On this day, 30 years ago, on 29th April 1994, Commodore International went bankrupt. This was the beginning of the end of production and development of the Amiga. Also the end of #AmigApril 2024 - hosted by @blueyakk_retrocomputing and myself - is near, and though it's Monday I try to make a double hashtag post with #gamingmagmonday - hosted by @my.retro.tech and @bl85gamer. Pictures 3 and 4 are from the Commodore biography Volkscomputer / On the Edge, which tell the last days of Commodore. The first two pictures are the 7/94 issue of Amiga Games. In the editorial senior editor Hans Ippisch talks about the downfall of Commodore, but keeps the hopes up that the Amiga business will continue, possibly saved by some investor or buyer. At the time of writing Commodore was negotiating with Samsung. Today we know that this didn't worked out. After a short episode with Escom the ultimate commercial end of the Amiga was 1996. But the Amiga itself lived on, and today, 30 years later, we still celebrate this wonderful machine 😃 #retrogaming #retrocomputing #videogamehistory #videogames #homecomputerhistory #homecomputer #commodore #thefallofcommodore #fallofcommodore #amiga #amigagames

I was looking for information what happened to the Amiga after the fall of Commodore. So I scrolled through some old Amiga mag of '94 to '96 and found some interesting insights. For example there were negotiations with Samsung and Dell. Also Commodore UK under David Pleasance wanted to take over the brand and develop new Amigas. But in April 1995 german computer manufacturer Escom bought the brand and the technology. They hat big plans. Bring back the A600, the A1200 and the A4000 back into stores. Build an A1200 with CD-Rom, a faster 68000 and more memory, called A1300. Develop a backward compatible successor on PowerPC or ARM basis. Here is the 10/95 issue of german Amiga Games. 1.5 years after the end of Commodore Escom just brought back the A1200 and the A4000 to stores. On this occasion the mag made an interview with the press spokesman of Escom about there plans. Sadly, bringing back the two models was the only achievement of Escom. They went bankrupt in July 1996 after growing too fast. So this is my (digital only) entry for both #gamingmagmonday - hosted by @my.retro.tech and @bl85gamer - and #AmigApril - hosted by @blueyakk_retrocomputing and myself. If you want to browse old german gaming mags, look up kultmags.com which has officially permitted scans of most of 80ies and 90ies mags. #amiga #commodore #escom #thefallofcommodore #amigagames #gamingmag #retrogaming #retrocomputing #homecomputer #homecomputerhistory #videogamehistory #computerhistory #16bit #90ies #90tiestech
