Reminiscing on David Vosburg’s ‘Time, Enforced’ from LOCUS: IX, December 2021 at my gallery space The Martin - which is now featured at Yes Project Space in David’s solo show which opened last night! I met Yes Project Space’s curator Dennissa doing the LOCUS project and met David with the LOCUS show in 2021 which has led to the three of us creating, showing and working together time and again. The large art world can be very small and you never know who you’re going to meet. ♥️ “ambulatory” by David Vosburg is up until April 13th at @yesprojectspace 📸 @mkjoss / @yesprojectspace

NYE hopefuls: tonight is the cutoff for refund requests so keep an eye out for tickets coming through today and early tomorrow! Tomorrow night visual artist Cay Mims brings her community focused conversation and art practice event humbleDeity to The Martin, featuring Prints! Prints! Prints! artists Jill Nahrstedt & Jessica Malatia. Designed to challenge the typical approach of an artist talk, Cay invites the audience to have an open dialogue with artists about their practice, what it means to be an artist, the art community and more. Rounding out the discussion the artists share a bit of their practice with the audience as well - uniquely transitioning all within the walls of the room to be able to also claim the moniker of artist through their knowledge and creation. This event is free to attend! Doors at 6:30pm and the event begins at 7. Link in bio to RSVP.

My vision for opening The Martin in June of 2018 was to solve a problem in the event landscape of Chicago that I was experiencing as a producer. I wanted a safe, flexible and affordable storefront in which artists could thrive, be seen and understood and overall: create. The deep sense of loss I felt in our sudden closure in March 2020 due to COVID-19 after almost two years of rising to that occasion was immense. To be given the opportunity to reopen in June of 2021, adjoined to Split-Rail which I had called a home away from home for years prior, was a dream I didn’t even know I had. The past two years have provided clarity, direction and inspiration for myself and our growing, changing and thriving community. Today I announce the official, final close of The Martin - a space that bears my father’s name, has grown up with me and will forever be a pillar in my artistic career and exploration in Chicago. Our final exhibitions will have their final weekend with us December 8th - 10th. Along with our closure announcement we are announcing the close of Split-Rail. I’ve been on the team at Split-Rail for six years and have been grateful for an endless amount of opportunity, growth and knowledge from the generous minds of so many - but especially Zoe and Michelle. Our vibrant, queer, events-driven cocktail lounge Dorothy will continue on and I still proudly serve as the Creative Director of the bar - getting to produce events at a rate, impact and variety I could have only dreamed of when I sought out my own business in 2018. I have found great peace and pleasure in the Curatorial field and will continue to work in many spaces with my focus always being to uplift, encourage and elevate young, queer, hungry, talented artists. You can follow me at @whitneycurates for future calls, shows and more. Our Hospitality Collective is called Drinking Policy and you can follow us @drinkingpolicy to stay in the know on where you can find us next. Thank you for believing in me, supporting my dream and loving The Martin right along with me. 🤍Whitney

Monday night artist Cayla Mims brought her community focused conversation series humbleDeity to The Martin, interviewing artists Lillian Heredia & Matthew Brett who are featured in the MUTED & MIGHTY exhibition. When Cay pitched the series to me I understood her passion and remained curious about breaking down the traditional artist talk along with a shared artistic practice that she sought to bring to the gallery. They all rose to the occasion and I had a special opportunity to witness artists speak about their work in an elevated but not unreachable fashion. Cay reminded us that we are all artists. And then her grandmother boldly told us to get over our fears and actually believe it. Follow @humbledeity for future gatherings. 🤍 MUTED & MIGHTY closes tonight at The Martin, 6-9pm.

The Martin is proud to announce our final solo exhibition of 2023: Mikey Mosher’s CONTAINER CONTINUUM. Container Continuum is a reflection on the relationship between objects and their containers. Coming out of a convergence of interests in religious objects and collage, Mikey Mosher’s latest body of work explores how the process of designing containers and then collecting and arranging objects to live within them can be a contemplative and revealing practice. By building these simple and materially humble enclosures, Mikey attempts to create a space for modular divination with found objects to find permanent homes for them and create a harmony of symbolic associations with their surroundings. This arranging process opens doors between compartmented versions of the self, past and present, imagined and real, intellectual and intuitive, physical and psychological. Join us for the opening night of CONTAINER CONTINUUM at The Martin from 6-9pm on Friday October 6th. The opening coincides with West Town's First Fridays, so stop by other galleries in the neighborhood for an art experience that expands all through West Town! 🔵 Link in bio to RSVP. 🔵

One of our works in the show was made possible by a generous collaboration from an incredible art resource we have here in Chicago: Latitude! LATITUDE is a nonprofit community digital lab in Chicago that maintains a digital lab with high-end printing and scanning equipment, C41 film processing, operates an artist-in-residence program, and organizes ongoing arts programming. They gladly welcome all members of the public, including artists, photographers, students, educators, and enthusiasts. Latitude assisted in making an artist proof of Tim Cooper’s “Who Cares” work for our show as you see framed here - a perfect print that he can replicate time and again at Latitude specifically! Latitude has SO many resources, classes and a talented staff to guide any questions or needs. In the early days of her curatorial practice, our Curator even took their how to hang artwork class which led to the knowledge she uses and teaches in the gallery today. Latitude’s Artist in Residency call for 2024 is open now - applications close on August 31st. Interested in purchasing a print of Tim’s work- supporting not only the artist but Latitude itself? DM or email today or stop by and ask how.

Having Dennissa on the team now opens up the possibility of doing bigger and more immersive takeovers and builds - we’re dreaming big for next year and I can’t wait to see what we come up with.

Last week The Martin’s Curator Whitney and Gallery Assistant Dennissa paid a visit to The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art - an incredible museum just on the other side of Western Avenue on Chicago from where The Martin lives. The staff was kind enough to invite us in to tour their two galleries currently showcasing Yulia Gasio’s “Donbas, Ukraine 2014 till the Present” & an exhibition of the museum’s permanent collection chosen by their staff. Tomorrow night our shared neighborhood of West Town hosts First Fridays, encouraging galleries in our vibrant neighborhood to stay open late to welcome in art fans across our corner of this city. When you come to visit us for MIRROR, MIRROR’s opening we encourage you to plan your visit around stopping by UIMA (open until 8pm). We’re lucky to have such an amazing institution so close to us and are thankful to be connected! West Town: best town.

He then joined us for the Return exhibition in June 2021, took over The Robin in January 2022 and featured again in the Midnight Things group exhibition in December 2022. We love Sam’s sculptural work and seeing it grow! “Explicit Decoy (For David and Nancy)” featured in this exhibition features leather, copper & pipe - and has been sold!
