Australia, you have been one hell of a ride and the trip of a lifetime. I didn’t think I could feel so much at home in a place so far away from home. Thank you for your kindness, your wilderness, and your beauty. I am forever in love with you. Until next time. 🫶🏻🇦🇺🤙🏻

It’s hard to put into words the emotions I felt today whilst we were driving down the Great Ocean Road: miles and miles of wild coast with golden sand, endless skies, and the bluest water. We stopped for a dip in the Pacific Ocean (hands down a highlight of my life so far) and a walk along Kennett River (we even managed to see a koala!). I guess this is what sublime feels like 🩵

Marcellus's Theater was the Colosseum 1.0, the original Roman amphitheater! 🇮🇹 The Colosseum may have been the biggest, but the Theater of Marcellus was there first and it served as the model for the later, more famous arena. It was started by Julius Caesar in 27 BC, but finished under the reign of Augustus Caesar in AD 14, who dedicated the theater in the name of his nephew and one-time heir Marcellus, who had funded the theater's construction for a time until he became ill and died in 23 BC at the age of 19. The Theater of Marcello is only open upon request at certain times of year, but you can freely explore its surrounding area, which is always a fair alternative if you don't manage to get tickets to the Colosseum! 😉

👉🏻 DO YOU KNOW THESE CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT ALTARE DELLA PATRIA IN #ROME? 🇮🇹 1⃣ Roman people have been given the Altar of the Fatherland many funny nicknames. The monument is also known as: the “typewriter” for its peculiar shape and the “wedding cake”. 🎂 2⃣ It’s absolutely forbidden to sit on the steps. 🙅🏻‍♀️ 3⃣ The equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II is so huge that in 1911 the Italian authorities organised a memorable refreshment with sandwiches and wine. 24 people were seated around the table inside the horse statue, including some public figures. 🐴 4⃣ The Altar of the Fatherland is presided 24/7 by the Italian guards. The two guards on both side of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier cannot look at each other. 👀

Did you know Rome is home to over 900 beautiful churches? In Italy, these sacred places are considered works of art. If you love visiting museums or experiencing culture during your travels, then you should sneak a couple of visits. I didn't have any specific itinerary in mind, just curiously went inside the churches that happened to be on my way, and let me tell you, I enjoyed every single one of them! 🤩 Churches in Rome are free to visit, as they are places of worship. Some churches even house famous works of art by Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Bernini. Don't miss out on the opportunity to visit these gems! 😊

Why is the #Colosseum broken and partly destroyed? 🤔 👉🏻 With the end of the glorious Roman imperial age, people decided to give a new life to this monumental landmark. That’s the reason why the Colosseum was initially abandoned and then used as a grave during the Middle Ages. 😲 Throughout these years, Roman citizens began using its marble to build new constructions all around the city. People were allowed to go in and out from this landmark with large amounts of marble. That’s why, even before the events that led to the actual break, the Colosseum already appeared mutilated. 👉🏻 In 1349, Rome was profoundly devastated by a tragic earthquake and, sadly, the Colosseum was seriously harmed. All its south side collapsed, and the Flavian Amphitheatre assumed its “characteristic” look that we can still admire today. Nobody thought about a possible reconstruction immediately after and some restoration was only started centuries after this catastrophe. 👉🏻Finally, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the amphitheater was robbed by people, so many materials and decorative marble structures, such as statues disappeared. Ever since, the Colosseum has undergone some restoration and is a well protected landmark of the city! 🇮🇹

Not to be missed in Rome - the Piazza Navona! 😍 Piazza Navona is one of the largest and most beautiful piazza squares in Rome with three impressive fountains, including la Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi with its large obelisk at the centre. Although paved over during the 15th century to form what we experience today, the rounded shape of the piazza comes from its foundations on top of an old stadium dating back to the first century, the Stadium of Domitian.  Emperor Domitian had the stadium built in 86AD, hosting around 30,000 spectators for athletic games. Its name, Navona, meaning ‘big ship’, refers to the flooding of the area and the mock naval battles once held there. It was even, for a short while, used to stage gladiatorial contests.  And during the Renaissance period, the square was flooded on weekends to provide a cooling-off spot for Romans trying to escape the scorching summer heat. Nowadays it exists mainly as a pleasure-seeking spot for tourists, surrounded by restaurants, bars and gelaterias, ideally located for people-watching locals and foreigners or just to sample a taste of la bella vita. 🇮🇹 💕

Once the centre of public and political life in Ancient Rome, the Roman Forum is now the most impressive archaeological site in the Eternal City, attracting more than 4.5 million visitors every year. Located close to the Colosseum and Palatine Hill in the historic centre of Rome, the Forum is a sprawling labyrinth of ancient ruins, including the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Titus and the House of the Vestals. 🇮🇹

Spanish or French steps? 🤔 If you've ever been to Rome, you must have visited the 138 Spanish steps, one of the most emblematic spots in the city! But have you ever wondered why are they called this way? The church located at the top of the Spanish Steps is called Trinita di Monti. During the 18th century, this church was under the patronage of the Kings of France, and the stairs which led up to them ‘La Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti’ were funded by the patronage of a French diplomat. Originally there was nothing Spanish about the steps; they might as well have been the French Steps! 🇫🇷 So why are they called the Spanish Steps? The Spanish Steps get their name from the square at their base, which is called the Spanish square, or “Piazza di Spagna.” This square has been home to the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See (Vatican) since 1647. When Trinita dei Monti ended its patronage to the Kings of France the sneaky Spaniards saw the opportunity to name the steps after the square below rather than the church atop! 🇪🇸 🤭 Either way, whether Spanish or French, make sure to climb them and be rewarded with one of the prettiest panoramas of Rome! 😁🇮🇹
