When a duck and a goose... We shall see what comes of it! Hopefully our African Goose will lay some more eggs and go broody. This season has been extremely wired for the geese. Our Sebastopols laid early but the ganders weren't ready, we collected some eggs and were able to hatch 4 African goslings and 2 Embdens, and from our cotton patch geese we have 2 goslings so far. Cutest thing that happened to us in a long time, two baby goats just came running up to us and wanted to be pet. Our neighbor told us he had some bottle babies, for the first time in 10 or so years. On our walk we hear cute little bleaks running towards us. And it was the bottle babies that wanted to be pet and snuggled. Never a dull moment on the farm, mom kept hearing a goat, Every time we listened for it it was quiet, till just before noon, it sounded miserable. So we went to find the goat, and sure enough in the back corner of the property by the water break it got its head stuck in the cattle panel. The mobile greenhouse moved into the barn yesterday in the anticipation of upcoming tornadoes over night. Thankfully the weather decided to relax and not tear Oklahoma apart. I was feet defeated today, despite the fact that I managed to create breeding pens for the Saxony ducks and the Golden Welsh Harlequin ducks, I felt like a farm failure. We have been raising these birds for almost 5 years now, granted each year we added some, and last year all the pens got destroyed because of the barn rebuild, however we just never got to finish any of the new pens so far. The farm feels like a disaster of projects. Too many to figure out which ones to finish, and when we do have time the weather decides to not cooperate. I truly had to take a moment today and step back and reflect on the life that happened these past 12 months,.. There was so much loss, There was so much heart break, So much shuffling and just stopping the farm stuff to take care of personal stuff. Facebook and Instagram never show you the real life that happens behind the scenes, you only get to see the snapshots and reels we decided to share. And after I took a deep breath and let all the things we been through these last 12 months sit with me for a while I looked around and realized that even though we don't have beautiful coops like Joanna Gains, we didn't loose a single bird to the cold, only one goose to the heat, well she liked to bake in the sun. We sold all the extra birds we raised out thanks to our amazing farm friends in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas, yes people drove from that far to get birds and eggs from us. Filled our freezer with over 60 lbs of duck meat, have been eating our own duck and goose eggs, learned how to ferment and lacto ferment, learned how to infuse oils, honey and vinegar. And started our own product line all while starting to build inground coops and our massive underground chicken coop/ greenhouse. We finally thanks to the amazing Welsh Harlequin community added to Golden Drake's to our farm and will be hatching golden Welsh Harleyquin ducklings for the first time after 4 years of trying to hatch a drake. We expanded our goose breeds and added Pilgrim, Africans and Cotton Patch Geese to our farm and officially accepted the title of Rare Breed Poultry Farm. So thank you all for your support, it means everything!

Good afternoon Friday 3 of this arctic weather here in Oklahoma. The Barn with the lights stayed at 31F near the well, so the blankets and wrapping with the lights definitely did the job of the pipes not freezing. The garage dropped down to 28F last night, but the chicks didn't mind. We were surprised that our LGDs wanted to spend time in the Garage last night so we let them in and get some rest, being that the outside temps felt like -13F with the wind chill. The HVAC system thankfully seems to be fixed and working. Due to the cold temps we already used 20percebt of it but are just glad that everyone gets to stay warm. Getting ready for another day and night of fridgid cold temps. ... Farming and raising poultry isn't always pretty. Today we continued getting ready for the upcoming freeze. Earlier last year a neighbor gave us old tires from his shop to use as retaining walls for the underground coop areas, as life would have it, we haven't gotten to the part where we are able to stack them. So we took the pile and built draft walls for the main coop area and spread out the other bigger tires as individual shelters. If we had to purchase wood or even tarps (birds really don't like the sound of plastic in the wind) we would have had to spend several hundred dollars and having to figure out how to keep the wood sheets from falling over during wind. Wood rots. Whereas the black of the tires will attract the warmth from the sun and give of some stored heat into the evening hours. Best part, free already on the property materials we are able to use to ride out this storm. Today was day two of digging in the chicken coop. It was super cold on the tractor so I had to bundle up and made my self some hot tea. Overall I managed to dig down about 3 ft today and spread the dirt over the back patio area. After 5 years of rain and 3 years of ducks and dogs there were plenty of holes to fill and creat a better run off from the house. Hopefully the wind stops tomorrow. My face feels sunburned which I think is more like wind burned. It's super exciting to see the physical changes of the property. Today we finally broke ground on our underground chicken coop. This has been a long time in the planning and being that we need fill next to the new barn and near the goose coops it was perfect timing to start digging where hopefully soon the chickens will move to. Obviously nothing ever goes as planned and bout 2 ft deep I hit a plastic pipe. Unsure if it was electrical or water I waited for our neighbor to stop by to take a look and we investigated together. Thankfully it was just an old water supply line that's inactive. Tomorrow we shall continue to dig the chicken coop and fill the property. Good morning from a very foggy Secret Garden Farms. This was quite the surprise, walking out and into the mist... May this be a beautiful relaxing weekend for everyone as us homesteaders and farmers continue to, feed, fix fences, build coops, tend to animal and tucker along.... Now don't get me wrong, we definitely take our time off too, it's just not like a regular job that gives you Saturdays and Sundays off. Here on the Farm we have to take weather conditions into consideration, especially around this time of year, and if it's sunshiny on Saturday and Sunday but raining on Monday we work the weekend. Tending to the animals never stops, you can't take a day off unless you have a great helper or some familiar with your life stock that's willing to look after them in your absence. Farm life is a choice, and as much as I would like to say it choose us, we had plenty opportunity to not continue down this path, however, raising what we eat, learning sustainable and self sufficient ways and being mindful of what we put into our bodies is part of this journey. It is our calling, the purpose on life we have been looking for, and though it is hard work the reward is raising happy birds that truly love their best lives here, and building on this start by growing more of our own produce and herbs. By the time the sun set over Secret Garden Farms yesterday I had a lot to be greatful for on this Veterans day, especially my son being still alive and well after a tire blow out. Yesterday was one of those days where it was on thing after another till 7 pm. I went outside to watch the sunset and praised all the positive elements in this world for the blessings I have received and the ones I am yet to be aware of. After loosing a dear friend and fellow Veteran, we took a walk on the property and discovered some mushrooms, for the first time I found an edible puffer mushroom. Usually by the time I find them they are just spores. We created a Mexican Jalapeno Chimichurri that went excellent with the Black Angus steak. We created more recipes of seasoning and brine mixes that are going to be offered here on the homestead and just when we tried to continue to build some huts my son called that he had a tire blowout. My heart dropped, I was so greatful he was save and maintained control over the car despite his inexperience. Thankfully we purchased from Discount tire and will get a replacement, however they were closing at 5 and there was no way we were going to make it there in time. Their employee Arron was a rockstar and helped me over the phone to get a spare tire ready and waited for them after closing so we at least didn't need to tow the car. Once everyone was home safe we had dinner together. Having the family around the table is a blessing. This year so much went wrong, but there are still blessings. We have been processing our own meat for the past two days, and it's been exhausting fighting the wind, and working through 29 birds. Every year I consider not raising our so many, so cull season would be easier. And throughout the year I am greatful to be able to eat our own fresh meat that we raised here and connected with. When you buy meat in the store you rarely think about the sacrifice the animal makes to feed you and your family. It's easy to throw leftovers in the trash. You don't think about the kind of life the animal had, and how scared it was in transport. You don't consider the efficient yet somewhat inhumane way these animals are slaughtered, because all you see is a nice steak or fried chicken breast infront of you. Up until 3 years ago we were the same. Though financially I could never really afford to just throw food in the trash, I never even considered the quality of life battery hens have. We are so far removed from our own food supply that we as a society forgot how to value life in general. Never in a million years would I have dreamt about homesteading or farming. I loathed growing up in a village and all I wanted was to live in a big city. Which I did for close to 16 years. Today was Salad day! It felt so good to make my own salads with my own dressings again. The first salad I want to call a blessings salad. Thanks to our Senior citizen Center, I was able to make this salad today and it was fabulous. I didn't know what I was going to make for lunch or dinner today and having these wonderful ingredients it was a no brainer. Dinner was a muscovy duck taco salad without the tortilla shell. Fresh farm tomatoes, basil and pumpkins... Just absolutely love farm grown vegetables. I am so thankful for places such as Happy Hearts Homestead that brings locally organic grown produce to the communities and for neighbors that fight these extreme Oklahoma temperatures to still grow delicious fresh produce for themselves and to share. Next week is the week. We will break ground on our first underground structure. It will be our new chicken coop as a test run, and a great learning opportunity. It will show us what's really in the ground, how strong our tractor is and we will learn how to waterproof and secure the chickens. Omg Comet was such a Ham and I just love our kitties in the background looking at us like ughh this one again. Comet had to move a month ago on the other side of the fence. At first we were looking for a new home for her, but after talking to the neighbor we decided to give her a try with the goats and to protect the property from the back acreage.
