This is the second of two European playing card decks I found to reside in the elegant inlaid box purchased from @laffindesign . B. Dondorf Frankfort Playing Cards No. 162 The ace of hearts sports a 30 centesimi Italian tax stamp and a secondary Venetian stamp dated 3 September 1895. Dondorf cardmakers was a German printing company, based in Frankfurt, founded in April 1833 by Bernard J. Dondorf, who came from a Jewish immigrant family. They sold stationery and cards, printing using lithographic printing techniques. Around 1840, as chromolithography became popular, Dondorf diversified into the playing card business. Dondorf had a successful export market, printing bank notes for Italy and Japan. In the years leading up to the First World War, they were the principal maker of playing cards for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The war resulted in irrecoverable losses and Germany then entered a period of hyperinflation, which decimated the business. With the rise of Nazism and the consequent oppression of Jews, the Dondorf family scattered abroad. (Wikipedia)

His work was documented through attempts to fire a .30 calibre bullet through objects and capture the moment of impact on film. Here is the first of the two antique European decks of cards that I found for the beautiful inlaid box I purchased from @laffindesign . Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik. Schneider & Co. Altenburg, S.A. (ca. 1890) Ex-collection Tom & Judy Dawson The tax stamp on the ace of hearts reflects the unified tax legislation for playing cards levied in the German Empire from 1879 until its end in 1918. The text reads: 'DEUTSCHES REICH,' with a tax office number and a value in Pfennig (PF) below. The values were 30 Pfennig ('DREISZIG PF.') for packs with up to 36 cards and 50 Pfennig ('FUNFZIG PF.') for packs with more cards, such as this one. The "No. 90" tax office number corresponds to Altenburg. (Peter Endebrocke - www.endebrocke.de) Altenburg is a city in Thuringia, Germany, located 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Leipzig. It is the capital of the Altenburger Land district and part of a polycentric old-industrial textile and metal production region. Altenburg was the residence of different Ernestine duchies, of whom the Saxe-Altenburg persisted until the end of monarchy in Germany in 1918. Industrialization reached Altenburg in the first half of the 19th century and flourished until the Great Depression. 1894 Bicycle Playing Cards Advertising - After receiving two significant awards at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, USPCC wasted no time capitalizing on the wins. This outstanding colour graphic of the King riding a bicycle was featured in “Card Games and How To Play Them,” a booklet sold by USPCC containing the rules for popular card games and company advertising. Ads in regular publications used this other more simple black & white example. By the early 1900s, a version of this image was adopted as the joker design for the Bicycle brand, and the rest is history!

If you thought yesterday's Mystic 888 Elks back was a thing of beauty, have a look at this alternate version. This is from a 1906 USPCC salesman's sample book. I have never seen a full deck of Elk playing cards in this color, except in a post from @bicyclecards . As far as I know, there are only a few blue Elk decks in collectors hands, and none in purple. Finding a purple deck is definitely a holy grail for me! I happened to be in the Warwick, New York cemetery on Thursday and caught a glimpse of a stained glass windows in a crypt. You can see what I found in the last few pictures. What a strange coincidence that I would see that just as I was sharing the Elks story. #888Mystic

After mentioning the rare Mystic 888 Elks playing cards in my last post, I thought you might like to see them. A few interesting bits of information about the Elks back: 1. Each of the Mystic backs has a unique branded joker. I have never seen the Elks joker. When @bicyclecards posted their Elks deck a few years ago, it was accompanied by the Goat joker. 2. This particular deck is the only Mystic deck I have ever seen in an advertising box. All others have been in standard Mystic 888 branded boxes. 3. All of the five Mystic designs were issued with plain and gilded edges. Elks is the only one of the five that was also issued in two different colorways (stay tuned). 4. Old Elk Whiskey still exists, but it is probably unrelated to the "whisky" originally produced by Stoll & Co. in Lexington, Kentucky. The current Old Elk is distilled in Fort Collins, Colorado (oldelk.com). #888Mystic

My interest in fraternal playing cards started with the spectacular Mystic 888 decks produced by the U S Playing Card Company in 1898. Five decks were offered: Elks, Shriners, Knights of Phythias, Odd Fellows, and Goat. The latter was meant to be a generic offering for fraternal orders not represented in the other four designs. The Mystic playing cards are very rare, which suggests they were not that popular. This is puzzling because they are very beautiful, and their intricate gilded designs represent the secret societies very well. In contrast, most of the fraternal cards issued in subsequent years are nowhere near as compelling. This 1977 Benevolent Protective Order of Elks deck is mint sealed in its original cellophane, which accounts for the reflections on the grand exalted ruler.
