‘Gratitude to Grahame - Light on them Dunstan hills’, Tarras, New Zealand ©Christopher David Thompson. ___ I grew up in Auckland, (North Island, New Zealand), not far from the ocean, and didn’t travel to the South Island until a family road trip when I was a teenager, so my only knowledge and understanding of how it looked before that was through the influences I found in books, postcards and paintings (this was gasp, pre-internet!). There were three exceptional visual artists that had a huge influence on my understanding of the southern landscape and its light as I was growing up, photographers Craig Potton and Andris Apse, and painter Grahame Sydney. I am quite sure their way of looking at the world had a great and profound impact on my developing love for nature and especially my appreciation for the beauty of the landscape. I very quickly fell in love with the South Island and particularly Central Otago, which has now thankfully been my home for the last 13 years. With all my hiking and time in the wilderness here I have treasured moments where I have seen what they saw, and what they captured so beautifully and so meaningfully. There is immense feeling to the way the light falls on this land, the colour of the shadows, the feel of the air or the glow in the sky, it surrounds you and astounds you in equal measure. I feel blessed to immerse myself in it, and owe a debt of gratitude to those who influenced me so. And to think, I very nearly decided to leave all my camera gear in the car! My first hike in over a year and it was a beautiful blue-sky calm late Autumn day, my least favourite conditions for photography, so much so that rather than lug all my camera gear (about 23kgs worth) 1200m up a mountain I was very close to leaving it behind, but then reminded myself that as with a lot of equipment - it truly is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it! I’m so relieved it made the slow journey up the hill with me, as we were treated to the most magnificent dusk of beautiful blue shadows… Looking out on such a grand and impressive landscape it’s hard to imagine what might be an artful way to capture it, until you see something within the scene… looking through the rectangular parameters of the camera’s viewfinder you begin to see and craft the art within the landscape. It’s then that the magic and artistry of nature meets with the photographer’s eye and talent and if everything comes together a beautiful artwork is achieved. This has always been one of my favourite places in Wanaka, a little bit of wilderness so close to our ‘back yard’. No two visits are ever the same, and I was visiting here during and after heavy rain, so this tall unimpeded waterfall had quite an abundant flow on this occasion as opposed to its usual trickle, the stream too, beautifully voluminous… how long have these mighty boulders rested here, how often do they get nudged further down the valley…? Out enjoying the first of the Autumn storms, once the tumult of rain had swept over me the skies began to lift and little windows of late sunlight began bursting through to light up the textures of this wondrous land... the gorgeous hues of an Autumn landscape, dry, and cooling, yet to see the burst of colour that sweeps through the trees... and just ever so magical to be out in it, every which way I turned there was beauty to be found. The evening the first of the Autumn storms arrived I was able to get out and both endure and enjoy it! Pelted with rain & freezing winds, as snow fell in the mountains... always so completely invigorating! And as I hoped... the storm broke as evening fell, the sun lowered to peek between the clouds... and the magic started happening! From one of the greatest days I’ve ever enjoyed in the New Zealand wilderness... My jaw was dropping for hours on end, and what should have been a 3-4 hour hike between huts turned into an epic shooting session that prolonged my hiking day to about 7 hours! Sailing along the remote southwest coast of New Zealand, had a very strange feeling to it... so far away from everything, especially humanity! Apart from a few fishing boats and the other occasional tourist boat, you are out there all alone... the land appears out of the mists, as though shrouded in mystery, so alluring, so untouched... it truly is utterly magical. I cannot recommend such a journey enough; a week aboard Real Journey’s vessel The Milford Wanderer, was one of the greatest trips of my lifetime, I saw so much incredible nature, witnessed light unlike anything I’d ever seen, met some wonderful people, and was hosted by a brilliant crew... what more could you ask for! Trying to photograph from a commercial flight through plexiglass windows can be a bit of a challenge, but so stunning was this almost otherworldly terrain below that I just had to try. I love the shot - though sadly it has some imperfections, small random areas that are slightly blurry - nothing to do with the camera or lens, but possibly imperfections in the aeroplane's windows or maybe due to their curvature and the angle of the camera to the the window - anyone know? (Anyway, they are hard to spot!) It would be awesome to get back up there in a helicopter or plane with the doors off and get some more perfected shots! . Having not touched my camera in months and with almost no ‘free’ time in just as long, I decided the best I could do, was drive out to one of my favourite spots late in the day with a small window of opportunity, to see how the recent snow was sitting on this iconic range… Well, pressed for time I jumped in the car and made my way towards my destination - only to be surprisingly thwarted by a group of rally cars that had closed the section of road where I was wanting to go! Gutted! After seeing my evident disappointment, one of the wardens jumped on the radio to see if there was a possibility of letting me through… sure, I just had to wait for 2 more cars to finish on the stretch, so I parked up to wait, clock ticking and evening light changing fast… finally both cars were done, and I asked if I could now go through? No, you have to wait until they’ve all gone back the other way! Damnit! So I waited… the cars were starting at intervals of about 5 minutes so having waited for 3 to go I gave up, it would be dark before they had all gone and I hadn’t even gotten to see my mountain range. I headed off back up the road and just went looking for new spots to view one of my favourite scenes… Sadly I was too late for the best light, but even still, there was a big front coming up the valley and that made things look pretty interesting as the light slowly faded.. . There is no trickery here, it is simply a photographic technique where the shutter is kept open for a long duration, enabling a certain randomness in the result, depending on how long the exposure is. Clouds, water and the elements are in a constant state of movement and flux, but landforms remain solid and fixed, every resulting image therefore unique, and to a degree unexpected and surprising. The two most common questions we get in the gallery generally come from two different types of customer, the first is a generic one; “What’s your favourite image?” A question I find I can’t answer, in a way, they are all my favourites… The second question tends to come from a subset of our gallery visitors, other photographers: “What camera do you use?”. Everything changes so fast; the seasons, the landscape, photography equipment, image software, and one's approach to, and thoughts about, art... So, it's often well worth re-visiting older images and giving them another look with a more experienced set of eyes, and vastly improved technology. This particular image has long been a quiet personal favourite, though I've never yet put it on display in the gallery, without really having a reason for not doing so! As winter approaches us again here in Wanaka, I wonder if I'll be treated to mornings like this again, it's pretty rare to have snowfall down to lake level like this, so when it happens it's always an incredibly special time. 'Autumn Cloud Study 1' Over Lake Wanaka, New Zealand. ©Christopher David Thompson The first snows arrived, transforming our landscape, it's my favourite time, when bare mountains get clothed in their elegant drapery once more. The accompanying stormfronts moodily fight for space in the sky. I was lucky enough to be outside over the dusk, and was just enraptured by the colours and textures of the skies above me, it's always interesting to frame these theatrics in the viewfinder of the camera, a study of clouds... 'On the Mole' Aramoana, Dunedin, New Zealand. ©Christopher David Thompson I found myself briefly in Dunedin overnight on Tuesday, and went exploring for an hour or two. I'd left glorious 25 degree celsius sunshine in Wanaka, and arrived to 12 degree clagged-in drizzly Dunedin - how remarkable that two places so close geographically can be so different climate wise, but that is one of the joys of New Zealand! Out wandering with my camera, it's the closest I've felt to travel in nearly 5 years! The Dunedin climate, architecture and landscape is just so very different to my hometown. At times it felt as though I was in England, or perhaps on the Icelandic coast, with its rugged sparseness, or perhaps that was only my imagination and will to be once more in foreign places... Wandering the coast in such bleak conditions was actually a rare treat... the mist creating such a sense of atmosphere. It’s very rare for me to want to include humans in my landscapes, but this person walking their dog completed the composition for me! . 'Windswept & Demure' Somewhere in New Zealand. ©Christopher David Thompson Yep, here she is again 🙂 Revisited recently during a windy patch of weather. As with everything here in Otago, it's in a constant state of change, the lake level had dropped by a good metre since my previous visit, which provided some new challenges, but also new insights into different compositions - it is such fun exploring and learning new photographic 'subjects'. This is a long exposure of 6 minutes. I've always enjoyed long exposures, as they have an element of randomness to them that I really enjoy. The best thing I can liken it to, is the work of a printmaker, whereby with a linocut print the lino is painstakingly cut and carved with a well designed composition, inked up and then slowly run through the press... the image might be a constructed 'known' factor but the process of running the print has an element of the 'unknown', the ink might not be spread evenly, or the paper might move, therefor there is a degree of random outcome. It's much the same with long exposures, I know what the composition is, the solid objects (landforms and tree) are a given, and while I know the direction of movement of the fluid elements; the water and the clouds, I don't entirely know what patterns they will create over the duration of the exposure... 'The Wildest Welcome’ the Roaring Forties, Southern Coast, New Zealand. ©Christopher David Thompson . Gulp. We were now just minutes away from being deposited into our sea kayaks to face this wild wind. The mouth was dry, the fear and nervous excitement palpable, what the hell were we thinking...? The adventure was about to get seriously real, and seriously dangerous. Thankfully we would be away from the worst of this wilding sea on an inner harbour, but the unpredictable and monumentally fierce wind would soon be our greatest foe. We obviously lived to tell the tale, and what a tale it became, a fantastic adventure, the desire to explore such wild places has not diminished, and I long to return to these incredible shores... It seems ridiculous now in hindsight, that our original plan and hope had been to kayak up the outer coast of the island, but that plan quickly got scuppered when we saw conditions like this upon our arrival. It was quite the baptism and wake-up call! 'A New Muse' Somewhere in New Zealand. ©Christopher David Thompson So now I have new muse, that I discovered while out kayaking a few weeks ago. The night grew clear from a calm day, not quite the conditions I was hoping for, but I was there, so moved around seeing how it felt from different angles, how the backdrop changed, how the shape and slope of the tree altered, how the light fell, at times endeavouring to make a capture. I now know that she's a bit of a tricky beast, due to her shape and position, so I look forward to visiting again, whenever the time may allow, the weather might provide more interest and more simply, when I have the mood and inclination! But for now, I will sit with this composition for a bit and revel in its calm simplicity, subtle tonings, zen like feel, and ponder how else I might see it in time... grow little muse grow… . 'Quiet Silhouettes' Lake Paringa, Westland, New Zealand. ©Christopher David Thompson I adore this time of day, that time of in-between, a time between warmth and cold, light and dark, sounds of the day versus sounds of the night, somewhere between the sunset and the stars. In photography we call it the 'blue hour', for obvious reasons. The colours are intense, it's a blue like no other, especially here in the crystal clear skies of southern New Zealand, there's a peculiar hush that falls when it is this calm, although the evening chorus of birdsong reverberates still, there's something about the chill in the air that creates this feeling of a quietening, as though all but the nocturnal creatures know that it's time to wind down, and soon to rest... The sculptural forms of the Westland podocarp forest tower tall, as though guardians of the night, the resplendent moon's reflection dances in the shallows, soon it will be time to pack the camera away, bid the hordes of biting sandflies goodnight, and retreat into the tent for some well earned sleep .
