carl at Symphony Hall with the @thecbso in 2016. It's a beautiful, intricate piece that we're linking to in our bio. Paul ends, "Even if the precise memories of those days in May 2016 have faded, the impression made by Ben-Hur in concert grows in stature—especially now, after the death of Davis. Though his recorded legacy is strong, I hope his music will persevere in live screenings. It is here, in the ritual strangeness of a single, continuous performance of music before an audience, that the power of silent cinema is most fully revealed." #silentmovie #silents #silentfilm #classicalmusic #classicalscore #blackandwhitefilm #vintagemovie #silentscene #silentera #retrovibes #cinemavintage https://therealmofsilence.com/2023/11/19/carl-davis-score-for-ben-hur-1925/?fbclid=IwAR1donaxt2zIhUIuAvWdlQbofKrAqKUKo8bgAkWVylyKnZ3LIrF7A3VygsE

The legendary critic Kenneth Tynan profiles Greta Garbo, the enigmatic, iconic face of silent and early sound cinema. Carl scored many Garbo Silents including Flesh and the Devil, A Woman of Affairs and The Mysterious Lady. Carl told Wendy Thompson in her @FaberMusicPublishing book Maestro, "From a personal point of view I think the most fun for me as a composer are the romantic films, especially the Garbo films. They suit my mood and my character. I'm a romantic person, I believe in love. It's a great emotional work-out for me". Carl's acclaimed score for D.W. Griffith's Intolerance (1916) was reissued in October 2019. Conducted by the composer, the 1990 recording, performed by the Luxembourg Radio Symphony Orchestra, had not been available for over a decade. Intolerance is a milestone of cinema – released in 1916 it proved to be a commercial failure but soon came to be regarded as a major influence on a whole generation of filmmakers. Its director, David Wark Griffith, had come under criticism for his Civil War epic The Birth of a Nation (1915) and chose to make his next movie on the subject of “Intolerance”: “Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages”. Griffith used an ambitious and complex structure with four distinct but parallel stories demonstrating humankind's persistent intolerance throughout the ages. At the time of the film’s release this innovative narrative form confused the general public and having been produced on a massive budget, Griffith faced a commercial disaster as gigantic as the sets he’d built. To save some of his tarnished reputation he re-edited two normal-length features from the scenes he had shot which became The Mother and The Law and The Fall of Babylon. It was the collector and film historian, Raymond Rohauer, who, with painstaking care, undertook to reconstruct the original 1916 version of Intolerance out of what over the years had become something of a huge jigsaw puzzle. Today Intolerance can again be seen in the form it was intended – thanks to Thames Television and the “Thames Silent Series’” this version was first shown at the Leeds Film Festival, and subsequently the London Film Festival, in 1988, with a new and original score by Carl – which in itself is a superb example of musical storytelling. #silentmovie #silents #silentfilm #classicalmusic #classicalscore #blackandwhitefilm #vintagemovie #silentscene #silentera #retrovibes #cinemavintage

Carl's score for The Freshman premiered at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on 17 May 2013 played by the @TheCBSO and was subsequently recorded by the Chamber Orchestra of London for release in September of the same year. In the sleeve notes Carl wrote, "‘The Freshman’ in my view is a large scale film and benefits from a grander orchestration than the small ensembles generally used to accompany ‘silent’ comedies. In this 2013 draft (my third) I employ an orchestra of forty which would encompass music for the sports stadium scenes as well as a large-scale college dance and various crowd scenes. It also underpins the emotional heights and depths of the leading character, a ‘Harold’ obsessed with being ‘popular’. As football is the means he will use, a football theme is essential and, with its patriotic associations, a march. The popularity theme signals the jazz age and a love theme, minor key music for the college bully and a school anthem fill out the rest." Take a Listen!
