2023 LSPR is a wrap! On the first loop on Friday we were just trying to shake off the rust since it’s our first event back from SOFR where we put the car on its side. We were a bit off of the pace through first loop but nothing too terrible. The plan was to push a bit harder on the second loop, but at service we found a bad inner tie rod joint which caused us to toss on a spare tie rod assembly with no time to get the alignment adjusted properly. This resulted in a car that was an absolute nightmare to try to keep pointed straight on the second loop which caused us to lose a lot of time but we made it through and kept the car on the road. We stayed late at service Friday night to get the car all sorted for Saturday, hoping to put down some competitive times and while the car felt good and we were having a ton of fun, there was absolutely no way that we were going to catch up to the fast guys. The decision was made to go into “drive to survive” mode just to ensure we made it to the end and that’s exactly what we did. We pushed where we could and backed off when needed and through attrition we ended up on the podium in 3rd place! Not much progress on the 2023 rally re-prep unfortunately. I've tried to make some progress but my back has had other plans as it has decided to exit stage left a few times now. I was able to get the @samsonasmotorsport_official suspension out this weekend so that I can send them to @fercomp_samsonas_usa for some spa treatments. We'll also have some fancy carbon fiber bits inbound from @geoffsteelracing in a few weeks! This is from stage 2 at LSPR (2022). The stage was cancelled due to a car fire (small fire, everyone was OK) and during the transit through, the fuel pump relay decided to give us fits. It was a wet, snowy, and just a overall shit day. We tried to POR but ultimately decided to retire for the day and headed back to base camp early to get a jump start on fixing the car. One more Menge Creek video! This is a clip of the last minute of the stage, where it really opens up and gets fast. The majority of this 3.38 mile stage is more tight and technical but towards the end is where you can give it the beans. We hit 102mph in this clip which was our top speed for this stage and had an average speed of 59.96mph, good enough for 12th overall and 1st in our class. We had such an amazing time at the Show-Me Rally this past weekend! Out of the 31 teams entered, we started 6th on the road behind some very talented and super fast teams. We knew we needed to be on the ball from the start and we did just that! Out of the 14 stages we ran, we had 8 stages where we had times in the top 4. We drove fast and took chances and it definitely payed off! We ended up 2nd in our class behind an insanely fast Ford Fiesta R5 team and 3rd OVERALL for the entire rally! And yes, that is a 3rd place AWD trophy we're holding. Day one of the @showmerally100aw is in the books! We've been pushing hard and taking some chances and so far it's been paying off. The car was absolutely brilliant on Friday! We had a few "oh crap" moments where we hit two HUGE freaking rocks that tore up the HDPE under panels of the car. Long post warning... I haven't been in the mood to post anything lately but I'll try to get out of that funk. LSPR definitely didn't go as planned as the car stalled out on us while transiting a cancelled stage. We were just trucking along and all of a sudden the car just died. We managed to coast to the side of the road where I quickly tried to diagnose the issue, my initial thoughts were that we lost the fuel pump. After checking the fuel pump fuse and verifying it was good, I went straight to the source and started to remove the fuel feed line off of the pump. I slowly slid the line off and to my surprise, we still had fuel pressure! If there's pressure in the feed line then that tells me that the pump didn't just die on its own otherwise there'd be zero pressure. Slapped that all back together and went back up to the fuse/relay box and just started shaking things. I reached in and tried to start it up, BOOM, it runs! We quickly jump back in the car to try to catch up but ultimately the car kept dying on us to where we had to make the decision to retire for the day at the start line of stage 3. This gave me time to really dig into the problem which I quickly found after pulling the fuel pump relay (EKP Module) out. As you can see in the pictures, one of the terminals got hot and melted the socket and started melting the relay. I was able to clean it up good enough to get the car running again but at that time it was too late since we've already retired for the day. We managed to drive all the way back to service with no issues and then loaded the car up in the trailer to head back to our VRBO where we would rewire the relay. The rewire worked! LSPR was a difficult rally this year. We woke up Friday morning to the tragic news of fellow competitor, friend, and mentor Al Dantes Jr. ( @towercity50 ) passing due to an accident caused by a drunk driver. The decision was made to still compete and to press on regardless. We ran the first stage FAST with an Overall Regional stage win! Unfortunately, we experienced an electrical issue while transiting stage 2 that forced us to retire for the day. We rejoined on day 2 and miraculously ended up on podium in third for regional O2WD due to a series of unfortunate events causing others to DNF. Congratulations to @midwestwankel and @kyleroberts1987 who took 1st place, and it was fitting that an RX-7 won. We were lucky to have a couple overall regional stage wins, multiple class stage wins, to be able to be around the rally family during this difficult time, and to be on podium to pour one out in honor of Al with some amazing O2WD competitors. Out with the useless BMW oil level/oil temperature sender and in with a @moreheadspeedworks oil temp sensor flange with an @autometerproducts oil temperature gauge! Shout out to Morehead Speed Works for making one of these with NPT threads so this was a direct fit. This will help us to see what our actual oil temps are out on stage so we can make the correct adjustments to the oil cooling system, if needed. LSPR prep is underway! First on the list is to fix this huge dent that we got while TRANSITING through a stage that was red crossed. Due to a car fire, we had to drive through the 12 mile stage at 35mph avoiding huge rocks along the way. Somewhere along the stage a boulder that we never saw ran under our car and jumped up into the floor, just behind the left front wheel. This weekend was the @ojibweforestsrally and what a weekend it was! Last year we got our first ever DNF here but this year we took FIRST PLACE in Regional O2WD, and SECOND PLACE in Regional Overall! This is the first time we have ever stepped foot on an Overall podium, to say that we're excited and proud would be an understatement! Rally update! Day 1 and 2 are in the books! We are currently getting ready to start the the final day of the rally here in McArthur, Ohio. So far everything has gone just OKAY for us. With a 7 month hiatus, my driving has been a little bit rusty and hesitant, especially while I try to quickly learn how to drive with the new engine and power. We definitely botched a lot of corners while at the same time nailing others perfect. The last stage yesterday we hit 115mph on a straight and then overcooked the turn and almost center punched a tree, fun times, this is rally. Zero issues with the car, it has been nothing but fantastic. The new engine is pretty amazing, I just need to figure out how to fully utilize the extra power. With all of that said, we're currently sitting in 3rd place, just 40 seconds behind first place. Day 3 starts here at 11am, and we still have 10 stages to go! Taking things apart wasn't exactly what I had planned for today. During some spirited test drives the car started throwing a "Throttle position sensor deviation" code. These cars have 3 throttle position sensors, one on the gas pedal, one on the throttle bodies, and one on the throttle actuator. The gas pedal and throttle body sensors are new which leads me to replace the final one on the throttle actuator. Hopefully the new sensor and a calibration will fix the issue because we're @southernohioforestrally bound in three days! Getting down to the final items on our "To Do" list before we leave for @southernohioforestrally. I'm currently replacing an original Vanos Solenoid Coil Pack with a rebuilt/upgraded Beisan Systems unit. We weren't having issues with the unit currently on the car but we did have a bad one when we first built and started the motor. The 2022 @southernohioforestrally is right around the corner! Today we look back at last years SOFR where we ended up #lucky to finish after we slid off the road and hit a small concrete structure. So here's the final dyno graph of the session, final numbers are 312hp/258tq. The used computer we bought had a tune on it which we were unaware of which is why our base numbers were so high (306/255) and why there weren't much gains to be had. Typically this motor with a stock tune would put down around 280hp. As you can see, we have a pretty big dip in the power band between 4400rpm and 5300rpm that we believe is all due to the current exhaust design that merges the exhaust too soon. I will be redoing the exhaust to push the merge back farther to hopefully eliminate this dip.
