On Wednesday, the SJR Mixed Touch Rugby squad headed to Six Ways Stadium in Worcester to take part in the RFU Touch to Twickenham Finals, after winning the North West Regional competition earlier in the year. It was a great performance from the SJR team, with every game being a real battle, with very close score lines. Unfortunately, the results were not in our favour but we are so proud of how hard everyone worked. Our players of the tournament were awarded to James and Courtney. Our Under-14 girls rugby team took part in a regional tournament on Tuesday 30 April as part of the RFU's Touch to Twickenham programme. The event is the first stage on the road to the national rugby stadium for aspiring rugby stars, with the eventual winners getting to play at the home of @englandrugby during the Autumn International fixtures. Touch to Twickenham 🏉 Some of our year 8 & 9 students took part in the Kent round of the Touch to Twickenham tournament today. An excellent opportunity for the students to experience touch rugby. Well done to our students for working extremely hard and supporting each other. We also had 5 students supporting the event as referees. These students did a fantastic job officiating all matches during the day. Year 9 student Eriife reports on the day: I loved it!! We started off with a practice led by our leaders, and I was nervous about how the matches were going to be. The first match I was subbed off, I watched the game and then I was put on. I got an idea of what to do whilst watching and at the end of the match I was so shocked at how much I understood about the game. I knew when to run forward and when to stop and pass. I really liked doing lines for my team and just charging forwards. I also enjoyed meeting new people and learning how to actually play touch rugby. We also got to speak to and meet Shaunagh Brown which was an AMAZING and a really nice experience. This was my first time actually playing rugby and for us to have won not one, but two matches and drawing one is amazing!! I think that I really played my part and I have DEFINITELY learnt something new - like how to score a try properly 😁. A very big thanks to Justine and our sports leaders for putting up with us throughout today and encouraging us throughout. I had so much fun! 🏉 On Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting one of twelve RFU 'Touch to Twickenham' events taking place nationwide. Schools from across the Midlands came together for a day of rugby, promoting non-contact participation with 7-a-side, mixed gender teams made up of pupils in Year 9. Over 140 pupils joined us on the day, and we were thrilled to see that nearly 50% of them were female. Even more exciting was the fact that two-thirds of pupils were brand new to the sport. Congratulations to @stamford_schools_sport and @sharnbrook.pe who progress to finals day at Sixways Worcester on 22nd June.
