From my garden: 3x trugs full; the remainder of our circa 2022 potato harvest, mostly heritage varieties, several different types, colours and sizes, starting as seed potatoes from @mathesonandroberts a lovely local nursery at the @otagofarmersmarket . We've been digging them up, with the vintage garden fork shown, as we wanted to eat them since Christmas Day but it's getting more autumnal now so harvest time it is for all of the remaining ones. In my garden: where autumn means bulb planting time. This is my smallest trug (made by Bill Blair, Oamaru, NZ), 1/2 full of beautiful, wonky shaped, super healthy, homegrown bulbs, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, or, Bluebells, "true Bluebells" and not the more commonly found Spanish interlopers. Some people may remember my spring post of my first flowering of these bulbs, and what a proud moment that was...this time I am beginning to empty my pots and retrieve the beautiful bulbs for planting into their permanent positions in my garden. I grew these from seed bought several years ago now from Eddie of the Isle of Eigg who has a special licence from the Scottish Government to harvest the protected seeds. I have grown these seeds on, sometimes ignoring for many months, just leaving them to their own devices. From my garden: homegrown potatoes; several different varieties, sizes and colours, but all delicious! Wow, how clever is my husband and this isn't all of them. At least we have plenty to eat for sometime to come, something particularly useful right now. We don't have a "proper" vege garden yet, that's on the "to do list", (along with many other things) but we tried it last year and were encouraged enough to try more this past summer, buying the seed potatoes back in spring from @nzbulbs and gosh hasn't it been successful. The vintage garden fork, one we picked up for display initially, has worked a treat digging them up with very little damage. They taste like nothing bought from the supermarket so we're definitely going to try again. From my garden: Sweet Peas, 8x different heritage varieties, all beautiful, all highly scented, and spilling out of my trug. I filled 4x vases; 1x for outdoors, at the entrance to our garden; 2x for indoors in hand made and decorated English pottery (@bell_pottery ); and 1x in a vintage glass preserving jar, that I gifted to a friend we visited this afternoon for a lovely outdoor spiritual service in her garden. Today was my darling Dad's birthday, and I thought of him as I picked these flowers this morning. And tomorrow is my 35th wedding anniversary (where did those years go! ), and I thank God that like my mum and dad I've been blessed with a very contented and loving marriage. In my garden: on a gorgeous mid summer's afternoon, taking time out from chores to enjoy a cup of tea, and a quick look through my newly arrived garden book, 'At West Dean', by Jim Buckland and Sarah Wain. I visited this beautiful English garden for the first time in the summer of 2015, and am planning on a return visit during spring next year. When I saw it featured as a newly released book I was smitten. I used to be quite a big reader; of different fiction, belonged to a book club, but gradually my tastes radically changed. I can't remember the last time I read fiction, it's all garden related books or magazines now! And there's just never enough time to read them all! In my garden: getting ready to plant lots of beautiful tulips, with my little furry friends as always close by! Today is the 3rd anniversary of the death of my darling Dad. On the day he died I had tulips to plant before heading to Australia for his funeral. It gave me such joy and comfort when months later Dad's tulips bloomed! So each year on his anniversary I plant tulips, and this year I'm putting them on our 2 outside beds, between our boundary and the footpath. This way everyone passing can easily enjoy them as well as ourselves. With each one I planted I thought of all the beautiful gardens my parents created and the joy it gave to them and many others. I now get so much pleasure from my garden and in turn hope to make our corner of the world a more beautiful place for all to enjoy. My darling Dad would have been very supportive I'm sure.
