My son and I had accidentally stumbled across it. The sight of it brought me to tears. My son was maybe 7 at the time. “It’s so fascinating, mom” he told me. “Look at how beautifully the bones curve. Nature is wonderful.” We made several trips back to see how nature was recycling the deer to feed the other animals, insects, soil. My son was right. Nature is wonderful. I made one last trip back to see if I could find any vertebrae. Animals had scattered the bones over the years. We had never touched it, not wanting to interfere with nature’s process. I found a few and brought them home, read up on the internet about how to clean bones (turns out lots of people collect bones!) and decided on the best way to make molds that could be used as candles. And here they are! Many years in the making, I’m selling them in a set of 4 beeswax candles with a cotton wick. The largest is 2 inches tall x 2.25 wide x 2.25 weighing 1 ounce. Oddities Vertebrae Beeswax Candle in a Jar. This deer died naturally. I harvested the vertebrae bones after the wild animals had cleaned the bones off naturally. I then cleaned the bones myself and made my own molds to produce these lovely beeswax candles. You should not burn the candle while it is in the jar. Remove the candle from the jar and place the candle on a heat proof surface before lighting it. Keep the jar and moss for another adventure. The jar reads “Vintage Quality” in raised letters with a star. The jar measures 3.875 tall x 2.125 wide with an aluminum lid. I am making an exception here because these are the very first candle molds I have ever made myself and I’m super excited about the way they turned out! When I first told Mark and Holden what I wanted to create they were both like “Eeewwwww! You want to do what?” But my dad was all supportive and curious about the process. I was watching a certain movie about a boy wizard who rides a train to school, and in one scene there are the most beautiful twisted spinal column candles. For years I have thought about how to make them. Because the spine twists and has long pieces of bone jutting out 360 degrees, it would be almost impossible to make them in one mold. So I think the set designers must have either sculpted each candle by hand, or molded each candle in several pieces and then melted them together in a column, with just the top section having a wick and being the only true candle part in the piece.
