Black History Month 2024 - Day 28: XS Jenni Ognats was the daughter of Jeven Ognats and Dawn Allen (daughter of Barry Allen, the second Flash). Despite her ancestry, Jenni did not at first display any signs of super-speed. The Dominators, knowing her family heritage, captured her and forced her to watch her father being tortured, activating her latent super-speed powers. She managed to escape with her father. She later checked herself into a laboratory to help her learn to coordinate herself at super-speed. Once she learned control, she was drafted into the Legion of Super-Heroes as the speedster XS. During the Legion’s first trip to the 20th century, XS was separated from the team. She met her cousin Bart Allen (Impulse), and revealed how she was participating in an archeological dig in the future. XS fought side by side with Impulse and other speedsters during the events of Dead Heat. XS was one of the Legionnaires left behind after many of her teammates were lost. She traveled to Xanthu with her teammate Star Boy, where she found herself caught in a war between Xanthu and Robotica. While the two Legionnaires managed to save millions of lives by distracting Robotica long enough for the surviving Xanthians to escape off-planet, the two remained trapped there for months thereafter, until rescued by their returned teammates. Jenni can run at superhuman speeds and projects an aura that protects her from the extreme heat she puts off while running. She can vibrate at super-human speeds, allowing her to eventually phase through matter. As a Legionnaire, Jenni carries a flight ring and utility belt. The flight ring enables her to fly; the utility belt includes rations, a Legion transuit that acts as a space suit, telepathic ear plugs to communicate in space, and a mini-Omnicom for computing purposes. Black History Month 2024 - Day 27: Xenk Yendar Xenk Yendar was a human paladin and adventurer from Thay in the 15th century DR. Xenk grew up in the land of Thay, as a subject of the Zulkir of Necromancy, Szass Tam. Szass used the Horn of Beckoning Death to invoke a terrible red smoke that consumed their souls, thereby creating an army of undead under his control. All who tried to flee were slain or trapped within by the Red Wizards. In their fear, Xenk’s parents tried to force their son into the ritual, but he refused and ran away. Xenk evaded the Beckoning Death, but only barely. He lost a part of himself to the ritual and was left changed by the necromantic magic. By the late 1490s DR, Xenk was operating out of the village of Mornbryn’s Shield, where he was now working with the Harpers. Edgin Darvis, Holga Kilgore, Simon Aumar, and Doric arrived to ask Xenk Yendar about the fate of the helmet of disjunction. Edgin was scornful, but the others gained Xenk’s interest by speaking of their desire to rob and bring down the corrupt Lord Forge Fitzwilliam of Neverwinter and of his connection to a Red Wizard, Sofina. For his assistance in finding the helmet of disjunction, Xenk required that the thieves share any stolen riches with the Neverwintan people, to which Edgin very reluctantly agreed, swearing it on a Harper book at Xenk’s demand. The very image of the knight in shining armor, of the resolute paladin, Xenk embodied what it meant to be a heroic divine warrior against all the odds. He had sworn an Oath of Devotion to help the innocent and uphold justice and he had a reputation for kindliness, honor, and integrity.He endeavored to inspire goodness in his companions. He believed weapons and magic alone did not make one a hero; rather, anyone could be a hero if they but fought for goodness. Black History Month 2024 - Day 26: MJ Watson Michelle Jones-Watson is an original character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise, who pays homage to Mary Jane “MJ” Watson, a recurring love interest of Spider-Man. She is depicted as politically active with critical views, and a loner who claims to eschew friendship. In 2016, Michelle, commonly known as MJ, is introduced as a student at Midtown School of Science and Technology and enjoys mocking her classmates, including Peter Parker. When given the opportunity to take over as captain of the Academic Decathlon Team, she begins to open up more with teammates, such as Ned Leeds and Parker. In 2018, MJ is a victim of the Blip, and was restored to life in 2023. In 2024, MJ attended a school sponsored trip to Europe, where her affections are sought out by Parker and Brad Davis. When she deduces Peter’s identity as Spider-Man, MJ helps discover Mysterio’s fraudulence as the one who staged the Elemental invasion. After the trip, J. Jonah Jameson releases a doctored video of Mysterio and Spider-Man, claiming that Spider-Man is responsible for the Battle of London (during which Mysterio was killed) and exposing his identity as Parker. MJ is taken to custody by the Department of Damage Control along with May, Parker, and Ned; the teens then become infamous. In response, Parker consults with Stephen Strange about a spell that would help people forget that he is Spider-Man, but the spell is corrupted when Parker makes changes to the spell after Strange has begun casting it. Strange later corrects the spell, preserving space-time. Parker and MJ confess their love for each other and kiss passionately before the spell is completed, but not before she and Ned make Parker promise to find them. Parker later considers reintroducing himself to both MJ and Ned, but ultimately decides not to. Black History Month 2024 - Day 25: Nyota Uhura Nyota Uhura was a female Human Starfleet officer who served from the mid-23rd through the early 24th century. Uhura had a distinguished career as a communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise and USS Enterprise-A and was later given command of the USS Leondegrance until her retirement. Cadet Uhura’s first Starfleet assignment on space duty began in 2259 when she was assigned to the USS Enterprise on communications rotation duty under Captain Christopher Pike. After Pike’s promotion to fleet captain, Captain James T. Kirk assumed command of the Enterprise in 2265, with Uhura remaining for the transition. In 2266, Lieutenant Uhura was a command division staff officer aboard the USS Enterprise. She was the department head of the communications section. In 2269 on stardate 5483.7, the male Enterprise crew was incapacitated by the “siren’s song” of the second planet of the Taurean system’s female population, necessitating Uhura to take command of the ship. In the mid-2270s, Lieutenant Commander Uhura served aboard the refitted Enterprise under the command of Captain Will Decker, and later during the V’ger crisis under the command of Rear Admiral Kirk. Sometime after the Enterprise-A was decommissioned, Uhura was promoted to Captain and given command of the USS Leondegrance. From 2301 to 2305, Uhura and the Leondegrance carried out a five-year mission to the Lesser Magellanic Cloud, and participated in over one hundred first contact missions with the civilizations encountered there. Following the five-year mission, the Leondegrance became an Academy training ship in 2317, with Uhura retaining command until her retirement in 2333. During that time, many Academy cadets experienced faster-than-light travel for the first time under Uhura’s command; one of these was a young Jean-Luc Picard. Black History Month 2024 - Day 24: Tyroc Tyroc, real name Troy Stewart, was the only resident superhero of the island of Marzal, which usually existed in a different dimension. In the native language of Marzal, “Tyroc” means “Scream of the Devil.” Tyroc and his people were descended from African slaves who revolted on a ship during middle passage in the 18th century. Once all the slavers were set adrift, the liberated Africans settled on their own island off the coast of Africa, and built a civilization. The Legion of Super-Heroes first met Tyroc when several Legionnaires responded to an emergency on Marzal Island. At first, Tyroc attempted to stop the Legion from assisting. After patching up their differences and working together to save the island, Tyroc was offered Legion membership. He initially refused, although he had come to admire the tolerance and courage of the Legionnaires he had met. Marzal’s destruction at the hands of the Dominion was documented during the fourth volume of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Dominators managed to destroy Marzal Island within its dimensional pocket. An Earth recovering from the Dominion takeover chose their war heroes to lead them. Jacques Foccart (the second Invisible Kid) and Troy Stewart, who had proven themselves as effective leaders of the rebel forces, were rewarded with public offices by the people of Earth. Troy Stewart became the planet’s vice president, and Jacques became president. Eventually, Jacques resigned to rejoin the Legion, and Troy ascended to the presidency. Tyroc’s superpower was his reality-warping screams, which he could use to create dimensional portals and force fields, and to transmute, freeze, burn or simply destroy objects. Black History Month 2024 - Day 23: Steel II Natasha Irons is the daughter of John Henry’s brother, Clay, and his wife Blondel. She was introduced in the first issue of Steel’s solo series. Around the age of 16, she was kidnapped by Hazard; Steel had to rescue her. She used the drug Tar to help fight at her uncle’s side. She was later kidnapped by the villain Plasmus and, at the time, seemingly killed him by shattering him once Steel froze the villain. Nat later went with Steel to Metropolis when he opened Steelworks there, and became his assistant. When the Entropy Aegis of Darkseid trapped John, Natasha designed a suit of armor that uses the Aegis’ power, teleported to Apokolips, and fought Doomsday with the help of Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, and the pre-Crisis Supergirl. John, too injured to continue operating as Steel and intending to pass his legacy as Steel on to Natasha, made her a new, more advanced suit of armor. After an argument with her uncle, Natasha applied for Lex Luthor’s “Everyman Project,” became one of the first official subjects, and was given the codename “Starlight.” Natasha was later contacted by John, who forced her to rethink everything that Luthor had told her. After Luthor deactivated the powers of each Everyman hero outside of Infinity, Inc., Natasha realized that her uncle was right all along. Natasha is a member of the Superman Family. Natasha’s “Steel” armor boosts her strength to super-human levels, is equipped with limited-technomorphing abilities, and rockets in her boots allow her to fly. Her main weapon is her hammer, which has inertial dampeners that cause the hammer’s force to increase exponentially (the farther it is thrown, the harder it hits). The hammer can fire electromagnetic pulses and generate powerful electric and magnetic fields at Natasha’s command.
