During the colonization of Indonesia by the Dutch, the colonial administration employed a strategy of utilizing indigenous administrators to facilitate their rule. This approach, known as the "indirect rule" system, allowed the Dutch to govern the vast archipelago more efficiently. Indigenous elites and rulers were co-opted into the colonial administration, often serving as intermediaries between the Dutch authorities and the local population.
