I love getting to know the homes I sell, and while I can walk around, measure, and take notes and photos, I really don’t know a home until my customers open up about the lives they’ve lived in their homes. And I don’t want to know the obvious things like a massive primary closet or top-of-the-line kitchen appliances. I mean the small, personal details. Things like the way the sun streams in during the morning or the cozy chair by the fireplace where your toddler likes to curl up with a book or the thriving herb garden you’ve been nurturing for years on the back patio. Those, my friends, are the details that make your home truly special. So before you sell your home, ask yourself: What makes my home stand out? What do I love here that I know I won’t find anywhere else? Then, take a deep breath, give thanks for the home you have, and pass those things along to your agent, so they can use what you love to appeal to buyers. I love getting to know the homes I sell, and while I can walk around, measure, and take notes and photos, I really don’t know a home until my customers open up about the lives they've lived in their homes. I’m currently working on a large statement piece for my “Shackelford Shadows” series. It’s 5 ft by 8 ft. I recently spent some time photographing the winter landscape, old Fort Griffin and the Clearfork of the Brazos River, preparing to launch this new series. I’m planning a show in Albany during Fandangle and thinking “Shackelford Shadows” will be what I call the show as well. The painting inspiration——As you approach Albany from Abilene, just West of town, you top a windswept hill before you descend into this legendary little town. At the very top of the hill, on the right is a fairly non descript roadside park picnic area with the most interesting, juniper trees. I have always been fascinated by the way nature has designed those soulful, trees, bent by time and the relentless wind atop that gusty knoll. Old Rayner Courthouse, the original county seat of Stonewall County, Texas—abandoned nearly 125 years ago. I had title research to do today in Stonewall County, so off I went in the Bronco. It’s an historic county with lots of stories…. It was partitioned off from part of Jones County in 1889, and W. E. Rayner platted a small town in Eastern Stonewall County that same year named Rayner. (W. E. Rayner, by the way, later moved on West and helped establish a town, now known as Lubbock). The Courthouse was built in Rayner within a couple of years but a lot of folks weren’t happy with the location and felt Aspermont would have been better because it’s more centrally located. Soon the railroad was built through Aspermont and not through Rayner. In 1900, an election was held to relocate the county seat to Aspermont. The votes to move the county seat were overwhelmingly unanimous and within only about ten years this grand, stone courthouse was abandoned and the town quickly disappeared. For almost 125 years, the solitary old Rayner Courthouse has stood on a hill, engulfed in Mesquite pastures, about 7 miles East of Aspermont, on Hwy 380. Every time I pass it, I have to stop and take some pictures. Years ago when I first discovered it, you could drive up to it, but the gate down by the highway has been locked for years and I can no longer get very close. I took this photo this morning and have drastically, digitally modified it. There’s not room here to tell more of its history but its past includes stories of family feuds, disputes of ownership and oil royalties and as I recall T. Boone Pickens ended up in the mix. Chasing Shadows—Day #2 I took the Bronco to historic Shackelford County today on Day #2 of my shadow chasing for inspiration for paintings. I do believe that Shackelford County and specifically, Albany, it’s county seat, is undoubtedly the most unique small town in Texas. It’s an historic place where nearby Fort Griffin was established right after the Civil War to help protect the encroaching white families from the native Comanches. Fort Griffin was rough and rowdy and hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and Belle Star during its 1870s heyday. After Fort Griffin’s demise and the surrender of the Comanches to the Fort Sill Reservation in Oklahoma, Shackelford County became a virtual “Land of Canaan, flowing with milk and honey”…..and Texas Tea…Oil, that is. Ranching, Oil, Cattle and Wind Turbines have been legendary in these parts, but along with it has come philanthropy that knows no boundaries. Perhaps you have heard of Cooks Children’s Hospital, the largest children’s hospital in the Southwest. Did you know that hospital’s namesake benefactor ranch is located in Shackelford County? Or did you know that on another ranch, every year private planes (on a private prairie landing strip) arrive carrying Illuminati from all over the world to play Polo…on the Prairie to raise untold millions for MD Anderson Cancer Center? “Polo on the Prairie”. Truly amazing…. Albany, by the way, has a population of less than 2,000 people…. “Chasing Shadows” Out in the Bronco this cold, drizzly morning chasing shadows! I’m adventureing in the historic Buffalo Gap area and the rich history and stories of American Bison being chased by the Comanches through the gap between the mesas of the Callahan Divide add a theatrical mood to my trek. Now I just hate cold weather. But I’m no fool and I “knoweth from whence my inspiration cometh”. Cloudy, wet mornings like this are rich for photographing the winter West Texas Landscape. The drenched bark of the trees make them blacker and the shadows are deeper and they give up their secrets on mornings like this. The trees are more monolithic and the massing forms are clearer and more abstract in shape and the subtle variations of color of the grasses and flora are richer and more saturated because of the rain. The mostly dry creek beds reveal interesting shapes and deep dark space and the rare remnants of water puddles reflect a sapphire sky. I am blessed…and inspired.
