📚APRIL WRAP-UP!📚 . April wasn’t a bad month... I got in 14 total (6 books, 8 comics). The highlights for the books were definitely Lost Man’s Lane, The Hellbound Heart, City in Ruins & The Angel of Indian Lake, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed or straight-up LOVED. The other two books were total duds. For comics, the highlights were the masterpiece that is Alan Moore & Brian Bolland’s Batman: The Killing Joke, and Joe Hill’s insanely enjoyable Basketful of Heads. However, there were no duds for comics, with my two least favorite still being far from bad. . May is going to see me getting a few Kings in, at least. I’m halfway through Bag of Bones and have Sleeping Beauties lined up next. Then there’s his new one later in the month. AND I’m really looking forward to Stuart Turton’s The Last Murder at the End of the World. Plus, I just downloaded 7 new graphic novels & two short novels from Hoopla. In terms of artwork, this is THE Joker; the most iconic, maniacal, perfectly executed Joker there’s probably ever been on the page. Brian Bolland’s work is just so damn perfect. In terms of story, Alan Moore delivers a vicious little scenario that explores the dynamic between Batman and the Joker with a wicked sense of ironic ambiguity. I really have no idea how I’d never read this one, before. It’s a quick and enjoyable graphic novel that understands these characters incredibly well and brings them to life with such beautifully exaggerated artistry. First time in over 15 years I didnt celebrate 420. I talked about this in therapy this week. Abstinence left a hole in my life I have yet to learn to fill. Still got enough bud at home, but I don't use. If I had none at home, I'd go buy some more, so to me it's best I keep it in the drawer and slowly start forgetting about it. REVIEWED! BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE (2016), directed by Sam Liu, starring Tara Strong, Mark Hamill, and Kevin Conroy. This could have easily ranked up there as one of the better animated Batman movies, but crucial errors were made with the first half. 5.9/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ Let me start with some praise. The voice cast for an animated Batman movie could not be more stacked. Hamill and Conroy are fantastic together. No surprise there. Tara Strong is almost just as good in her performance as Barbara. The film is also visually decent. The animation style feels close to perfect. None of the character designs look all that strange. It’s a little rough with movement, but it’s far from bad. The first act, in which Batman and Batgirl dispatch Paris Franz, feels tacked on. It does next to nothing to build up to the second and third acts. They had to build up Bruce and Barbara’s relationship somehow, but instead of using Joker, they, for some reason, decide to just insert a completely random villain. This was so strange to the point where I thought the film was building up Paris Franz as Joker. The only reason Barbara is even here is because Bruce needed a more emotional stake in finding Joker. This is made even worse because the second half is actually good. While I’ve always been iffy on Joker even having an origin story, the one that’s presented here works. It contributes to his character in the present. The exploration of the “one bad day” concept and the dichotomy between Batman and Joker is rather engrossing. Joker’s musical number feels both right at home and wonderfully out of place. The ending is beautifully dark and ambiguous. Put simply, the film’s potential was squandered by the first half.

Book #6 of 2024. The novelisation of Batman's 'The Killing Joke'. Which naturally loses a lot in translation, much like the animated adaptation TKJ has to add a load of unnecessary guff to pad out an otherwise small and concise story. I quite frankly don't give a shit about z list non-entities like Maxie Zeuss or Python Palmares. Unless it's Condiment King. Who is sadly absent. It shouldn't take 150-200 pages to build up to what people actually want to read. This is just one of those standard tie-in novels written by b+ authors, sadly.
