The bluebells are showing off in my garden at the moment. Mine are the Spanish variety and self-seed every year. The Latin name - albeit for the English variety - Hyacinthoides non-scripta was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 work Species Plantarum, as a species in the genus Hyacinthus. The use of the phrase ‘non-scripta’ means “unlettered” or “unmarked” and was intended to distinguish this plant from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. That mythical mythical flower, which was almost certainly not the modern hyacinth, sprang up from the blood of the dying prince Hyacinthus. His lover, the god Apollo, shed tears that marked the new flower’s petals with the letters “AIAI” (“alas”) as a sign of his grief. I encountered these Sweet William dianthus (Dianthus barbatus) at a garden center and their clove-nutmeg fragrance enticed me so much I took a pot home to enjoy. This dianthus is closely related to the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus), and it comes in so many different colors, variants, cultivars, even scent variations. There are two thoughts on the origin of the sweet William name. The first is that it was named after the Duke of Cumberland, William Augustus. The second is that the name came from the writings of Thomas Tusser, an English poet. It has inspired me to consider having an old-fashioned cottage garden one day. Billede 2 er set fra 1 sal som giver flot udsigt til haven. Tulipanerne stråler med skønne farver rundt omkring i haven. Stauderne vokser gevaldigt frem og der er nye i blomst næsten hvert sekund. Man tør næsten ikke blinke, i frygt af at se hver enkel blomst. Vi er begyndt at plante stauder rundt om det nye bed med det Japanske søjle kirsebærtræ i midten, vi er slet ikke færdige. Men det bliver så godt. Good morning. First photo snapdragons I planted out about 10 days ago (second photo snapdragons last summer) I sowed the tiny seeds last October, they slowly grow over the winter and spring months. When they’re tall enough I pinch out the growing tip to create bushier, multi stemmed plants. I plant them close together to try and encourage them to grow tall (fighting for light) and to help prop each other up, although they’ll still need some plant supports. Weiße Narzissen bringen ganz andere Töne in's Frühlingskonzert ein als ihre gelben Schwestern, die eher auffällig daherkommen. . Diese zarten Töne können dezent, natürlich, romantisch ja sogar elegant wirken. . Diese Vielseitigkeit macht sie so super kombinierbar! Ich mag sie z.B. zusammen mit pastellfarbenen Tulpen oder wie auf dem ersten Bild, mit blauen und weißen Vergissmeinnicht. . 💜🩷💜🩷💜 Remembering ….. The beautiful ‘Lauren’s Grape’ poppy! This is a show stopping, annual, opium poppy, with rich purple plum petals and the bees love it just as much as I do. 🐝 These poppies resent root disturbance, which I found out the first time I tried growing them from seed a few years ago. I sowed them in seed trays and lost most of them when pricking them out. So this year I’m going to grow some in coir pots as well as direct sowing some to see what happens. The ones in coir pots will be able to go straight into the soil which should make it that bit easier and hopefully more successful. I’ve been holding off for a couple of weeks now to let it warm up a bit, but I’ve decided that today is the day or it will be too late. I just need to find some space in my greenhouse, which is jam packed at the moment, but the kitchen windowsill will do just fine otherwise. They’re great self seeders too, so if I have left it too late, I’m sure I’ll have some seedlings appear from last year’s beauties. 🤍 White Narcissus 🤍 These striking white Narcissus that I had in my garden last spring really do add that wow factor to your spring displays. This is Narcissus Night Cap, its central cup/trumpet is a soft cream that has frilly edges that are coral with white outer petals. This pretty perennial spring flower will grow pretty much anywhere whether that be in full sun, partial shade or dappled light and will tolerate any soil/compost as long as its free draining, I always mix in some grit or gravel into my compost to help with drainage and to stop the bulbs from rotting. We all know just how much of a problem it can be stopping squirrels rats or mice from digging up our bulbs and leaving a mess everywhere, well these lovely flowers are actually resistant to them so after all our hard work you do t have to worry about anything digging them up. They’re a low maintenance plant that don’t need much care or attention. Narcissus Night cap are highly fragrant and make excellent cut flowers with a long vase life. When cutting these flowers it’s best to cut them just before they open up to ensure you get the best from them. Narcissus are great for early pollinators & pollinating insects as the flowers are high in pollen & nectar. Although they’re smaller than other narcissus or daffodils they certainly pack a punch. The best thing about these flowers is that they’re perennial so you’ll be able to enjoy them year on year and you can plant them in any type of garden such as cottage gardens, lawns, rockery’s boarders or meadows. 🌸🍃🌸 🇬🇧 26 April, 2024 compared to 26 May, 2023. The new white clematis Montana is in full bloom now and is growing around the corner of the potting shed. It looks so lovely. That clematis (and all my other clematis Montana) are flowering about a month earlier compared to last year (second picture).
