On average, wooden decks last between 15 and 30 years. With proper care and maintenance, your deck can last for decades, come rain or shine. When it comes to treating and protecting decks, you have two different options: deck oil and deck stain. ✔️Deck oil: generally comes in natural or transparent colors and enhances the wood’s natural appearance. It penetrates deeply into the wood and provides inside-out protection. This prevents the wood from cracking, splitting, or warping and should keep it nourished and healthy for longer. Oil is also very durable, easy to maintain, dirt, and water-resistant. It also protects against rain and sun, so your wood is less likely to weather and turn gray, maintaining a better appearance for longer. Deck oil also tends to be less slippery because it penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it. However, oil cannot be stained or painted, so if you want to change the finish, you’ll have to remove the oil first. ✔️Deck stains: are similar to varnish and are available in a variety of colors. Unlike oils, deck stains essentially seal the wood from the elements rather than penetrating deeply into the wood. It provides the same level of weather protection and helps prevent rotting and aging. Stains are also very resistant to foot traffic. They create a tough layer over the wood so they can handle many steps. However, this layer can become slippery when wet. Deck stains are more prone to peeling and flaking if not properly maintained. Because of the pigmentation of stains, they may cover the texture of your deck, so if you want a natural look, it’s better to use an oil. Properly maintained, hardwood floors can last a lifetime. The key to preserving your investment is assuring that the finish on your floor is still doing its job. You can test your hardwood floors to see what they need (if anything) by going to a high-traffic area where the finish is likely to be most worn. Pour a tablespoon or two of water onto the floor and watch... Does the water: 💧Bead up so that you can wipe it up without a trace? Congratulations! Your floor’s finish is doing its job! 💧Soak into the wood after a few minutes, darkening the floor only slightly? Do not panic, your floor’s finish is only partially worn. Immediate refinishing probably is not necessary but a recoat may be in order. 💧Immediately disappear into the wood, leaving a dark spot? First to sand and restore the old walnut floors to reintroduce the richness, colour, and warmth of walnut. Secondly to expertly match and provide new walnut boards for the bedrooms introducing the same richness and warmth throughout the entire property. We used matching walnut engineered boards of a very similar size with only a couple of mm difference. The product - Walnut Board Premier Unsealed Natural 20x180mm - is available directly from Fin Wood. We introduced a change of direction in the bedrooms to accommodate the mm difference in size. Beautifully restoring old walnut boards, Wimbledon SW20 The customers cleared the property of furniture which is especially helpful for effective sanding. A clear surface is essential for a good, scratch free finish. After we were professionally satisfied with the sanding we applied two coats of Osmo Polyx Oil, Satin. We created a dark walnut floor with irresistible warm chocolate tones. The old boards had disturbing yellow sap patches which stood out against the dark walnut and we set about to improve this. Restoring an existing walnut floor back to its original richness, Wimbledon SW20 This project took place in an attractive 1930s art deco block of flats in the penthouse apartment. The property featured an existing walnut wooden floor in the hallway and the expansive open plan kitchen living area. The objective of this project was to sand and restore the old walnut floors to reintroduce the richness, colour, and warmth of walnut.
