Yesterday was a beautiful day, 18 degrees and glorious sunshine!!!! It was well needed 🙌 The grass got a cut and everything got a good water as a lot of the pots were really dry despite all the rain ☔️ My Gran's rose 'simply the best' is now pride of place on the lawn, I will put my bird bath back out but i need to decide if i will use it more as a planter. It's officially seed saving season. I decided after this coriander started to bolt earlier in the season I would just leave it in place and let it do its thing. I did manage to get some good size harvests off it before the weather simply got to warm and it inevitably bolted. Not long until these are ready to harvest and I can save some seed for next year and dry and grind the rest to use throughout the cold months. Starting your own food garden can be overwhelming, there is so much information out there with tips, tricks and advice, that getting started can feel like you are about to tackle Mount Everest. But, I promise you it doesn't have to be so daunting. My biggest advice to someone starting out is to research where you live. Find out your growing zone, look at your first and last frost dates online and then build from there. Grow based on the plants that work best in your growing zone. If like me you live in a cold zone then lean into growing more cold hardy crops. Find a handful of crops that work for the environment you live in and research everything you can about the plant. Find out everything, from it's best growing conditions, to what pests and predators to look out for and how to get rid of them if you come up against them. Work with the environment you live in and growing will feel much less daunting. This afternoons surprisingly large harvest of potatoes and the very last harvest of broad beans...... Plus a wee visitor I found living among the potatoes...... 🐸 The best part about this potato harvest is I did absolutely nothing to encourage them to grow..... I basically popped some seed potatoes in a bag with a bit of compost... Then I left them in the corner and forgot about them!!! 🎶It's time to say goodbye🎶 Well, that's a bit dramatic...... I've finally cleared all of the remaining broad beans by cutting them down to soil level... Not everyone travels the same path when it comes to Homesteads. I most definitely do not.... my decisions are dictated by how much time and effort is required. Raising kids and animals, working, managing a homestead and household are incredibly time consuming and there are just somethings I can't subscribe to.... yet I would love to bake sourdough daily, but the rate my kids consume bread I'd need to start a production line and I'd never be out or a pinny. So it's store bought or machine loaf for us! Living in the north west UK doesn't make it possible to wash and line dry everything, plus I hate laundry at the best of times I'm sure I'd hate it even more if I had to hand wash and dry everything... including white school shirts... 😱 Cows milk and cows milk products are off the card in our house..... 3 out of 4 members of the family are highly allergic so... it's plant based milks and cheese all the way. If I grew everything on our property I would have to cover every single square inch of space with food..... I am however a massive fan in surplus food boxes and hugely discounted fresh produce..... it all gets processed and stored long term so for me it's a better option. Trends will come and trends will go! I have always marched to the beat of my own drum when it comes to my style, tastes and fashion sense..... I needed to do some repotting today, so I got myself out in the garden 😊 I needed my Ericaceous soil, which was at the bottom of a pile in the corner at the right-hand side of the green house (against the wall). I started moving bags out, and when I moved one of them, I saw the remnants of a nest. I very quickly backed out. I asked Chris to come have a look, and he said whatever it was, it was very small, something like a field mouse, and that it had left. For people who do not know me, I absolutely HATE rodents. It honestly took me an hour to pluck up the courage to actually move the rest of the bags, and that was even after getting the broomstick and bashing the bags around the nest 😅 The little buggar had chewed through one of my bags of soil to make said nest, too 🤦🏻♀️ I then decided I should probably tidy the greenhouse up.
