For all you aspiring #enginebuilders ... These images show how NOT to install an intake manifold (well...gaskets, really). This is what happens when you think you can #nailitthefirsttime and choose not to use #guidestuds . Guess what? He #didntnailit . So, instead of pulling the manifold and starting over, he slid it around and around until it lined up. As you can see, the gaskets were compromised. Additionally, don't use the #cork end pieces...just use a #liberalbead of #rtv sealant. Finally, add a light coat of RTV on each of the four #waterjackets (Small Block Ford) and on #bothsides of the gaskets around the waterjackets. You do not need to put RTV around any of the other ports. In the case of this failure, antifreeze bypassed and entered the #1 cylinder. When the engine was running (rough, of course), it actually seeped around the plug threads and dripped down the block! Either purchase actual guidestuds, or make your own by turning or cutting the heads off of 6 hex bolts. Then, take a #cutoffwheel and cut a slot in the top of the stud...in case you snug it up too much and need to use a screwdriver to remove it. Then, line the manifold up over all six studs (yeah...I said it) and slide it into position (said that, too). The guidestuds will force the manifold to seat perfectly... #firstimeeverytime . I also recommend #chasingthethreads with a #flatbottomtap or #threadchaser . Install manifold bolts in remaining six holes finger tight (there I go again). Then, you can remove the guidestuds and install the final six bolts. Follow the #recommended #torquesequence and torque in three stages. Torque at final spec twice. For best results, let your work cure for at least 12 hours before introducing new fluids and temp cycles.
