Paw paw says thanks for followin' along on our #wallerfamilyreunion mini stories. He's back in #Mississippi and I'm home in #Texas. Ok, maybe paw paw didn't say thanks cause he doesn't quite understand the internet or our fascinations with it or takin' pictures or tellin' stories. After all he still says "bein' in the Internet", when he tells the story of the man who interviewed him once. But I like to think he'd say thank you to all y'all if he did understand. What we find fascinatin' was just every day life for Paw Paw growin' up in rural Mississippi helpin' raise his siblings as he is the 'much oldest' of 10. Since everyone seems to be lovin' my #wallerfamilyreunion stories I'll share a few more. "Uncle James where is little James goin' again for gradschool?" "Baby, I don't even remember. I'm just so happy he's goin' for more education" Pause: Little James isn't little. He's an Ex-division 1 football player the size of most NFL players. "He saw all the white on the ground and thought Daddy farmed snow. We laughed. Daddy farmed cotton. We grew corn and beans too" "What did y'all do with it all," I ask? "We sold it", he replies. He sits next to me and goes: "Hello ms. Grits...you make good grits?" I respond, "I like to think I do. As I tell him how my grits are made." He smiles and responds: "the secret to real creamy grits is equal parts to equal parts to equal parts to 3 parts. 1 part heavy cream. 1 part half & half to one part grits to 3 parts water. With some butter and salt. "Pause", I tell him, "you out cream and half & half in your grits?" "Yes ma'am and do you know why you always have your whisk ready?" "No sir!" We sit in ATL at the MLK memorial. A video plays. Martin Luther King Jr's famous 'I have a Dream' speech begins to boom from the tv speakers in the small museum. I look over as she begins to cry and clap. She leans over and goes, A few years before he died a white man and woman came for momma. We were so scared we cried, "please don't take momma! We were to young to know he was an advocate. The Man took momma and the lady stayed with us. She was so nice and played games. Much later we found out the man snuck momma to go Vote. He was fightin' for our rights!" "You know your Great Uncles marched with Dr. King," she finishes. "Uncle Mac flew the plan overhead that was to keep watch over Dr King when he marched." I knew that he was the first black commercial pilot in Mississippi so why didn't I know this? Before I can even get a question in she goes, "we where at school when the assassination happened. They sent us home. Said close all the windows and lock all the doors. But we didn't have locks on our doors. We were so close to Memphis they were worried for us. I came home and sat by the window.
