Last minute creations for the show. I leave tomorrow morning with hundreds of pieces to be showcased. By now you all know that my pieces are one of a kind and so it's never wise to wait till Sunday to pick up what your heart is set on already. I want to remind everyone of this because I saw in Toronto how people would come by and browse and fall in love with a piece or two and then come back 2 days later only to be let down that it was sold to someone else. For those of you who wonder why I do it this way, the answer is simple : self preservation. I've been doing this as a business since 1997 and have personally witnessed losing my passion because I have to mass produce to meet the demand. I know I cannot ever meet the public's demand for this art, so I make unique pieces because that's what keep the passion, inspiration and creativity flowing. I don't ever want to loathe what I do so this is why each piece is one of a kind. This piece has a few elements that I'm really proud of. Firstly, mounting the perfect coyote skull onto the piece of broken coyote skull was a challenge band took some creative thinking to achieve it. Then mounting the beetles in such a way that they perfectly hugged the uneven area that they were going to be set in. And lastly, getting the butterflies to look like they were alive with their wings arched up. That also presented a challenge. I chose to use uncommon specimens for this piece coming from Peru, Tanzania, Philippines, Laos, Mexico, Cameroon and Indonesia. This too will be featured this weekend. From a breeder in Mindoro island, Philippines we just received nearly 200 pairs of the infamous Vampire Butterfly. The family there specializes in breeding this species and we got their entire crop for 2018. They are single brooded most years. But can be double brooded depending on the wet and dry seasons. Its latin name is Atrophaneura semperi albofasciata. These poisonous butterflies are in my opinion the hardest to spread 😌. Now the pain staking job lf spreading them. Here is a short feeding video of our Honduran Curly hair tarantula ( Brachypelma albopilosum). Our studio back yard has a few of these ground beetles called Carabus nemoralis and the kids snagged one for feeding the bird eater. Shes a ravenous eater.
