This small bowl is a good representation of my work and research here in Ecuador so far. After exploring 4 different wild clays, and firing a few loads of unsuccessful glaze tests, we finally unloaded the kiln this week to find some pots that I’m pretty happy with. This bowl is made with a coarse/toasty red ochre containing lots of small chunks of shale and quartzite, which we collected maybe 50 meters from my cabaña. Spent the day testing some of the raw clay from the mountain with my host Maya. We’re not yet sure how it’s going to fire, so we’ve started to prepare some test tiles and small bowls. It’s a very sandy clay and took some getting used to, but it threw surprisingly well - actually I found that it threw better than the commercial clay imported from Cuenca! Its structure is very good due to the excessive grog/grit, but that also means we’ve had to be careful not to bump it around too much. The wood we have available is mostly eucalyptus, which is pretty cool as it’s not something I would ever have been able to work with sustainably in Canada. I’ve read that it’s quite high in silica (compared to most wood ash) so I’m hoping that the clay we’re using fires to at least mid-range temperatures, otherwise we may need to add an additional flux to the simple clay/ash glazes we’ll be preparing later this week. Maya’s studio is down in the village, but luckily we have a small wheel and open-air workshop up on the mountain which is where we’ll be doing most of our experimenting.
