🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz W111 was a chassis code given to a range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971, including four-door saloons (1959–1968) and two-door coupés and cabriolets (1961–1971). The bodywork of the saloons featured distinctive tailfins that gave the models their Heckflosse nickname — German for "fintail". Somewhat confusingly, both the W111 and W112 lines included vehicles with different Paul Bracq-designed bodywork, the 2-door coupé and cabriolet. Design of a replacement for the two-door Pontons began in 1957. Since most of the chassis and drivetrain were to be unified with the saloon, the scope was focused on the exterior styling. Mercedes chose the work of engineer Paul Bracq, which featured a more square, subtle rear-end treatment, more evocative of the later squarish styling of the subsequent W108/W109 than the sharp-edged tailfins of the saloon. Production began in late 1960, with the coupé making its debut in February of the next year. The convertible followed a few months later. In 1965, Mercedes-Benz launched replacements for both W111 and W112 saloons, the W108 and W109 respectively. Daimler declined to develop a two-door W108/W109 vehicle, instead continuing production of the aging W111/W112 with modest changes. A final model was added in 1969, the 280 SE 3.5, the first Mercedes post-War coupé with more than 3 litres. The car was fitted with the brand-new M116 3499 cc V8. It produced 200 hp (150 kW) and a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). The last W111 coupé was produced in 1971, the indirect replacement was the C107 SLC, which was a hardtop coupé version of the SL roadster. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (chassis code W 198) is a two-seat sports car that was produced from 1954 to 1957 as a gullwinged coupé and from 1957 to 1963 as a roadster. The 300 SL traces its origins to the company's 1952 racing car, the W194, and the designation "SL" is an abbreviation of the German term "super-leicht," meaning "super-light," a reference to the car's racing-bred lightweight construction. The 300 SL was capable of reaching speeds of up to 263 km/h (163 mph), earning it a reputation as a sports car racing champion and making it the fastest production car of its time. The car's iconic gullwing doors and innovative lightweight tubular-frame construction contributed to its status as a groundbreaking and highly influential automobile. However, the roof-hinged doors were not an aesthetic end in themselves, but actually technically necessary. This was because the tubular roll cage was so high at the sills that conventional door constructions were simply not possible. Mercedes-Benz's United States importer at the time, Max Hoffmann, suggested the idea of Mercedes producing a toned-down Grand Prix car targeted to affluent performance enthusiasts in the booming post-war American market at a 1953 directors' meeting in Stuttgart. Mercedes' new general director, Fritz Konecke, agreed to Hoffman's order for 1,000 cars to guarantee the success of the production run; the 300 SL was introduced at the February 1954 New York International Auto Show instead of the Frankfurt or Geneva shows, where company models usually debuted. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz W201 was the internal designation for the Mercedes 190 series sedans, a range of front-engine, rear drive, five passenger, four-door sedans manufactured from 1982 to 1993 as the company's first compact class automobile. Designed by Bruno Sacco, head of styling at Mercedes-Benz from 1975 to 1999, the W201 debuted at the 1982 Paris Motor show. From January 1974 to January 1982, Mercedes researching and developing the W201, subsequently saying it was 'massively over-engineered'. The W201 introduced a 5-link rear suspension subsequently used in E and C class models, front and rear anti-roll bars, anti-dive and anti-squat geometry—as well as airbags, ABS brakes and seatbelt pretensioners. Its extensive use of light-weight high-strength steel enabled it to withstand a concrete barrier offset crash at 35 mph (56 km/h) without serious passenger injury or cabin deformation. The 190 E (E for Einspritzung, or Fuel Injection) model uses the Bosch KE-Jetronic Multi-Point Fuel Injection to meter fuel instead of the carburetor of 190 models. Thanks to their fuel injection system and larger intake and exhaust valves, 190 E models made more power than non-fuel injected 190 models. On top Mercedes introduced a performance variant, marketed as the 190 E 2.3-16V, at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. The last Mercedes-Benz 190E was manufactured on 17 May 1993. Manufactured in both Bremen and Sindelfingen, Germany, production reached 1,879,629 over its eleven-year model life. The first C-Class (W202) was replacing the 190. 🇩🇪 Long before the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz SLS, enthusiasts and tuners had sought to evoke the spirit of the Three-Pointed Star’s famous ‘Gullwing’. In the early 1980s, German tuning house Styling-Garage unveiled its C126-based 500SGS Gullwing, while towards the end of the decade, Hartmut Boschert sought to repeat the trick with the newly launched C124. Boschert’s riff on the gullwing theme—the B300—was based on a 300 CE, which was modified to accept the front end from an R129-generation SL. Significant changes to the car’s structure were made, with the C-pillar being brought forward by some 25 centimetres and the sills strengthened to accept wild 1.66-metre-wide gullwing doors that allowed access to the rear seats. The front seats were also borrowed from the R129 SL, while the engine was fitted with twin turbochargers, resulting in a power output of 283 horsepower. The car was unveiled at the 1989 Frankfurt International Motor Show and advertised at a cost of DM 186,000 which was roughly five times what a standard 300CE cost. Though Boschert targeted a production run of 300 examples, only a handful were ever made, and the example offered is the only B300 to feature gullwing doors. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz SL (W 113) is a two-seat roadster, introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and produced from 1963 through 1971. It replaced both the 300 SL (W 198) and the 190 SL (W 121 BII). The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who created its patented, slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the "Pagoda" nickname. All models were equipped with an inline-six engine with multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, boot lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminium to reduce weight. The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright Bosch "fishbowl" headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the 300 SL roadster. W 113 SLs were typically configured as a "Coupé/Roadster" with a soft-top and an optional removable hardtop. A 2+2 was introduced with the 250 SL "California Coupé," which had a fold-down rear bench seat instead of the soft-top. The 250 SL was introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show. Production had already commenced in December 1966 and ended in January 1968. The short one-year production run makes the 250 SL the rarest of the W 113 series cars. The main change was the use of the 2,496 cc (2.5 L) engine. The nominal maximum power remained unchanged at 150 PS but torque improved from 197 N⋅m. The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971, when the W 113 was replaced by the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350 SL. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz "Ponton" series are a range of sedans / saloon car models from Daimler-Benz, introduced starting in 1953, and subsequently nicknamed 'Ponton' (the German word for "pontoon"), referring to its ponton styling, a prominent styling trend that unified the previously articulated hood, body, fenders and runnings boards into a singular, often slab-sided envelope. At the time, Mercedes itself did not refer to any of its cars using the nickname. The 1953 Mercedes-Benz W120, marketed as 180, four-cylinder sedans were Mercedes' second totally new series of passenger cars since World War II, following the 1951 introduction of the top of the range W186 Type 300 “Adenauer”, and replaced the pre-war-designed Type 170 and Type 170 S. Contrasting very visibly with the traditional distinct fenders on that body-on-frame model and the ones before it, the 'Pontons' were Mercedes' first monocoque, unitary body production models. Mercedes expanded the base Ponton model into a diversified line, developing multiple series based on the 180, by introducing more engines and stretching the body. Six-cylinder models received a longer nose, and 'S'-models also a longer passenger compartment, offering more legroom. A six-cylinder coupe and convertible were further derived, and a shortened floorpan of the four-cylinder sedan was also modified to serve as the structure for the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL roadster. The 'Ponton' saloons were the automaker's main production models until 1959, adding up to 80% of Mercedes-Benz car production between 1953 and 1959, with some models lasting until 1962. 🇩🇪 These days almost unbelievable, the 3rd Mercedes SL generation (R107) has been built from 1971 until 1989. A lifespan of 18 years is a very long time compared to the current model cycles. After several design concept were presented, the final design for W126 was approved and frozen in 1976. The design work for coupé began immediately after the approval and was finalised in 1977. After six years of development, the W126 was introduced at the IAA Frankfurt in September 1979. At the introduction, S-Class was available in two wheelbase lengths (standard and long) and three petrol engine options with one six-cylinder inline engine and two V8 engines. The diesel engine option was introduced in September 1981 exclusively for the North American market. At the 1981 IAA Frankfurt, a coupé version of S-Class, C126, was introduced with 380 SEC and 500 SEC. It was the first time that a coupé version was derived from S-Class chassis. The W126 was revised in 1985 for 1986 model year. The revised "Second Series" model range was introduced at 1985 IAA Frankfurt with new six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and the V8 petrol engines enlarged to 4.2 and 5.5 litres. The 5-litre V8 was carried over. The visual changes included the smoother bumpers and side claddings, revised alloy wheels, and deeper front bumper with integrated air dam. The long 12-year production resulted in 818,063 sedans/saloons and 74,060 coupés being built, totaling 892,123. W126 is so far the most successful and the longest in production for S-Class. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (W121) was produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963. Internally referred to as W121 (BII or B2), it was first shown in prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show, and was available with an optional removable hardtop. The 190 SL presented more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing, and fully independent suspension. Both cars had double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear. Instead of the 300 SL's expensive purpose-built W198 tubular spaceframe, the 190 SL's R121 structure used a shortened unitary floorpan modified from the W121 base saloon. The 190 SL was powered by a new, slightly oversquare 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) Type M121 BII 1.9 L straight-four SOHC engine. In detuned form, it was later used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models. In 1956, a few six-cylinder prototypes were built for testing. A 190SL with a unique engine, using the 300SL block, squeezed into the engine bay with a one-off mix of Benz-bin parts was entered in the 1956 Alpine Rally, but the costs of production would be prohibitive. Two other prototypes, fitted with fuel injected M180 220SE engines were baptised the W127 / 220SL. In June 1956, Rudi Uhlenhaut and Karl Kling lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in the two W127s 25 seconds faster than a regular 190SL. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz W201 was the internal designation for the Mercedes 190 series sedans, a range of front-engine, rear drive, five passenger, four-door sedans manufactured from 1982 to 1993 as the company's first compact class automobile. Designed by Bruno Sacco, head of styling at Mercedes-Benz from 1975 to 1999, the W201 debuted at the 1982 Paris Motor show. From January 1974 to January 1982, Mercedes researching and developing the W201, subsequently saying it was 'massively over-engineered'. The W201 introduced a 5-link rear suspension subsequently used in E and C class models, front and rear anti-roll bars, anti-dive and anti-squat geometry—as well as airbags, ABS brakes and seatbelt pretensioners. Its extensive use of light-weight high-strength steel enabled it to withstand a concrete barrier offset crash at 35 mph (56 km/h) without serious passenger injury or cabin deformation. The 190 E (E for Einspritzung, or Fuel Injection) model uses the Bosch KE-Jetronic Multi-Point Fuel Injection to meter fuel instead of the carburetor of 190 models. Thanks to their fuel injection system and larger intake and exhaust valves, 190 E models made more power than non-fuel injected 190 models. On top Mercedes introduced a performance variant, marketed as the 190 E 2.3-16V, at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. The last Mercedes-Benz 190E was manufactured on 17 May 1993. Manufactured in both Bremen and Sindelfingen, Germany, production reached 1,879,629 over its eleven-year model life. In 1993 the C-Class (W202) was replacing the 190. 🇩🇪 The 300 SEL 6.3, that's how Mercedes muscle was looking in the pre AMG era. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 was built from 1968 to 1972. It featured the company's powerful 6.3-litre M100 V8 from the flagship 600 (W100) limousine installed in the normally six-cylinder powered (but still premium) Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL (W109). The result was a nearly 2-ton sports sedan with muscle car performance. At the time of its release it was one of the world's fastest four-door cars. The car started out as a private venture in 1966 by company engineer Erich Waxenberger. His principle was simple: take the powerful 6.3 litre Mercedes-Benz M100 V8 from the massive 600 saloon and limousine, and fit it into the engine bay of the top-end 6-cylinder 300 SEL W109 model. The result was an impressive level of performance for the era and for the style of automobile. The company turned the prototype into a production model, introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968. This not only enhanced Mercedes-Benz's reputation for performance vehicles, languishing since the demise of the iconic Gullwing and Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadsters of the 1950s, but made better use of the M100 engine production facilities. By the end of line's production the ~6,500 built for the 300 SEL 6.3 far outnumbered the 2,700 turned out for the 600. The 6.3 was known for its ability to cruise at over 200 km/h (124 mph) with five occupants in complete comfort. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is a GT1 sports car built and produced by Mercedes-Benz in conjunction with their then motorsport partner AMG. Intended for racing in the new FIA GT Championship series in 1997, the CLK GTR was designed primarily as a race car, road car versions were necessary though in order to meet homologation standards. The road-legal homologated version of the CLK-GTR would simply gain the suffix Straßenversion, German for Street version. Only a singular road car was completed in 1997 and was shown in that year's Frankfurt Motor Show. The rest of the road cars were built at Affalterbach by AMG in collaboration with HWA over 1998, and production ceased in mid-1999. Many components of the road car were lifted directly from the racecar. Of the 28 produced, 2 were prototypes, 6 were roadsters, and 20 were coupés, 2 of which left the factory in "SuperSport" specification. When the first production run of 20 CLK GTR coupés ended in 1999, one roadster was also produced and held onto by AMG until 2002. The next five would be converted from coupés to roadsters based on existing GTR chassis by HWA, and were made available in 2006. Modifications to the coupé included moving the engine intake from the roof to the sides, door-mounted mirrors, an integrated rollbar behind the seats, a revised front grille and rear wing which resembled the fixed rear wing of the race cars. At the time of manufacture, Guinness World Records named the CLK Straßenversion and its siblings the world's most expensive production car, retailing for US$1,547,620. This record stood until the introduction of the Ferrari FXX-K in 2015. 🇩🇪 Daimler-Benz made two road-legal 300 SLR coupés, known today as Uhlenhaut Coupé. One of these two cars once served as the personal car of its designer, Daimler-Benz motorsport chief Rudolf Uhlenhaut, hence the name. He had ordered two of the nine W196 chassis built to be set aside for modification into an SLR/SL hybrid. The resulting coupé featured a significantly more sculpted body than the 300 SL fitted over a slightly widened version of the SLR's chassis, with signature 'gull-wing' doors still needed to clear its spaceframe's high sill beams. Due to a horrible accident in LeMans in 1955 Mercedes announced a planned withdrawal from competitive motorsport. The hybrid program was abandoned, leaving Uhlenhaut to appropriate one of the leftover mules as a company car with only a large suitcase-sized muffler added to dampen its near-unsilenced exhaust pipes. With a maximum speed approaching 290 km/h (180 mph), the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé easily earned the reputation of being the era's fastest road car. A story circulates that, running late for a meeting, Uhlenhaut roared up the autobahn from Munich to Stuttgart in just over an hour, a 220-kilometre (137 mi) journey that today takes two-and-a-half hours. One Uhlenhaut Coupé has been preserved by Mercedes-Benz and is displayed at its corporate museum in Bad Cannstatt. Its only sibling was sold from the museum in May 2022 to a private collector for €141 million euros or $142 million dollars with the proceeds used to establish the Mercedes-Benz Fund. The price was the highest ever paid for a car, either at private sale or public auction. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz W123 is a range of executive cars produced from November 1975 to January 1986. The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W114, as the most successful Mercedes, selling 2.7 million units before production ended in the autumn of 1985 for the saloon/sedan versions and January 1986 for coupés and estates/station wagons. Following a slow production build-up during the first year, customers who placed their orders faced a lengthy waiting period of nine to twelve months. A black market emerged for the customers who were willing to pay more for immediate delivery. The slightly used W123 commanded about 5,000 Deutsche Mark premium over its original sale price. Like its predecessors, the W123 gained the reputation of being well built and reliable. Many taxi companies chose the W123, and they were a common sight in Germany. Reaching 500,000 or 1,000,000 km with only minor mechanical issues was common with W123s used as taxicabs. Once the W123 reached the end of its service life, they were often shipped to Africa and third world countries where they were highly esteemed for their ability to travel on rough roads and to not require frequent maintenance. W123 production ended in January 1986 with 63 final T-models rolling out. While Mercedes-Benz never built its own convertible, they have been built by external companies such as Crayford in the UK, who built the St. Tropez models, and also by Niko-Michaels in New York, USA. In the city of Hagen, Germany, until 2016 one small family owned firm- Baehr, have produced convertible versions of the C123 Coupe models, and also sold kits for cabrio conversions of the same model. Modified at a customer’s request, AMG started with a damaged 300 SEL and turned it into an all-out racing machine. Boring the engine out to 6.8 litres, which produced 420 bhp, AMG fitted aluminium doors, widened the track, fitted larger tyres, and flared the wheel arches. Due to its ungainly proportions and red paintwork, the car was quickly nicknamed the ‘Red Pig’, but soon enough the car proved itself in the crucible of motorsport. At the 1971 24 Hours of Spa, the car won its class and finished 2nd overall, having started 5th on the grid. 🇩🇪 The Mercedes-Benz "Ponton" series are a range of sedans / saloon car models from Daimler-Benz, introduced starting in 1953, and subsequently nicknamed 'Ponton' (the German word for "pontoon"), referring to its ponton styling, a prominent styling trend that unified the previously articulated hood, body, fenders and runnings boards into a singular, often slab-sided envelope. At the time, Mercedes itself did not refer to any of its cars using the nickname. First introduced in 1956, the Mercedes-Benz 220 S was perched atop the 220 model range and was the last of the ‘Ponton’ series Mercedes-Benzes. Featuring a unitized body/frame construction and a fully independent suspension, the 220 S provided the kind of motoring experience that Mercedes-Benz’s demanding clients had come to expect of one of the most storied brands in automotive history, especially from the flagship ‘S-Class’ models. The most desirable version of the 220 S was the cabriolet model. 🇩🇪 The all-new Mercedes-Benz W113 series debuted in March 1963 as the 230 SL, replacing the 190 SL, and in many ways, the 300 SL as well. Both popular and widely coveted, the sporty, Paul Bracq-designed “Pagoda” was a more than worthy recipient of the SL moniker, and nearly 50,000 would be built before the end of W113 production in early 1971. Although the mechanical specification of the model would change over the years, every W113 received identical bodywork – except one. In the weeks following the launch of the W113, Pininfarina approached Mercedes-Benz with the idea of producing a coupe version of the car. Somewhat uncharacteristically, Mercedes-Benz approved the project and supplied a car to the popular Torino coachbuilder, stating that the finished car must retain the general brand image of the company. Internally, Pininfaina chose 29-year-old, American-born Tom Tjaarda, who had recently finished the design for the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, to lead the project. In late 1964, this 230 SL Coupe was presented in German Racing Silver on the Pininfarina stand at the Paris and Torino Motor Shows. Despite many inquiries, Mercedes-Benz opted not to put the Coupe into production, and the car would forever remain a one-off. 🇩🇪 For part two of my "sport saloons of the last century Sunday" I decided to go with an even rarer car than the Lotus Omega, the Mercedes 190E EVO II The Mercedes-Benz 190 (W201) was the internal designation for the Mercedes 190 series sedans, a range of front-engine, rear drive, five passenger, four-door sedans manufactured over a single generation, from 1982 to 1993 as the company's first compact class automobile. In March 1990, at the Geneva Auto Show, the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II was shown. With the success of the first Evolution model, this model's 502-unit production was already sold before it was unveiled. The "Evo II" included the AMG PowerPack fitted to the same short-stroke 2,463 cc (2.5 L) inline-four engine as the Evolution, producing a maximum power output of 232 hp (235 PS; 173 kW) in addition it has a full adjustable suspension allowing the ride height to be adjusted from an interior switch. An obvious modification to the Evolution II was the radical body kit (designed by Prof. Richard Eppler from the University of Stuttgart) with a large adjustable rear wing, rear window spoiler, and Evolution II 17-inch alloy wheels. The kit served an aerodynamic purpose—it was wind tunnel tested to reduce drag to 0.29, while at the same time increasing downforce. Period anecdotes tell of BMW research and development chief, Wolfgang Reitzle, saying "the laws of aerodynamics must be different between Munich and Stuttgart; if that rear wing works, we'll have to redesign our wind tunnel." 500 examples were painted in "blauschwarz" blue/black metallic.
