. . . #australia #newsouthwales #sydney #operahouse #sydneyoperahouse #opera #house  #newsouthwalesaustralia #travel #visit #discover #travelaustralia #travelnewsouthwales #travelsydney #visitaustralia #visitnewsouthwales #visitsydney #discoveraustralia #discovernewsouthwales #discoversydney #sydneyaustralia #sydney_insta #sydneyig #sydneyinsta #sydney_insta #sydneylife #sydneylocal #instadaily #instatravel #downunder

happy long wknd to those who've orchestrated themselves one! 🎉 visited @dose_espresso last wknd which has a tiny kitchen area but packs a punch with their offerings. their Italian toasted sandwich & four cheese one will have to wait for another visit, as we painstakingly narrowed our choices down to their classic Reuben and sausage & egg muffin. both were tasty while kids went with a cheeseburger and ham & cheese croissant. coffee was @gabrielcoffee ☕️

Things I’m good at: relaxing on the beach ☀️ Beachside camping is always such a treat, especially when the weather turns up like this 😮‍💨

4/24/2024, 10:52:00 AM

tried the canelé at still-newish bakery @flyinghatstleonards & was pleasantly surprised👍🏼 not as crusty as others I've had but it was a humid day so 🤷🏻‍♀️ just means I shall return to try again

I do like a palmier which is larger than my face! (choc ball for size comparison) @blackstarpastry's ones are super crisp & have random layers with cinnamon sandwiched btwn for extra fragrance the raspberrry lychee iced tea is reminiscent of *that* strawberry watermelon cake. also shout-out to the cute-as Black Star packaging fun fact: palmiers are called butterfly puffs (蝴蝶酥) in Chinese @westfieldchatswood #WestfieldChatswood

4/21/2024, 8:39:18 AM

this meal was less than $20 & that's incl $1 for the added black tea 🍜🍔🫖☕️ this is one of several meal combos from @rou_jia_mo - this one being classic potato noodles with a pork "burger". my chosen mild spice level of the bouncy noodles was very pleasing, with a hint of numbing, topped with a tangle of seaweed (?) strips, soy bean burd skin, enoki & sliced shiitake mushrooms, and a treasure trove of quail eggs, baby bok choy & dried tofu cubes buried underneath. the minced pork & diced capsicum "burger" differed from others I'd had with its flaky bun/pastry encasing the filling - a little messy but so fun to eat! @mandarin_centre

4/16/2024, 10:42:12 AM

hanging out with @flourandstone's old fashioned vanilla cake on my couch, wearing my "vintage" (aka old & faded) Peter Alexander kids' size 16 (back when they still made the size) Hello Kitty flannelette PJ pants on this unexpectedly chilly nite & getting into some work catch-up 💻 seriously good cake as always, but also value as so many places sell slices & muffins which are perhaps 1/3 the size of this piece but cost proportionately more. so this is a win for quantity AND quality

body clock may not be sure what time it is but it's always a good time for yumcha! 🫖☕️🥟 drinking tea & eating dimsum awakens the soul, which would be most welcome right now after dealing with a feverish food-poison-y/gastro-y kid for the past 2 days. and of course parent-brain automatically kicks into survival mode of preventing anyone else from getting it 🧽🪣🧼🫧 hope your place is dry & ppl un-sick

why yes, I am eating at all the new places which have opened at @chatswoodchasesydney haha 😉 first spotted @yanggafoods at Rhodes Central a year or 2 ago so was excited to see them bringing their kimbap/gimbap, banchan & other things to Chatswood Chase! this particular lunchtime saw us get a tub of japchae sweet potato noodles with vegetables, beef bulgogi & spicy fishcake kimbap which packed more heat than it looks 🔥

Mon to Fri if u get an egg waffle from @happylemonsyd, there's a deal for 50% off a drink. I got a grapefruit green tea but it was really the egg waffle I was there for 🥚🧇 don't think I've had a flat one before & this had great colour as well as flavour, if a tiny bit undercooked in the centre of each bubble. and that lemon packaging is too funny 🍋😉 @chatswoodchasesydney

3/31/2024, 9:41:21 AM

in @chatswoodchasesydney's still-renovating food court, @nomukoreanfriedchicken is having its grand opening today with freebies & giveaways. husband & I decided to avoid Easter long wknd crowds & visited when they soft-opened a couple of days ago🍗 check out the cute drumstick/drumette order number token! we shared snow cheese fries & a Nomu (burger) Box with seemingly a bonus wing piece (should be 3pcs, not 4). and becoz it was their soft opening, we were allowed to choose one flavour for the fried chicken burg (original) vs sweet & spicy for the wings. the box comes with a drink, kimchi, pickled radish, waffle fries & dipping sauces in honey mayo & spicy mayo flavours. everything was reassuringly crispy & not greasy - check them out if u're in the 'hood!

3/30/2024, 1:12:37 AM

chocolate hot cross buns from @blackstarpastry made with @kokoblackchocolate which the kids didn't even notice was dark chocolate 🍫 a soft & pillowy start to the long wknd!

3/29/2024, 1:14:56 AM

crêpes/galettes for breakfast, dinner, dessert, whatever! 🥞 took the kids to @fourfrogscreperie: mini-human went with savoury as expected whilst v2.0 chose a sweet option of course & they LOVED it. I enjoyed my lemon sugar crêpe which was beautifully crisp (and there really is a song for everything, @wooington!)

today is the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is branded as Harmony Day in Australia (by a past prime minister) as a celebration of multiculturalism. whilst doing so via international food lunches, cultural dress etc is nice & fuzzy, it doesn't address inequality & inequity - just like how pretty cupcakes on International Women's Day don't address gender discrimination ♀️ I participated in my workplace's Harmony Day lunch & enjoyed the social aspect of ppl coming together to share food, as I always do, but the notion makes me feel a bit ick. I made this Chinese smashed cucumber salad following a very reliable author's recipe, but it's not from my ancestors' area of China nor have I actually made it before 🥒 (👈🏼 this looks a little rude unfortunately?) it all felt a bit forced & fraudulent similarly, my kids never have cultural dress to wear to Harmony Day at school 🤷🏻‍♀️ no one in my family has owned or worn cultural dress for over 100yrs apart from when getting married. v2.0 wore a faux silky robe thing today & mini-human has worn the same orange t-shirt with cars on it for a few years. so just like how Ken's job is beach, my son's culture appears to be...just cars 🚗🚙🚘

3/21/2024, 9:13:15 AM

quick visit to @sandoitchicafe's new kiosk at @chatswoodchasesydney & I couldn't stop raving about the super-soft bread 😍 sad that they'd sold out of strawberry sandos but loved the prawn sando & the iced chocolate made with @morkchocolate. kids devoured the pork katsu sando but do not make our mistake of allowing kiddies near the buttermilk fried chicken sando - the sriracha mayo adds a seriously tasty kick!🌶 #ChatswoodChase

didn't get a chance to have curry fish balls whilst in Hong Kong (so disappointing & like, how?!) so had some at @kowlooncafe.com.au not long after they opened their latest (express-ish) store at Chatswood. the takeaway cups are now different but they still have my fave iced lemon tea in Sydney presently 🍋🫖 the char-siu was a little lean in the "char-siu with lots of eggs rice" (not official name heh) & mini-human really enjoyed the "fried chicken with stirred instant noodles" (also not official name 😅). and sitting outside next to the takeaway window turns out to be convenient for having your order handed to u!

3/5/2024, 8:55:37 AM

what's with the hot weather lately? does Sydney even have autumns anymore?☀️ on a similarly hot day we tried @kin.sydney next to the (mega) Harris Farm at Lane Cove. the staff are lovely, the coffee excellent & the food interesting as well as delicious 👍🏼 kimchi folded eggs on sourdough English muffins will make u question future muffin choices & the Reuben was proper tasty. I absolutely RAVED about my yuzu cold brew coffee with freeze-dried mandarin (a special at the time) - check out the pasta-looking wheat fibre straw 😉 kids had a tomato sauce pasta with generous side of parmesan, and a bacon & egg English muffin 🥓🍳

3/3/2024, 9:53:02 AM

previous date nite with @shih_squared: shaved ice, mango sauce, fresh mango cubes, mango pearls, whipped coconut cream at @amah.hojiak...& I vaguely recall hidden sago/jelly/chewy stuff underneath? so mango & so refreshing 🥭 @chatswoodinterchange

2/27/2024, 8:50:23 AM

shoutout to my super-talented food friend @tracytwong who cured & smoked her own bacon! 🥓 look at it in all its glorious streakiness & vacuum packaging 😍 plus it has sweet maple notes to balance out flavours. and there's a pack of pastrami to sample too *eeeee!* so grateful for food-generous friends super smoky pan-fried for brunch, with the bacon fat imparting smokiness to the eggs cooked in it too. can't remember whether there was bacon on this particular pizza but, hey, gratuitous pizza shot for admiring the beautiful crust from a low-yeast, long-ferment dough cooked also by Tracy in the Roccbox 🔥🔥🔥

2/25/2024, 8:43:30 AM

"cheung fun" rice noodle rolls with hoisin sauce, sesame/peanut sauce & fish siu-mai from @hongkongcafe.au at @macquariecentre by the way, anyone know why the internets have renamed them "rice rolls" of late? #HonKongStreetFood

2/21/2024, 8:55:33 AM

my beloved Doraemon as a maneki-neko lucky cat! 😸🧧very cute due to the ears "replacing" the robot cat ears Doraemon lost to a robot mouse. surprising part is the the helmet/headpiece being a silicone-ish cover stretched over the rest of Doraemon which is made from building blocks #RobotCat

2/19/2024, 9:31:52 AM

so last nite we finally had a casual #CNY dinner with a combo of bought, prev frozen, plus easy-to-cook things🧧sadly didn't have time to make @lifeindrummond's peanut cookies & no pineapple tarts from @phuocndelicious. I did get these cute pineapple-shaped guys but Phuoc's ones are superior wishing everyone happiness & health (esp no food poisoning)! 🎋

2/11/2024, 2:11:40 AM

it's Chinese New Year's Eve & we're not doing a reunion dinner "tuen nin faan" coz husband & I have just gotten over some food poisoning 😕 so here's some pics from a banquet meal I had with family in Hong Kong - there was double-boiled soup AND goose! that roast goose skin was so crisp 😍 (my 2 cents on #CNY vs #LNY: for me it's the former becoz I happen to be Chinese in ethnicity. I take issue with the pan-Asian-ness ascribed to the latter in the name of inclusivity however, as many Asian cultures do not follow the Chinese lunisolar calendar for which a new year begins tmr. as many have said, Asia isn't a mono-culture so it would be respectful to not treat the festival as such #EndRant)

2/9/2024, 9:17:21 AM

what's everyone having/had for dinner tonite? 🍽 the later it gets seemingly the more still & humid it's getting 🥵 could really go a hiyashi chuka from @manpuku_chatswood right now, a cold ramen "salad" which is part of their summer specials menu 🍜

2/5/2024, 9:28:38 AM

been back from Hong Kong for a month & getting stuck into work plus usual life with kids. there were many places on our wish list to see or eat at which we didn't manage to make, but there were lots of family yum cha meals with quality dim sum all round. it's an ideal setting where u have groups of more than 4-6ppl 🥟

2/4/2024, 8:57:54 AM

reliable dinner at @tsuiwahcafe once mini-human started feeling better, so he got to have another baked pork chop rice - with a bowl of white rice on the side to "dilute" things. also on the table were flat rice noodles with fish balls & fish cake in soup, boiled chinese broccoli "kai lan" & one of the better iced lemon teas of the trip 🍋☕️ the presence of little nubbins rather than cubes of ice is always reassuring

1/29/2024, 8:54:23 AM

birthday lunch for v2.0 after ice-skating was fish & chips from @fitchies_ 🐟🍟 excellent value with their family pack of 2 fish fillets (we went with 1 battered & 1 crumbed), 4 fish cocktails, salad (Greek or garden), 12 calamari rings & a mountain of chips. (note the absence of "seafood" sticks!) also very generous with the tartare sauce👍🏼 husband wanted to try the fish burger (it has pickles, yum) & decided on getting it as a meal ($19 vs $14 for the burg alone) so then we had many, many leftover chips to take home 😅

1/28/2024, 8:37:00 AM

my littlest baby turned 7 🎂 took her ice-skating ⛸️ she'd been asking to go again ever since we skated at a mini temporary place during winter. and we weren't taking requests, but she'd heavily hinted at wanting a smash cake so I assembled one: store-bought sponge loaf (castella cake from an Asian bakery), gummy bears, dark choc dome (was so worried about crackage that I made it too thick, oh well) & some strawberries 🍰🐻🍫🍓 (lots of dome left which will prob get melted into cake or brownie batter for baking)

I had read about @cacaolab.hk when they opened in Oct 2023. can't recall where & totally forgot about their location or that they're a bean-to-bar dark chocolate business established in Hong Kong. so it was delightfully serendipitous when we happened upon their Causeway Bay shop whilst looking for a mid-morning snack for the kids🍫 the shop is both chocolaty & buttery with bakery offerings 🥰 the mini cheese & frankfurt pastry as well as cacao dice were delicious, and the dice is also available in matcha flavour. friendly staff invited us to enjoy our snacks up one floor in their Japan/Scandi-esque seating area. the lime green, club-like stairs totally threw me but the super-relaxing space is a world away from the hustle-bustle of the surrounding streets. up a further level still is their Cacao Museum which was (hopefully for the kids) highly educational. and u bet I bought a box of one of their single origin chocolates back to savour

1/22/2024, 8:52:34 AM

sadly we didn't get a chance to have French toast on our Hong Kong trip, but here's one we had yesterday at @hongkongcafe.au - look at the crispiness & that height! there's also an adzuki red bean version instead of peanut butter this outlet opened at @macquariecentre late last year & has a HK tram-themed seating section

before we stepped into this Paradise Dynasty we knew nothing of its famed, rainbow-coloured, 8 flavours of xiao long bao (XLB) 🥟 we just happened to reach a point of needing dinner after shopping & saw a place with food our kids would eat plus no queues. served a starter of stewed peanuts & chestnuts, I knew that we'd be charged for it at this DTF-esque Shanghainese eatery but at least it was tasty 🌰 we went with an order of 6 plain XLB which had wonderfully thin skins & collagen-y broth inside. the black vinegar for dipping was dilute in colour & flavour compared with what I'm used to in Sydney the shredded white radish pastries were one of the drawcards for me as they've fallen out of yumcha trend in recent years & are harder to come by. piping hot & not at all oily, the radish filling was finely shredded & not soggy got a bowl of Shanghainese pork wontons with wheat noodles in soup (vs local Hong Kong-style with egg noodles) as none of us felt like rice, along with tangy pork ribs with plum sauce & stir-fried baby bok choy at places with proper table service like this, u get charged a 10% service fee. my only gripe was all four of us being charged for tea. I'm used to kids being waived or charged at half the price, but the food itself was great @paradisegrouphk @parkcentral_hk

1/18/2024, 9:10:24 AM

just a selection of prepacked takeaway sushi from a @hk_marketplace supermarket & some evening-discounted packs we had for dinner 🍣 also noticed lots of onigiri places at MTR subway stations - so convenient!

1/15/2024, 9:01:51 AM

sourdough pizza (& doughnuts) in Hong Kong!🍕 this made for an easy takeaway dinner but I would've appreciated being told there was a 1hr wait *before* ordering & paying rather than afterwards.(wasn't a public holiday nor event/festival.) really felt for them being hammered by delivery orders & hassled by delivery service drivers/riders who were crowding around their order counter tho didn't sample any doughnuts but got 3 pizzas: Classic (margherita essentially), BBQ Chicken (chicken, onion, coriander) & Maui Wowie (ham, sausage, pineapple) - photoed box of that last one & not the pizza itself 😅 @doughbroshk

1/13/2024, 10:14:27 AM

I was staying so close to a @maisonkayserhongkong that there was no way I wasn't going to try it 🥐 took advantage of a beverage plus cake deal for afternoon tea: coffee + matcha strawberry tart & houjicha + chocolate éclair, to sample things with east Asian flavours & others more traditionally French. delicious, great value (at approx AUD$14 per set) & wish we'd had time to try bread, croissants & other things. husband did get to have another coffee takeaway tho ☕️

1/10/2024, 9:00:12 AM

mini-human is a huge fan of cha chaan teng, Hong Kong-style cafés, with their mass appeal pricing of Westernised Cantonese foods. it was one of the things he was most looking forward to on this trip (along with checking out Transformers toys) & even declared he wanted to try all the cha chaan teng in HK 🤣 young padawan has no idea how many cha chaan teng there are across the city bahaha we ended up at a @cafedecoralhk for mini-human's first sampling, a fast-food chain of cha chaan teng, partly out of convenience & partly due to our nostalgia. it was met with his approval despite both kids' questions regarding the presence of pineapple. my throwback dish was the baked spaghetti bolognese along with iced lemon tea of course. and we were all pleasantly surprised by the char-siu & roast pork rice - the char-siu not being nearly as red as Sydney variants, glossy with sticky glaze & even distribution of lean meat vs fatty bits, while the roast pork was tender & juicy with super crunchy skin 💥

being in the area, we also swung by @bakehousehk to pick up some things for the following day's breakfast. tho it was evening when we arrived, still managed to get 2 plain croissants (approx AUD$4 each), a "sausage roll" & parmesan cheese stick. producing crispy viennoiseries in a warm & humid city is def no easy feat 🥐 no (portugese-style) egg tarts for us as they'd sold out/been pre-ordered by the time we got there but I was more interested in trying other things in any case

1/7/2024, 10:21:03 AM

the husband spotted @shakeshackhongkong while we were at @harbourcity so that became the next stop for a snack/meal. a Shack burger, cheese dog, seasonal special strawberry yuzu soda (sooooo refreshing & roughly AUD$5.40 only!) plus the best crinkle cut fries I've ever had 🍟 sadly no room nor time to try a concrete tho

1/6/2024, 9:01:03 AM

taking the kids to see the Victoria Harbour Christmas lights & @harbourcity for themed decorations, I conveniently detoured to @dangwenlihk. a ham & cheese croissant was had along with made-to-order madeleines filled with chestnut cream, served in a paper bag to resemble HK streetside roasted chestnuts 🌰 warm, fragrant, comforting & deeeee-licious!

1/5/2024, 9:54:56 AM

these "sugar spring onion pancake" things were really popular during my mother's childhood & are said to be from Teochew city in Guangdong/Canton. I used to come across them sold by an elderly man often outside train/MTR stations in the early 90s & on later trips inside 7-11 stores. that convenience store promo/partnership/revival appears to have ended & this was a completely random find at a Chinese sweets shop (think peanut candy, sesame candy, salty-sweet pickled & dried plums "wah mui" 話梅, etc) for approx AUD$2. a square of honeycomb-ish "sugar spring onion" (糖蔥 "tong chung") is placed on a thin pancake wrap then sprinkled with a combo of sugar & shredded coconut (plus sesame seeds sometimes) before folding up to enclose & placing in a small paper bag. u bite into it & try not to have the crunchy sweet contents fly everywhere!

1/4/2024, 9:13:11 AM

flashback to Japanese all-u-can-eat with husband's cousin where u order by the piece, before mini-human caught some sort of stomach bug from we-have-no-idea where. check out the mini tubs of Haagen-Dazs - don't think I've seen Biscoff flavour in Sydney?

12/30/2023, 9:40:43 AM

tea break at @agnesb_cafefleuriste at @popcorn.tko becoz we needed to rest our legs but also becoz I spotted the "valérie" mont blanc 🌰 kids shared the "jeanne" fruit sponge whilst @whatever_guy went with the "opéra au sésame", a sesame & houjicha take on the classic gâteau opéra

12/29/2023, 9:43:58 AM

nostalgia meal at The Spaghetti House at @popcorn.tko & was surprised by the quality!🍕 expected much less of the pizza & clam linguine 😅 the share platter was good value & v2.0 enjoyed her kid's meal

12/27/2023, 8:58:26 AM

reunited with beloved HK egg waffles 🥚🧇 crisper, lighter & less sweet than Sydney versions. this one's on the exxier side but still cheaper even with the weak AUD exchange rate 😕 #街頭小食

✨️Merry Christmas to all who are celebrating!🎄 have been in Hong Kong for under a week, lost track of which day it is (proper holiday mode) & seen lots of family so here is a suckling pig from Winter Solstice dinner in honour of Xmas haha 🐷 the skin is thinner & meat more succulent here, plus pic of my fave Schweppes cream soda

12/25/2023, 9:12:59 AM
