🥒 It’s the final zucchini! If you had told me back in November last year when I put these seedlings in that I’d get this much zucchini off three plants, I’d would have laughed in your face. If you’ve seen me between November and March, there’s a good chance I’ve handed you a zucchini straight from the garden or something made with zucchini in it! 🚨 We’ve had a bug hotel extension people!! I decided this was the evening to tackle the bug house that I’d partly taken down and left for months 🙃 I broke down one of the pallets we had to create a layer on top of the bricks, I need some straw and pine cones to fill that up, I then broke up a terracotta pot to add some curved details, I used the bamboo edging I bought ages ago, some kindling sticks, left over bricks and wood and rocks! The inside is an absolute mess of broken bricks, bamboo, rocks and rotten wood, but I’m sure the bugs won’t mind! 😂 I just need LOTS of pine cones to cover the top and I’ll be happy! I also de-grassed the wildflower bed, added a layer of compost and sprinkled in some new wildflower seeds, Installed a hedgehog house!! After seeing the footage from our plot neighbour I knew I just had to get a house! And installed the new cute little bird bath! You know when you buy something online and it comes miniature..? 😅 still cute though! Chanting secular prayers for my next experimental adventure in home farming: Clemson okra, birdhouse gourds, and currant tomatoes. All seeds started indoors under lights and heat mats on April 1. Space is getting limited inside, so I potted up the seedlings to the next size and put half outdoors in wee greenhouses to see if they can hack it. These cheap greenhouses have lasted far beyond my expectations, and they get pretty dang hot. I decided it was worth taking a risk. #illinoisgarden #kitchengarden #growfromseed
Siempre tenemos la duda de hasta cuando vamos a poder disfrutar del huerto okupa pero estas últimas semanas han sido de disfrutar atacando la última zona salvaje… 15 años mirando a ese rincón donde sabía que estaban los cascotes más grandes. A pico y pala rebajando el terreno para poder sacar todo lo posible (alguno se ha quedado enterrado 😂), cribar tierra para evitar restos plásticos, cable… Ahora ya tenemos 9 mts lineales más para aprovechar. En un extremo he puesto las aloe vera y unos melones. En el otro lado, de momento sandías y espinacas. Todo con alguna flor para asegurar diversidad. Queda el último empujón picando la zona donde deberían ir los bancales pero primero habrá que encontrar madera 😂 y de paso compruebo si se ve mucho desde la calle, que esta es la zona más expuesta. Enjoyed our time at Lottie this weekend, been productive and the plot is looking mighty fine. So from a planting pov we planted some lettuces, spring onions, beetroot and yes more peas. My asparagus failed this year and felt extremely lucky to find these 2 year old asparagus crowns at my local nursery. At £4 each felt they were a good purchase knowing that they have spears before I planted them. Also planted the main crop potatoes, 12, so that means we have 27 potatoes buckets, with 6 ocas still to put in pots. Put a couple of jute bean and pea nets on the two bamboo cane structures, which will have the alderman peas and borlotti beans growing up them #theylookcute General tidy up around the plot and a cheeky visit to a garden centre for some plants and compost. Juhu az első zöld paradicsom megjelenése, akkor örülés. 🕷️Küzdés a darázspókkal, sírás a darázspók miatt, mivel az nem elég, ha szépen megkérem, hogy távozzon… fizikailag is arrébb kell helyezni. Ekkor jön a “kérlek Pisti csinálj vele valamit” ✨kiskutyaszemekkelnézés✨ Írtam már, hogy locsolni is kell? 💧 Ba$$us vihar lesz, nem lesz bajuk?! 😱 Izgulás megint. Starting your own food garden can be overwhelming, there is so much information out there with tips, tricks and advice, that getting started can feel like you are about to tackle Mount Everest. But, I promise you it doesn't have to be so daunting. My biggest advice to someone starting out is to research where you live. Find out your growing zone, look at your first and last frost dates online and then build from there. Grow based on the plants that work best in your growing zone. If like me you live in a cold zone then lean into growing more cold hardy crops. Find a handful of crops that work for the environment you live in and research everything you can about the plant. Find out everything, from it's best growing conditions, to what pests and predators to look out for and how to get rid of them if you come up against them. Work with the environment you live in and growing will feel much less daunting. 04.28.24 I made Luay's @urbanfarmandkitchen roasted cherry tomato sauce last summer and froze it for later. I decided to use it last night as a marinara sauce, and it was so delicious! It's super easy to make and a great way to use cherry tomatoes from the garden. Luckily my Sun Golds were the star of my garden last season, so I had plenty to make this sauce. You can have the best greenhouse, the most amazing compost, the best, freshest seeds, and all the gardening gear, but the plants will still only grow at their own pace. You must have patience to succeed. 🔵 Resilience. Some plants won’t make it. They may get too wet, too dry, too much sun, not enough sun, too hot, too cold. They may get diseased or eaten or just angry and die to spite you. You cannot control it all. 🟢 Nurture each other. Tending to plants requires attention, care, and dedication, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy towards other living beings. If paying attention to a plant can help it grow and thrive, imagine what we could do if we cared for each other? 🟡 Connection with nature. It reminds us of our dependence on the earth for sustenance and the importance of preserving and respecting the environment. This week’s Garden Visit was to @fonthillestate for the Open Garden Day. . There is a good-sized kitchen garden with beautifully pruned apple trees. The espalier apples are gorgeous. . My favourite thing is the summer house by the pool. It is draped with wisteria and I imagine it will be glorious in June. . The weather was lovely and so was the time I spent in the plot today. The sugar snaps and the lettuces are coming along just fine. 🌱 Pricking out 🌱 After being away for two weeks there’s a ton of jobs to catch up with. Starting today with the pricking out of my Moby Dick Cauliflowers seedlings. Once seedlings get their first pair of true leaves they’re ready to leave their seed tray and move to individual pots with fresh compost and more room to grow. Soon these will start being put out for a few hours a day to harden off as it’s still too cold for them unprotected. My basil seedlings were very ready to transplant them to a larger growing pot, so that’s what I did today. I chose to plant four seedlings together in one pot. When the temperature outside is warm enough, I plant them outside in the garden also in clusters of four plants. I thought by then, this will safe some work and time.
