How do I know who lays which eggs? I get this question often, especially with eggs like these two, that are very similar. These two eggs are from my silkies, which is why they’re so similar (same breed). Lucy, lays a slightly pink eggs (on the right), and Ethel lays eggs with faint speckles (on the left). So, how do I know who lays which? Well, I’ve seen them lay in action🫣😆. If I remember correctly, I caught them on camera, not in person, but that’s how I know which girl lays which egg. Of course, for different breeds, it’s a lot easier. An olive egger will lay green eggs, a maran will lay darker eggs, etc., but I love their pretty eggs so much that my brain has a special storage folder to memorize who lays what. Maybe I’ll add the skill to my resume in case I ever need it 😉 Do you know which chicken lays each egg in your flock? Churning ghee at home and using very judicious amounts of it in curries, instead of just throwing in slabs of white butter, can be such a paradigm shift in the whole philosophy of the particular food item. 2. Knowing the exact pressure points in a curry is also very crucial, because it’s that knowledge which helps save a on energy and resources. For instance, activated Charcoal in a tikka masala is the truest soul of the gravy. So take a tour in Nature & stack up on some pitch black jagged wedges during the prep stage and don’t get caught up in the deception of colours, butters and cashews. Because the latter are absolutely redundant. 3. Adding finishing polish with bits of Nature can be drama for the eyes of the eaters and , hence, happens to be a game-changer…because who doesn’t like the picture of Dorian Gray!! . Moreover Life is partial and does take sides. What is "cranchy"? When Ian and I started talking about our family and our values we realized there wasn't a "term" for our envisioned lifestyle. We wanted to be crunchier, like using essential oils but not spending $1000 dollars on 'clean food' every month. You know what I mean. But we also realized that we are a little punchy. Like having a couple chickens and horses but not checking on cows with a dip in punchy. Then Ian said "Babe, we're CRANCHY!" We have found that there are a lot of other people like us out there and that social media has been so polarizing between crunchy and punchy. My first incubation and hatching! 24 eggs went into my still air incubator. I hand turned for the first week, decided it was too time-consuming and bought an automatic turner for the rest of the incubation period. I dry hatched until I saw the first pip on day 21, then I added a few damp paper towels to the perimeter. The first chick hatched late that night, followed by 5 more overnight. Day 22 brought 7 more chicks and one final chick on day 23. 14 chicks hatched and are now in my brooder! This was a great learning experience! (Swipe ➡️ to see my roosters!) Right now I have three broody hens sitting on eggs in the coop so I may have a few more chicks in the next week or so.
