Let’s be real, @nandoscanada is the OG chicken place! Growing up, this place was such a treat! There was only one location that was pretty far and the flavours were so new and exciting to us. And the heat was for real! Oh how we loved it. And, at the time, it was quite affordable. And the sauce. Just there. For our consumption. But now we are in 2024 and well that’s simply not the case. The location I referred to earlier has since closed but many more have opened and of course prices have gone up. Some say the quality has gone down but i think the flavours are the same! A brewery/bar situation with a section of fun arcade games including skeet ball and jet pong, with a good atmosphere for everyone including my 3 year old nephew and 12 year old niece. There was a time when I frequented @charlatanvan a lot…some call it a dive bar, they call it a gastro pub, I call it the place I went to on rainy nights walking down commercial to the skytrain station for “just one more.” It was great to go back after so long. But half way through I realized this was my own fault. I thought black dragon implied deathly hot. Something about black meaning death and signifying extra hot and a dragon breathing fire…am I wrong?! Yes. Yes I am. As I continued to nibble and navigate, it dawned on me that the name and flavour make perfect sense. Black to imply a dark sweet teriyaki glaze and dragon as an indication to its Asian flavour. I took a page out of @vancitywingman ‘s book and returned to ye ol local watering hole @twoparrotsvan Well my friend and I constantly joke it’s our watering hole because we went once and decided we’d go every week! I guess this is something between a neighbourhood pub and a dive bar right in the city. The food is mediocre, the drinks are cheap, the service is hit or miss. Jakarta Heat @great_wings @wingsburnaby I asked the server what the next hottest wing after the bobby wing is and he said “Jakarta Heat.” So, naturally, here we are! 🇮🇩 Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia so I would expect these would have bit more of an East Asian flair but all I really got was a hint of lime. NAGOYA CHICKEN WING @kohakutendonvancouver #burnaby Nagoya style crispy chicken wings coated with Kohaku secret sauce. Nagoya is a city in the Chubu region of Japan. It has its own distinct cuisine specific to that region influenced by location, climate, historical foreign contact, and so forth. 🇯🇵 ❤️🥢 In this case, it refers to a deep fried crispy whole wing coated in a sweet soy sauce. It was sweet yet savoury. And sticky. But hey, as I always say, the messier, the tastier. Value: ⚡️- 8 for $17 sure it presents as 4 but LOOK CLOSELY but yes it ain’t cheap Taste: 🐓- so beautifully fully fried with a unique flavour which makes sense since it’s coated in a “secret sauce” (coated quite well but yet not saucy… magic?) and the batter is thin and crisp somehow webbing the parts together and yet NOT GREASY (nor was their tempura fyi) Heat: ❤️🔥 - not spicy and rather sweet and savoury; note the spicy sauce at this place is different and good (I ordered it on the side of my udon/tempura, definitely recommend) and there is a Japanese spicy powder called togarashi which is really good and packs a flavour punch (again, used on my udon/tempura) Unique: ✅ - they look lacklustre but I’d say these are worth trying once because it has unique Japanese elements and flavours and I’ve never seen the drum and flat still attached so this was pretty cool! There seem to be mixed reviews on this place but it’s pretty famed for its tempura bowels and I’d return. It’s a tad pricey maybe but it’s what you’re paying at other local chains so why not mix it up? Also the decor and ambience was very aesthetic. ITS NICE TO HAVE NICE THINGS IN BURNABY. THE FLAVOUR ON THESE. THE SPICE. 🔥 Chili Pepper House is a Vancouver staple that has my heart. They don’t play games (which is more than I can say about anyone I’ve ever dated). This past weekend I checked out @addahrestaurant to see a local band. I’ve passed this place a few times and always wanted to check it out. To my delight, they have wings on their Himalayan Journey menu. When I think tandoori wings this isn’t what I envision. I anticipate - Red. Fragrant. Smoky. That’s not to say they weren’t good. But anything is good if you’re hungry and wait 40 minutes for six wings. POUSSIN HABARI WINGS 😋 Poussin Sauce is a vibrant red Kenyan delight that is both spicy and tangy and very addictive. It is usually used as a marinade and sauce for chicken, which is where it’s name originated from. Poussin Chicken generally refers to a small young chicken (such as a cornish game hen). The combination is usually fried and tossed in sauce. So whether it’s wings tossed in sauce or a cornish game hen coated in sauce, it is fantastic. SAUCE. And @jambogrill has both 😍 🇰🇪 Value: ⚡️- $16 for 10 seems pretty standard 😕 Taste: 🐓- FUCK YEAH but for real the flavour is incredible and these are ADDICTING. The sauce is pooling so you know it’s good. And they give you more sauce. MORE SAUCE = MORE HAPPINESS. And fried to perfection with crispy yet succulent, tender results. Thoughts on convenience store hot food? @7elevencanada serves an interesting array of hot eats. I wanted this to be trashy goodness, and I suppose it was, but I definitely don’t need it again. Why did I do it? I don’t know. Life’s an adventure. Live in the moment. Live Laugh Love. And I feel like it’s a very North American experience. Points for giving more flats than drums 🤷🏾♀️ They were listed as “breaded wings” so I guess that tracks. So. Much. Breading. It also stated “double glazed in classic buffalo sauce” but it was barely tossed in some sort of sweet asian sticky sauce. Which wasn’t bad? Anyway, I felt a bit gross and immediately bloated after just three. I do recall trying a variety of wings here some years ago and it being much worse. Dry with no flavour yet less breading (swipe to see a pic). So… it’s improved? I don’t know. I can’t deny that @earlsrestaurant is a vancouver favourite, particularly for their Wing Wednesdays. Honestly, Earls Wing Wednesday is a ritual for so many. However, I used to come with my family Friday nights growing up because a family that eats wings together stays together! On this particular night, I ventured alone and paid full price because sometimes you just got a craving for a classic! Earls is always generally consistent and they have a solid happy hour. I always enjoy the food @theperiperishack and some of their combos are a really good value! There seems to be chicken joints popping up literally on every corner yet this place still manages to offer something different! Unique flavours and grilling perfection! Literally, the chicken is always moist and so rich in flavour. And I’m a sucker for sauce. It is SLATHERED in sauce. And you can get more sauce. I love when wings are offered as a combo because it truly is a meal! @bostonpizzacanada gets it right, offering their selection with fries or salad. Of course, I opted for hot but switched it up by going with oven roasted instead of fried. Is it East African or is it Indian? Is it everything I ever hoped for? No. But they are good. These Habari Wings tossed in pili pili sauce paired with Masala Mogo (fried casava) from @jambogrill is a satisfying combination. Clearly, as I only captured this after devouring the majority of them! 😋 🇺🇬 🇰🇪 🇹🇿 🇮🇳 Value: ⚡️- pricey but reasonable for the portion ($16); less than half pictured since i scarfed them down Taste: 🐓- the flavour is so good that it compensates for the lack of crispness and sauciness as promised by the menu picture Heat: ❤️🔥 - spicy enough but definitely go for the poussin flavour for more of a kick Unique: ✅ - this flavour profile is unique and isn’t like pili pili at nandos; this is particular to this restaurant Even though this dish didn’t necessarily deliver, I know this place is solid and I want to give this item another try. Perhaps because it is a takeout order, there is still something left to be desired for? Other must-try’s include the Masala Mogo, Poussin Chicken (or wings), Masala Fish, and what is likely the best Gujarati-East African (with peanuts) daar in the city.
