Turners’ Hall, a palazzo-style masonry building in downtown New Orleans, is an architectural ode to the German-speaking immigrants who came to #OrleansParish in the late-19th century. Originally it was used as a German social hall and the site of weddings, political rallies, gymnastics events, and other gatherings for the city’s German community. Here are some views of Turners' Hall throughout the years: 🇩🇪The first picture is as it appears today; currently the building is home to 64 Parishes' parent organization, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (@lahumanities). (Photo by Robert Brantly.) 🇩🇪 Turners' Hall fell into decline during the mid-20th century. From 1955 to 1979, it served as a furniture warehouse and used appliance store. New Orleans has a reputation as being a very French city (and it is), but the country that perhaps left the bigger architectural imprint on it is Spain. Spain ruled colonial Louisiana for 40 years, from 1769 to 1803. During that time, it contributed many notable landmarks, including the Cabildo. The Cabildo, one of three 18th-century structures that anchor New Orleans's Jackson Square, was originally the administrative seat of the Spanish crown in Louisiana (1794–1803). After the US acquired Louisiana, the building served as New Orleans City Hall (1803–1836) and the Municipal Hall for the heavily Creole-populated First Municipality during the period when New Orleans was divided into three districts (1836–1852). Discover the rest of the Cabildo's rich history on 64parishes.org. 💫 (Photo: The façade of the Cabildo in 2023. One conversation in 1699 radically changed the course of Louisiana history. 🗺 France and Spain weren't the only powers with the hubris to claim vast expanses of territory in the Americas. Sometime in the 1690s, an English physician named Daniel Coxe purchased a land grant that allegedly gave him claim to the land extending from “North and South Carolina [across] that part of America which lies between the thirty-first and thirty-sixth [parallels], from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, with the exception of Saint Augustine and New Mexico.” This grant disregarded countless Indigenous territories, but also flouted the understandings held by Spain or France that the Mississippi Valley fell within their domain. Coxe sent two ships up the Mississippi anyway with the intention of "building a fortification and settling a colony.” However, before that could happen, one of the ships ran into a 19-year-old Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, sieur de Bienville, who quickly outmaneuvered the English forces with a single conversation. Maybe because it was once part of "No Man's Law," an area of Louisiana that was temporarily outside the jurisdiction of any country, but #BeauregardParish has given rise to some colorful characters and curious tales. 📍DeRidder's "Hanging Jail" has an imposing gothic facade and an equally intimidating history, having been the site of an execution in 1928. More recently, tours have taken visitors on hunts for the former prisoners' ghosts. (Photo by Cheré Dastugue Coen.) 📍One of the more interesting individuals to come out of #BeauregardParish is that of Leather Britches Smith, a labor rebel and mythic outlaw who is said to be buried face down on the edge of the Merryville Cemetery. (Photo by Keagan LeJeune.) 📍Elected governor of Louisiana in 1940, Merryville's Sam Jones broke the Long faction’s 12-year hold on the office. This red-cockaded wookpecker may be little, but it plays an oversized role in the effort to restore longleaf pine forests in Louisiana. 200 years ago, longleaf pine dominated the southeastern United States. That is, until the lumber industry devoured them and replaced them with faster-growing loblolly pines. Today the Nature Conservancy is working to restore longleaf in Vernon Parish. However, this requires managing existing forests with prescribed burns, and a delicate interplay of time, weather conditions, and the red-cockaded wookpecker dictate when those burns can happen. But in late summer 2023, an act of arson accelerated the process. Discover the full story on 64parishes.org. Click the link in our bio to read "The Long Game." (A red-cockaded wookpecker. Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️ The parades and festivities that gripped New Orleans this weekend are influenced by the legacy of Irish immigrants to the city, as Irish immigrants and their descendants formed one of the largest European ethnic groups in Louisiana. Check out these other looks at Irish life in the city through the years: ☘️ The Irish channel, a mostly working-class neighborhood in New Orleans, was originally settled by immigrants from Ireland in the early 19th century. However, the area also included German, Italian, and African American residents. (Photo by Dan Leyrer, courtesy of the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.) ☘️ New Orleans is home to numerous St. Patrick's Day organizations and hosts various events to celebrate the occasion. Photographed here is a hall with tables set for formal dining, including streamers, hats, party favors, and American flags for decoration. (Photo by John N. Teunisson, courtesy of the Louisiana State Museum.) ☘️ Irish immigration in the early 19th century brought English-speaking Catholics to New Orleans, a city dominated by Creoles, descendants of the French and Spanish settlers of the previous century. By the 1830s, religious and linguistic demographics of the city were changing and a church for those who did not speak French was needed. St. Patrick's Church was founded in 1833 and the church was completed by 1840. (Photo by Dan Leyrer, courtesy of the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.) The backroads of rural #BienvilleParish are typically quiet, except for a fateful day in 1934 when notorious bank robbers Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker finally reached the end of their run. The beginning of the end for Barrow and Parker came when they got separated from an accomplice at a cafe in Shreveport. Officers learned of this news and, thinking the fugitives might want to reunite with their friend, laid in wait on a road leading to the accomplice's father’s home. If you've driven within 10 miles of Natchitoches and haven't stopped for a meat pie, are you even a real Louisianan? Here are a handful of facts about your favorite savory hand pie: 🥧 The tradition's origins are unclear, but it was likely the result of cultural intermingling between the French, Spanish, and Creoles of color who called the region around Natchitoches home. 🥧 The pie's popularity exploded in February 1974 when @housebeautiful magazine published a story praising Natchitoches and its meat pies. A wave of national media attention followed. 🥧 In 2002 the @nytimes reported that Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen and Restaurant served between 400 and 1000 meat pies each day. Chris Jay dug deeper into meat pie lore in "Man vs. Meat Pie," out now in the current issue, but that particular story is only available to print subscribers. Down an unassuming road in #DeSotoParish is one of the "South's Most Beautiful Chapels"—at least according to Southern Living magazine. Rock Chapel, as it's known, was erected in 1891 by an order of Carmelite monks. The tiny chapel is only 15 by 25 feet and was built with stones from nearby fields and creekbank mud as mortar. Aside from being a peaceful refuge, this Carmelite outpost may have a deeper history. Some have posited that Rock Chapel was the first place to educate Black people in DeSoto Parish following the Civil War. Others argue against the claim, saying that the chapel was merely a place of spiritual contemplation. No matter the case, this beautiful landmark merits a visit. Would you believe this rolling landscape is in Louisiana? Or rather, it was. The Sabine Reservoir is a popular fishing destination, but its creation came at a high cost (and we're not talking about the loss of this vista). At least 400 families were relocated before the dam was built. Among the displaced were members of the Choctaw–Apache Tribe, who themselves were descendants of people who had been displaced. With Mardi Gras behind us, we're back to our regularly scheduled programming of exploring all 64 parishes in 2024! Let's start the week in #SabineParish, which is the site of the Coral Snake Mound produced by people of the Marksville culture. The Marksville culture is named after the Marksville site, which lies in the town of Marksville, in Avoyelles Parish. People of this culture were less concerned with hierarchies and status objects, as evidenced by fewer ceremonial centers and mortuary items compared to other contemporaneous cultures. Learn more about the Marksville culture on 64parishes.org. Click the link in our bio. Photo 1: Burial mound in Marksville. Photo by Stephen J. Conn. Photo 2: A Marksville-culture village scene. Today in 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed an executive order that forced over 110,000 Japanese Americans to relocate to War Relocation Authority family camps. These camps were in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. The situation in Louisiana was slightly different. Enemy alien internment camps like the one at Camp Livingston housed men who were unable to become naturalized citizens and instead were given resident alien status. Then, when the US declared war on Japan, that term changed to "enemy alien." In "Hidden in Plain Sight," Sarah Simms and Hayley Johnson describe what life was like for those interned at Camp Livingston. Read the full story on 64parishes.org. North Louisiana’s Tony Joe White, known for his hit "Polk Salad Annie," was the primary referent of the very small musical genre called “swamp rock." Somewhere along the line, the West Carroll Parish native picked up the nickname “Swamp Fox.” He was active up until the end of his life, releasing his final album Bad Mouthin’ only a month before his death at age 75 from a heart attack. Washington Mardi Gras, which is happening now, consists of four days of festivities in D.C. Largely attended by politicians, lobbyists, and their staff, this weekend-long party has also been known to host a few (or a dozen) queens, all representing Louisiana's various industries. Think the queen of Delcambre's Shrimp and Petroleum Festival, Crowley's Rice Festival, and others. In this 2020 photo (expertly captured by 64 Parishes' Editor-in-Chief, Erin Greenwald), a photographer attempts to squish a bevy of sparkling monarchs inside a single frame. This week we're diving into stories from #MadisonParish and #TensasParish, starting with the indigenous Taensa Tribe for which the parish is named. The Taensa people lived in villages in the areas now known as Louisiana, Alabama, and possibly Texas. This painting by George Catlin depicts the chief of the Taensa tribe receiving 17th-century explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle. Henri de Tonti, a member of La Salle's expedition, wrote a detailed account of the tribe's village, culture, and art. For more history about the Taensa people, visit 64parishes.org. Last week, Louisiana lawmakers passed a bill ending the jungle primary system for certain elections including Congress and the state Supreme Court. This unique system, which can put multiple Democrats, Republicans, or other candidates on the same ballot, was the brainchild of Governor Edwin Edwards. Any candidate with a simple majority wins the election. If no majority exists, the two top candidates move to a runoff election, which theoretically could pit two Democrats or two Republicans against each other. As of now, the jungle primary system remains intact for the governor's office, state legislative seats, and other positions. Caddo Parish has produced many influential figures throughout the years, including: 🪗 Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter, one of the most influential folk musicians of the 20th century, was born in Mooringsport. (Photo courtesy of Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.) 🪗 Emma Wilson Emery, Louisiana’s first and longest-serving poet laureate, wrote poetry about romance, nature, and anti-war sentiments, and spent much of her life in Shreveport. (Photo: Emma Wilson Emery’s Academy of American Poets membership card. Courtesy of Hill Memorial Library at Louisiana State University.) 🪗 C. C.
