‘AUCKLAND’ Looking back on my first week or so staying in Auckland, NZ. Another beauty of a day to be grateful for. Lox was able to eye up the course, take it in and go hundies before other budding scooter enthusiasts turned up. His confidence has grown steadily since taking up scootering and we hope this will continue to grow and give him the push he needs to be happy at school. Term 2 starts tomorrow and Lox will be in auraki (mainstream) and we are content with our decision for him to remain. Through our journey we’ve had to make some tough decisions, some scarier than others but we’ve always maintained that Lox’s wellbeing must always come first. Even if it meant doing something different to others. Lox has come along way and he’s no longer that ill little boy fighting to be here with the rest of us. He’s now a kid with his whole life ahead of him and the inspiration behind a grassroots charity that celebrates, supports and raises awareness of tamariki (children) and rangatahi (youth) with different abilities and their whānau (families) by being a vehicle for their stories. Lake Marian Track is a half-day tramping track from Hollyford Road in Fiordland to Lake Marian. The start of the track is 1 km from Marian Camp. Although it is considered quite a tough walk, it has become very popular, as reflected in the large car park amongst the trees. The track starts with a swingbridge over the Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kā Tuka, then an easy, well-maintained 10-minute walk through beautiful forest to the fabulous boardwalk above the Marian Creek waterfalls. Anyone can do this part of the track; it is a great option with limited time. From there, it changes dramatically to a rough 90-minute to 2-hour tramping track. There are rocks, slips, tree roots, mud and some clambering, and a 400-metre climb to 700 metres above sea level. On the upside, it is a mostly beautiful rainforest. Massive rock slides have created some open areas with great views. At the end of the track, you reach beautiful Lake Marian, surrounded by the 2,000+ metre Darran Mountains. Round the mountain and the Tongariro crossing were some of the most interesting landscapes on the TA so far. Adding a few days to do the extra track was definitely worth it to see the mountains and volcanoes from so many sides! We got lucky with excellent weather and clear skies for the crossing to see Mt Ruapehu.
