Winter is coming (SWIPE) 😱! 2 degrees C 🌡out there this morning, time to prepare the summer plants for over wintering. First up my lemongrass, a good haircut and harvest and moved into the conservatory. Lovely fat stalks are ready for some paste making and plenty left to harvest in the winter months. Harvested stalks also grow back and even the end parts of the ones, I just harvested can be used for growing new stalks. This plant is a bit over two years old, there is also a picture of the one I started this year. It will be just as nice and large as the older one, next year. It is so easy to grow lemongrass and so nice to cook with fresh stalks, just harvested. It’s Lemongrass harvest day, I need 5 stalks for the next paste I am making! (SWIPE) 😊 I am now able to harvest thumb thick stalks from my own plants, something you can’t buy in any store around here. I love lemongrass and it also is time to repot my 3 year old plant/s, so many stalks squeezed in a small pot for so long made it very root bound, the last third of the pot was a solid root ball, there was absolutely NO soil left in the bottom of the pot. I grow in pots because in the UK the plants have to be taken inside in the winter. I grow new lemongrass from the bottom bit of the bought and home-grown harvested stalks which I cut off and root in water then plant. I tried growing from seed but the stalks are still tiny after nearly 3 years, there is no point. This is the quick version. I love growing Lemongrass; it is so easy and you will be rewarded with amazing fresh flavours. I have already cut the bottoms of todays harvest and stuck them into a small glass to root which will only take a couple of weeks but the water needs changing daily. As soon as the roots are about 3-4 cm long, the little stalk ends will be planted. These will be the next generation Lemongrass, going into the pot, the other plant came out of. After 1 year some of them will be ready to be harvested, others need a bit longer. Not all of them will grow but 95% of them will, give it a go!
