Hildewintera aureispina f. cristata/Borzicactus aureispinus f. cristatus/Cleistocactus winteri f. cristatus (whatever you want to call it, we’re all smart enough here to know what you’re on about). Couldn’t decide between this and a Strombocactus at @mint.plants stall at the #rhsurbanshow ultimately settled on this rescued from Harry’s collection when I realised I might not come across something so cool again. It’s a big lad, and really difficult to photograph. Hopefully I’ll get some flowers on it!

Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum stacker, grafted on (I think) pereskiopsis. Bought at #rhsurbanshow from @mint.plants who sell AMAZING rescued plants. All of my oddballs are from here and they’ve all got a fascinating history as they’ve previously been in other people’s collections. This one was part of Barry’s collection in Barnstaple. Euphorbia enermis bought spring 2024 from @growtropicals at the #rhsurbanshow Repotted spring 2024. Another weird and wonderful euphorbia to add to the collection. On a side note, I’ve got a thing for consistency, but have decided to change the format for my descriptions. Not that it makes any difference to anyone, but I’ve noticed that if it’s continuous like this, as opposed to dropping down lines, the algorithm seems to prefer it.

Euphorbia mammillaris ‘Variegata’ Bought spring 2024 from Deans plants on FB. Repotted spring 2024. Never really had this in my spotlight, but it’s such an amazingly weird plant. Looks quite stressed out so it’ll be interesting to see how it grows over time. Hopefully it doesn’t change too much, I quite like it looking like a PS2 alien graphic.

Agave Blue Brian which I understand was named after US nurseryman Brian Kemble. It’s an Agave parrasana x potatorum so a little less hardy than straight parrasana. Yesterday I planted out my Agave atrovirens. This is relatively rare in the U.K. and it seems to have a limit to its hardiness but it is a large growing agave that I’ve wanted to try outside for a while. I’ve planted it close to some palms as the overhanging leaves will take the edge of the frosts. One of the larger Agaves growing outdoors at RHS Wisley, I think this unlabelled plant could be Agave salmiana var crassispina which, unlike other types of salmiana, forms a tighter rosette of shorter leaves. It could potentially be something else altogether such as gentryi as crassispina is not that common. This one is in a stepped, dry bed overlooking the newly dug clear lake bordering the A3. Agave atrovirens var mirabilis in a 12 litre pot. Possibly going in the ground this spring but I have a few to choose from so it might stay on the pot for another year. Yep! I'm still genuinely surprised and fascinated by the little flowers on my African milk tree plant. I'm wondering if they only flower when they don't have any branches on them? My multi-branched plants have never flowered. I have 14 of them, but only the two branchless euphorbias have flowered (this one, and another has buds), both bought from @columbiaroad_plants in December.
