6TH STREET - Milwaukee has been awarded a massive $36.6million grant from the US Department of Transportation to rebuild & redesign 2.6-miles of 6th St to make it safer for not just drivers, but bikers and pedestrians as well. 6th Street from W National Ave on the cityโs south side to W North Ave on the cityโs north side will be rebuiltโ a massive change for Walkerโs Point, Kilbourntown, Hillside, Haymarket, Halyard Park, Bronzeville, and Harambee. The recently reconstructed portion of 6th Street that passes over the Menomonee River Valley will not be redesigned. The plan will see that the number of vehicle lanes & right-turn โbypassโ lanes are reduced, new trees will be added, sidewalks will be widened, separated bike lanes will be implemented, and transit lanes & โenhanced transit stopsโ will be installed where itโs seen fit. The project will also include upgrades to the cityโs sewer system. The Department of Public Works (DPW) is currently in the conceptual stage of planning. The DPW will allow for the public to provide feedback in 2025. Construction is expected to start in 2027 and be completed in 2029. Rebuilding 6th Street was one of the projects mentioned in the 2040 Downtown Plan, which has been pinned to the top of my profile.
