On this day, 30 years ago, on 29th April 1994, Commodore International went bankrupt. This was the beginning of the end of production and development of the Amiga. Also the end of #AmigApril 2024 - hosted by @blueyakk_retrocomputing and myself - is near, and though it's Monday I try to make a double hashtag post with #gamingmagmonday - hosted by @my.retro.tech and @bl85gamer. Pictures 3 and 4 are from the Commodore biography Volkscomputer / On the Edge, which tell the last days of Commodore. The first two pictures are the 7/94 issue of Amiga Games. In the editorial senior editor Hans Ippisch talks about the downfall of Commodore, but keeps the hopes up that the Amiga business will continue, possibly saved by some investor or buyer. At the time of writing Commodore was negotiating with Samsung. Today we know that this didn't worked out. After a short episode with Escom the ultimate commercial end of the Amiga was 1996. Il 23 aprile 1982, il mondo dell'informatica assistette alla presentazione del Sinclair ZX Spectrum, un home computer che avrebbe segnato un'epoca. Prodotto dalla Sinclair Research Ltd nel Regno Unito, lo ZX Spectrum si distingueva per il suo prezzo accessibile e per le sue dimensioni compatte, diventando uno dei principali concorrenti del Commodore 64 in Europa. Federico Faggin. He's one of the true pioneers of the history of computing. And he is coming to the HomeComputerMuseum! This is very big news! On June 8th, he will visit the HomeComputerMuseum in the Netherlands and will even hold a Q&A where you can ask him everything about designing the Intel 4004, 8008 and 8080, or his startup Zilog, or perhaps about Synaptic, or his insight in AI . On June 8, 2024, between 15:00 and 16:30, Federico will do a moderated Q&A. This session will focus on his monumental contribution to the (home) computer and the information age. But of course, it is also important to him that it partly addresses his new insights regarding AI. The HomeComputerMuseum is closed for visitors. While Bart is being busy in the US, the museum keeps on working too. Here's an example of what happened today. As you all know, we have an Aesthedes 2. A big CAD-computer from the early 80s. It was one of the first CAD-computers available. The HomeComputerMuseum has restored it to a nearly 100% working one and soon we'll receive the predecessor too, an Aesthedes 1. Since we managed to image the entire harddisk, one of the friends of the museum, Enrico, really got into the filesystem and recovered a few deleted files and projects. He also rebuild the filesystem and put these files back. Willy, one of the technical people at the museum, put this new image on the SD-card. Yes, our Aesthedes 2 is running from a SD card using BlueSCSI. Willy has loaded a few recovered files from this rebuild image and this is what was inside of them. This is just a small portion of the many files recovered by Enrico. Interesting to see where this harddisk was used for back when this machine was new.
Electric Dreams (1984). This movie has really grown on me over the years. Though corny and sappy at times, it was actually ahead of it’s time in ways. Getting into the spirit of #AmigApril by @blueyakk_retrocomputing and @zeratul2099 with my Amiga portable, accompanied by a TheMOUSE! This is an old Microsoft Surface Pro running a copy of Amiga Forever. Although I still have my original Amiga 2000, this is a more practical way to enjoy playing with an Amiga, given the limited space I available. It also allows me to play with a ton of different systems and configurations. So, what does a computer museum do on the first of April. Repairing donations and preparation for new collection items coming in. The little 'egg' terminal works now, and we even got the first output from the Cromemco. But this rusty beast needs some more TLC to boot fully. We also rescued 2 Atari 1040STf to a fully working state. Lastly, we're preparing for the IMSAI 8080 that comes our way. Of course, we will rebuild the Wargames setup. And, next week, our founder, Bart, is heading to VCF East, which is held on April 12 to April 14. Make sure to visit there. The HomeComputerMuseum will bring some Dutch things!

We finally have one, the Osborne Executive! The successor of the original Osborne was launched in 1982, and the final computer produced by the company that brought you the first commercial portable computer. It fixed a few flaws from the previous Osborne, though this one clearly has a flaw that we will address. Similarly, the screen goes to black multiple times, so we had to connect an external monitor to see if it worked. Some jiggling with the brightness control did give a picture, usually for a few seconds, but enough to make photos! We will nicely clean this so it can show its massive 7" display nicely. With 13 kg, this is considered portable in 1982. Thank you, Gert-Jan of the company Levix (@levixcs), for donating this long wanted computer and 3 display cases that we will use soon in the museum!

The Nintendo DS Download Station! A very rare object in the museum that nobody notices. But it does work! You can bring your Nintendo DS (or 3DS as did one of our new volunteers) and play the games that can be downloaded from the Download Station and will remain on your DS for 24 hours! These Download Stations were found in shops where they sold Nintendo DS Games so you could try out the game before you bought it. Sort of shareware version. I wonder if something like this still exists in modern stores.

Our Commodore 128D requires some attention on our socials ;) Since the very early beginning of the museum, this Commodore 128D is part of the powered on computers. It never had problems, apart from one key of the keyboard, which was fixed a while ago. Kind of shame we put Commodore 64 games on it. The Commodore 64C is next to it, which shows different games but still C64 games. Is there anything we can let the C128D do that can't be done by a C64? We prefer something interactive, but a nice demo would be cool too. And yes, we have the C128, too, which is not set up.

Slowly reconstructing the 70s space in the museum now we have added 2 display cases. A big thanks to our friends of @levixcs for donating these. Soon these will be filled with some special computers which we don't have yet. Levix kindly donated a few more display cases, which will also have some unique material in them. A part of a donation where the second part will follow soon... Tom is cleaning up and putting these items in the museum today. To our surprise, the Apple Macintosh SE/30 still worked! Impressive, since most of them have battery damage or capacitors leaking. This doesn't mean we're not replacing them. That's why we have already got the board out. The hard disk did die, unfortunately. The Cromemco probably has a lot of spiders inside, given the amount of cobwebs on the ports. We'll force them to move. Tomorrow, we'll see if it still works. The black Macintosh PowerPC and the A4 Apple Display are nice, and as the CHE-1 and the terminal, we'll test them tomorrow and find a nice place in the museum. Thanks, Tom!

Another great day, many visitors, and a lot of donations! The Compaq Portable III that was donated came with the original Compaq bag. The first start gave a memory error, but after a few tries, it started up. It counted slightly more than 1MB of memory. The 2 Kaypro IIs we didn't test yet. Those RIFA filter capacitors will explode, and the typical smell is not something we want on a Sunday afternoon in a museum. We will fix them, and these will most likely be sold. We already have a few of these models. Similar to the Italian M24s of Olivetti. Not sure if ours is fully functional, and if not, we can use these. All in all, great donations, and we're very happy with them.

We finally have one complete! Since the early beginnings of the museum, 6 years ago, we've been looking for the first IBM PC compatible computer from Philips; the Philips P3100. This computer from 1984 has an Intel 8088 CPU, 128K of memory (expandable up to 512K), a 10MB harddisk and double sided, double density floppy drives. It was a very slow IBM PC compatible, running at 0.8x the speed of a normal IBM. This computer wasn't made by Philips, but by Cordata and is a relabeled Corona PC. It's successor, the Philips P3102, was made by Philips as well as the successor of that one, the Philips P3105 which became famous under its other name, the Philips NMS 9100. Next to the full set, we also got the marketing manuel of it. With some handwritten notes by mr. Dick, who was a salesman for this computer at Philips and who kindly donated it to us. We're very grateful for this addition to our Philips collection, making it pretty much complete (until 1980). We will scan the books and make them available as soon as possible, because this is some true Dutch history!

All our vTech Laser computers together.. In our early 80s area, we have put the 3 Laser computers that we have together. Since these are based on the Z80 CPU, we have put them in the part where all the Z80 based computers are. We have to prepare for something that will most likely be happening in June this year. The Hong Kong based company vTech (Video Technology Limited) created the Laser 200/210 in 1983. It features a Z80 on 3.5 MHz, 8KB of memory, and built-in BASIC. It uses the Motorola 6847 video chip, which is the same one as can be found in a Tandy TRS80 Color Computer series, Dragon32, Acorn Atom, and more. When you start it, it shows a green screen like the CoCo. Its successor is the Laser 310 from 1985 with more memory (16KB) and a better keyboard. Also released in 1985 is the Laser 500 and the 700. The 500 has 64K memory, and we think a different video chip, while the 700 (not pictured, but in our collection) even has 128K of memory and support for a floppy disk. As you can see, we do not have a ton of information about these machines. We only know about its IBM-line of computers, which became Laser Computers Europe B.V. and were produced in the Netherlands. As many Dutch people will recognize from the famous commercial in 1996 with Katja Schuurman! Did you own one of these computers back in the day? What did you use it for, and what were the best games for it? Maybe we can actually put these active in the future.

It currently smells like IKEA here because we are opening a (small) library! Around 10 IKEA Billy closets will be filled with magazines, books, and manuals, which we will put right at the beginning of the museum. Even before you have paid €10,24 entrance fee. Yes, you can sit on one of the comfy chairs or on the comfortable couch with neat HomeComputerMuseum pillows and get your magazine of choice or one of the manuals to have a nice read, FOR FREE! We can even get you a coffee or tea for your comfort. However, you will need to pay for that. If you ask nicely, you can even borrow it and take it home (for a small fee). It is not only old books, either, even a few new ones like the amazing books of David Pleasance about Commodore and Amiga, or the Shift Happens book of Marcin Wickery about keyboards, and many more. The library will be open 7 days a week from 10:00 till 17:00. We expect to open it half into April. We first need to build a ton of Billy cases and select the books we will put in there. Yay, books!
