Today for the first time the Workplace Gender Equality Agency has released the gender pay gaps at private companies with more than 100 employees. Over 60% of Australian workplaces have a gender pay gap of more than 5% favouring men. The under representation of women in high paying roles, the chronic undervaluing of industries with higher female participation and women’s shouldering of the bulk of unpaid domestic work are all contributing factors in a gender pay gap that is 14.5% of the median base salary, equivalent to $11,542 per year. This important report serves as a reminder that the fight for gender equity is no where near finished. New figures released this week reveal that wage rises are finally outstripping inflation for the first time in nearly three years. ABS reports that this is mostly “driven by enterprise agreements and salary reviews in the last three months of 2023....Higher growth in the public sector was primarily due to newly implemented enterprise agreements for essential workers in the health care and social assistance and education and training industries following changes to state-based wages policies" The NSW trade union fought for and won the removal of the public sector wages cap in 2023. Solidarity with food delivery workers at Hungry Panda standing up against the company’s slashing of pay and rider conditions and refusal to back enforceable standards for the gig economy. Hungry Panda riders have reported a drop in the base delivery rate from $7 to $4 for motorcycle riders, and from $6 to $5 for bicycle riders. A bonus scheme was introduced to incentivise completing extra deliveries in a short timeframe, placing undue pressure on riders to take risks on the road for little extra pay. Furthermore, Hungry Panda’s injury insurance scheme is inadequate, with many riders forced to continue working while injured. We’re appalled to learn that one of the lead organisers of protest action against Hungry Panda has suddenly stopped receiving orders- so riders are not just underpaid, overworked, and unprotected, but if they speak up about it, they’re also unemployed. We stand with the TWU and Hungry Panda workers in calling for: 1. Hungry Panda to immediately restore pay rates 2. Hungry Panda to implement a fair and equal order distribution system for all riders 3. Hungry Panda to remove dangerous time limit constraints on orders 4. Hungry Panda to provide better insurance for all riders 5. Hungry Panda to stop over-hiring riders at unsustainable rates The above demands are essential to ensuring the safety of workers as well as the ongoing sustainability of Hungry Panda jobs. The right to protest is a foundational block to a vibrant democracy, one that has won us historic changes such as equal pay for women, marriage equality, Indigenous land rights, Medicare and so much more. We welcome yesterday’s NSW Supreme Court ruling that parts of the anti-protest laws in NSW is unconstitutional. This decision is the first step in removing laws that have a chilling effect on political communication via protests and public assemblies. Another win for workers! Today the Federal Government has passed crucial parts of the Closing Loopholes bill, including the closing of labour hire loopholes, the criminalisation of wage theft, and awarding important rights to workplace delegates. Today is a win for workers in their unions as we welcome the NSW Government’s scrapping of the public sector wages cap. The Parliament has also passed other important measures including allowing specialised judges to resolve workplace health and safety matters and underpayments. These legislative changes mark the beginning of the end of the crisis facing the NSW public workforce. Union Summer will run for three weeks from Monday the 29th of January to Friday the 16th of February 2024. Successful interns are placed with a designated trade union for three weeks and are provided with training and a diverse experience of what it is like to work for a union. Application link in bio! Important dates and other information: Applicants that are selected for the next stage of the application process will be requested to attend an interview to be held on either Tuesday the 28th of November or Wednesday the 29th of November. The program will run from Monday the 29th of January to Friday the 16th of February 2024 and includes two days of training provided by Unions NSW which will be held at Trades Hall. Successful applicants will be placed in a union and mentored by a union official. All participants will be paid the current minimum wage. The program is predominately based in Sydney with possible travel. Successful applicants should assume they will be working within metropolitan Sydney. Applications close at 5PM Monday the 20th of November.
