This week we're diving into stories from #MadisonParish and #TensasParish, starting with the indigenous Taensa Tribe for which the parish is named. The Taensa people lived in villages in the areas now known as Louisiana, Alabama, and possibly Texas. This painting by George Catlin depicts the chief of the Taensa tribe receiving 17th-century explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle. Henri de Tonti, a member of La Salle's expedition, wrote a detailed account of the tribe's village, culture, and art. For more history about the Taensa people, visit 64parishes.org.
